I have since discovered I have committed a grave USENET error.
I failed to read the appropriate FAQ! The SCSI-HOWTO has the
following info in it and I quote:
        Drew Eckhardt wrote:
        4. The $70 price for the busmastering NCR53c810 boards is not
a typo, includes the standard ASPI/CAM driver package for
DOS, OS/2 and Windows (32 bit access), and other drivers are
        available for free download.

If you can't find one at that price, try Technoland at
1-800-292-4500 or 1-408-992-0888 if you live in California.

Sorry folks! Another person E-mailed me the following vendor
        name and 800 number: Superpower 1 (800) 736-0007

SW Technology also mailed me a response stating they also could
supply these boards. Their address is:
        Marvin Wu (swt@netcom.com)
        SW Technology
        251 West Renner Suite 229
        Richardson, TX 75080
        214-907-0871, fax 214-907-9339

I am not endorsing any of these companies just providing
information. Marvin Wu did bring up a point about this (along
with some other welcome info) is that I would need the NCR-SCSI
BIOS on my motherboard. I guess I need to look through my BIOS
setup options to see if this is mentioned anywhere but my guess
is that the motherboards Gateway used on their P4D-100
(486DX4-100 PCI system) doesn't have any options for this, so I
may be out of luck! :-( Anyone have any ideas about what I could do
if that turns out to be true?

Could somebody please point me to where I can find information on how to
use the dummy net driver in the linux kernel and just what it is or is not
useful for.

Or if you can just tell me what it is and how to use it that would be fine.

Thank you so much,

Help with either (or both) of 2 questions would be greatly
appreciated.

1) To change from using the thin connection on the 3Com 3C503 board,
to using the AUI (thick) connection, what do I have to do.

2) To use a different IP address, do I have to do anything
other than change the hosts and resolv.conf files.

Note - The machine was running on a different IP address
before and had been set up correctly for that. Due to a
recent office move, the IP address is now different and
the connection type must be changed.

Thanks very much for your help.

You have clearly got a problem of misunderstanding the term "line speed"
with your respondents. Some quote the speed of their async line to the
modem, others quote the bitrate on the phone line.

At Netcom a few minutes ago, 30+ new linux.* groups (NOT comp.os.linux

to be moderated groups? Who set up these new groups, and who's moderating them?
It sounds like a good idea, but it might flood the net with even more
groups... and I doubt even linux can justify 30-40 newsgroups...
(Although I must admit the comp.os.linux.* groups ARE pretty busy!)

Hi all,
I finally got hold of a CL5428 VLB Cirrus Logic card. It is probably a
cheap Taiwanese card (no documentation). I add RAM to make it 2M normal
DRAM.
The speed is not too bad, probably 60% the speed of S3. But the crsip
text is obvious. It is still the best looking chipset I ever seen. At
1152x900 56Hz vert. refresh. It is crisp like other cards running at
800x600. The contrast between Black and White is simply excellent.
However it can only do up to 80Mhz dot clock scan. Tis is trouble some
because 1280x1024 will be interlaced. Even at 1152x900 it flickers a
little. The snow problem when too much activities happen on the screen
still exists, but it is minimal comparing to cheap 16-bit ISA CL 5424
cards.
Does any one know of a card base don CL5428 or CL5434 that scans up to
130Mhz dot clock? Let me know please so I can buy one.

Please do not post questions to comp.os.linux.misc - read on for details of
which groups you should read and post to.

Please do not crosspost anything between different groups of the comp.os.linux
hierarchy. See Matt Welsh's introduction to the hierarchy, posted weekly.

If you have a question about Linux you should get and read the Linux Frequently
Asked Questions with Answers list from sunsite.unc.edu, in /pub/Linux/docs, or
from another Linux FTP site. It is also posted periodically to c.o.l.announce.

In particular, read the question `You still haven't answered my question!'
The FAQ will refer you to the Linux HOWTOs (more detailed descriptions of
particular topics) found in the HOWTO directory in the same place.

Then you should consider posting to comp.os.linux.help - not
comp.os.linux.misc.

Note that X Windows related questions should go to comp.windows.x.i386unix, and
that non-Linux-specific Unix questions should go to comp.unix.questions.
Please read the FAQs for these groups before posting - look on rtfm.mit.edu in
/pub/usenet/news.answers/Intel-Unix-X-faq and .../unix-faq.

Only if you have a posting that is not more appropriate for one of the other
Linux groups - ie it is not a question, not about the future development of
Linux, not an announcement or bug report and not about system administration -
should you post to comp.os.linux.misc.

No, the AIC-7770 is the _controller chip_ on the 274x and 284x cards.

Here's the Projects-FAQ entry:

Title: aic7770 SCSI driver
Desc1: driver for all scsi controllers using the aic7770 chip,
Desc2: such as Adaptec's AHA-274x and AHA-284x models,
Desc3: as well as some motherboards.
Desc4:
Desc5:
Author: aic7770: Scott M. Ferris, aha274x: John Aycock
AuthorEmail: sferris@winternet.com, aycock@cpsc.ucalgary.ca
InfoSources1: Announcements will be made in comp.os.linux.announce
InfoSources2: (ed's note: a copy of the Aug 04 status report is on
InfoSources3: ftp.ix.de:/pub/Linux/FAQ )
Assistance: accepted, as are hardware donations (2840AT, 2742AT)
CurrentStat: aic7770: working on microcode, 274x: pre-alpha
ETA:
Remarks1: John Aycock (aycock@cpsc.ucalgary.ca) has a seperately
Remarks2: developed aha-274x driver in pre-alpha. It is available
Remarks3: via FTP at: ftp.cpsc.ucalgary.ca /pub/systems/linux/aha274x
Remarks4: His 274x driver may be merged into the generic aic7770.
Remarks5: Which way development will proceed has not yet been decided.

BTW most if not all of the popular stuff under development or in the
planning stage has an entry in this FAQ. Before asking the same questions
over and over again, please consult the Projects-FAQ. That's what it's for.
It is available via FTP from the standard FAQ locations, such as
sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/docs/ . The latest and greatest version is
kept on ftp.ix.de:/pub/Linux/FAQ.
