Chapter 10: FTP Sites

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is considered one of the forefathers of the Internet-it has been around for many years and has been a reliable standard protocol for transferring files between remote computers. UNIX workstations and mainframes used FTP sites exclusively until individual PC users gained access to the Net and used FTPs as a substitute to bulletin boards. Graphical, more user-friendly browsers were developed out of demand as the Internet grew in popularity. Archie and Gopher programs (popular file-finding server software) were replaced by the World Wide Web as a more successful method of simplifying and locating information over the Net. Although most surfers these days access FTP sites through a Web front door, many still prefer direct FTP connection for its simple, powerful, and fast file exchange. In other words, the Net has gone "mainstream" and is now a household word because of the birth of the World Wide Web. The Web's colorful, graphical, and easy to navigate system has revolutionized the online world. But the meat and potatoes of most Web sites lie in the area most people don't see -- the FTP server -- and here is where all the cool files are for you to download. I am going to show you how to tap into these vast (albeit bland) storage areas and extract great games and gaming accessories.

How We Look at FTP Sites

Many of us Internet users can access FTP sites with our current WWW browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. You may also choose to use FTP software such as the popular CuteFTP, Windows Sockets FTP (WS_FTP), or WinFTP (based on WS_FTP). These shareware FTP programs offer Windows-like environments to view and trade files on FTP sites. Although they may be faster and have a few more specific features, most of us will use our Web browser since it is easier to navigate through and we also don't have to switch programs while online. Figures 10.1 through 10.4 show how the look of the same FTP site (Maxis Software at ftp://ftp.maxis.com/) can differ depending on what software you are using.

What Can I Get on FTP Sites? What Can't I Get There?

There is an abundance of terrific gaming FTP pages that house many free computer game demos, shareware, and freeware. Other free files such as hints, tips, patches (bug fixes), add-on levels, FAQs, and cheat codes can also be accessed on various FTP sites. File Transfer Protocol pages sound like exactly what they are--an often huge list of software that can be downloaded or added to (you can also upload files from your computer to their server). Unlike the WWW, there are no online games, chat/discussion groups, or game reviews on FTP sites. Nor are there real-time head-to-head or multiplayer games. FTPs also do not contain graphics, music, animation, or video to experience while perusing through their pages. These FTP sites are only raw lists of files and these games must be transferred to your hard drive first in order to play them (once on your own system they can be either single or multiplayer games).

Before We Get Started

I would like to make two suggestions before we continue. First, it is handy to make a directory on your hard drive exclusively for downloaded files. I have one called temp (for "temporary") and I save all files I retrieve off the Net here first, before I decide where it should go. For example, if I download four files into my temp directory (see Figure 10.5), once offline I can look at the contents of that directory and move these files as follows: I would drag-and-drop the custom-built Duke Nukem 3D level LeRock.zip into my c:\games\duke3D directory, the doom.bmp wallpaper into my c:\windows directory, the quake.zip shareware game onto floppy disks for a friend, and expand the Shockwave plug-in driver (called n32z0006.exe) into my Netscape directory. As you can see, it is much easier for organizational purposes, to have a temp or hold directory.

A temporary directory in Windows Explorer

Second, the majority of files that you will be downloading from the Internet will be zipped, or compressed, for faster, simpler file transfer. In other words, a freeware computer game such as a Tetris clone may, in fact, be 12 files (executable, help, data, or icon files) totaling 830K. However, when compressed, tetris.zip is only one file with a size of only 510K. For this reason, you will need a utilities program on your computer to unzip these files back into their original larger sizes. The DOS standard is pkunzip/pkzip which is still widely used, but if Windows (3.1 or higher) is your current operating system I suggest you pick up WinZip(tm) (http://www.winzip.com/). (See Figure 10.6 for the WinZip(tm) home page.) WinZip(tm) is shareware itself and can handle ZIP, TAR, gzip, and Unix compress format files on its own but external programs are required for the less frequently used ARJ, ARC, and LZH formats.

Finally...

There are three main kinds of FTP gaming sites: commercial game companies, university servers, and large archive file centers (often independently run). Note there are thousands upon thousands of FTP sites located worldwide and many of them are mirrors of one another. Therefore, if one site is busy (too many users at that time), you can get the same games or game files from their mirrored site. Although commercial gaming companies have their product demos on their own FTP server they can most often be downloaded elsewhere as well. Also remember most of the game companies and mega-archive sites are using the World Wide Web now as a graphical front door to their FTP sites. In our case, we are cutting straight to the source and using raw FTPs directly, so don't look for colorful attractive pages to peruse through.

For our purposes, when logging onto an FTP site you will access the system as user anonymous. This should be automatic so don't even pay attention to it. If it says "Use Anonymous access denied," this just means the FTP connection has reached the maximum capacity at that time. Most gaming files will be located under the main parent directory under games or pub (or public) directory. File names may come with a very similar name above or below it but with a txt as a suffix (text document). Mouse-clicking on this will describe the contents of the game file so you can decide if you want to download it or not (see Figure 10.7). Other FTP sites may have an index or readme file to click on which will explain what the files on that particular page are. The game file you wish to download may also have a byte size count to let you know how big the file is, and a date when the file was first available or last modified. Simply click on the desired game file and you will be prompted by your browser to choose where on your hard drive you wish to save it (e.g. C:\temp). That's it! Don't be discouraged if you can't get into an FTP site right away--try again later, see if they give a mirrored site, or visit another archive that may have the same files you are looking for. Enjoy!
