Where I'm at, the prefix to disable call waiting for a
single call is *70, but perhaps for you it's #70 ??

Also in this area (and I suspect elsehwere) the switching
office also accepts "1170" to disable call-waiting,
since it's possible you might have a pulse-dail phone.
The various prefixes, such as blocking caller ID, also
can use a '11' instead of the '*', at least here in
Corvallis Oregon, USA. Unless you're in a location
even more remote (but still USA), I'd guess "1170" has
a pretty good chance of working.

You could always try calling you local phone company and
ask for help turning off call waiting with your old
rotary style phone. (which doesn't have '*' or '#')

If you don't intend to use the CD-ROM for any other purposes, feeding
40 floppies into the machine is somewhat faster than buying a CD-ROM
drive, installing it and installing the software from CD.

The original thread has expired here, so I'm not sure I have the right
newsgroup.

Whoever was talking about the BEST Fortress's computer interface not having an
NDA should make sure which interface they mean. I finally got the information
from Deltec about their UPS interface; it appears that you can run it in dumb
mode for which information is freely available, or in smart mode which
requires an NDA to get the information. In dumb mode, you can receive a
signal when power fails and send a signal to turn off the UPS after system
shutdown, or use it to switch external devices on loss of AC and/or low
battery (this is non-RS-232; a common is tied to the appropriate pins on the
connector when the associated condition exists). I can mail or post the whole
thing if anyone wants it... but I'd prefer to find that the BEST Fortress or
some other UPS actually has details on its smart mode available without an
NDA.

(And yes, I tried to get the folks at Deltec to consider opening up. Sigh.
A visiting client --- I was at the office --- asked me why they would *want*
an NDA for the information, which I have to agree is a pretty good question.)

Hello everyone,
I'm running a notebook with a QuickTape 250 tape drive. I was wondering
if this QIC-80 drive would work with Linux? When I start the backup
program (which appears to be propreitary) I think it loads some sorta
driver for the drive. I'm guessing that unless I write a driver for it,
this isn't going to work. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone, (again)
I also have a SyQuest 3270S (270MB SCSI removable HD) connected to a
SB-16 SCSI-2 card. I'm deciding wether to buy a 2nd harddrive for my
notebook (it's an IDE removeable) for Linux or installing Linux on a SyQuest
cartridge. If Linux is located on the SyQuest can I backup to another
cartridge? I only have one drive so I would need a Linux version of
DOS's diskcopy (only it would use my 12MB as a buffer and would work on
the file level instead of the sector level). Is there such a thing? Or
am I better off geting a 2nd HD for my computer and then backing up to
the SyQuest that way? Any and all suggestions always welcome.

There is one which is strictly a disassembler. It is part of the
objdump program which is in the bintools package. You will need
at least version 2.2 of bintools from prep.ai.mit.edu. (Currently
they have version 2.4.)

There may be some patches needed for the linker, ld. I would not
replace the linker, however the objdump program will work very
well as a disassembler in the linux object file.

When CD drives came out for music, they were $600+ and the CDs were

as low as $4.

If I am going to get a CD-ROM drive, it will be SCSI, which will cost
me $300+ for triple speed. I'll buy one 2 years from now when they
are $80.

Right now, there is nothing that I want to buy on CD-ROM that runs on
either Coherent or NetBSD.

There are *two* (at least...) hidden in gdb. There is the "disassemble"
command, and there is the "x" command. "x/i" disassembles. One might
expect that "disassemble" is all you would need, but it seems to be too
smart for its own good, and balks at disassembling stuff that it doesn't
think is code. "x/i" doesn't seem to have any such restrictions.
