I am looking for an 8 to 16 port terminal server to use with a
modem pool. I need to be able to support SLIP and PPP connections.
I am wondering if anyone can suggest a suitable product. I am
presently thinking of something like the Xylogics ANNEX.

Incidentally, if anyone has a used ANNEX (with modem control on all
ports), that they can offer at a good price, I am ready to spend
money.

Umm, if you find one, tell me. I am almost 99% sure that no vendors
specialize in Linux. The best you may get is a technician that has ran
Linux.

I'm hoping your not looking for one ultimate solution as I think you will have a problem in that case. There are many FAQS, HOWTOS and even some docs on the subjects you mention. You can find them on sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/docs. But again, thay will not contain the ultimate explanation and/or solution. However, they will make life easier :-)

Has anyone else had problems with the sound under the recent kernels? I
have a PAS16 that worked fine up unitl around 1.1.35 or so, and then until
1.1.40 it would play a sound and then pause for a few seconds. Modplayers
wouldn't work at all. 1.1.42 fixed the problem!. Now with 1.1.43 trying to
play a sound brings down the whole system.

Is it just me?

Subject: Linux PPP problem (Please, be nice)
Date: 11 Aug 1994 15:21:15 -0700

Hello...
I recently recompiled my kernel to use PPP...it seems to work fine,
I can initialize a connect with chat and pppd, and get my modem to
scream at me, and even get as far as the command prompt where I
invoke ppp, and I get connected, and all that (running MorningStar
PPP from my workspace). However, I am not able to establish a link.
The problem is contained in the below script, logged by syslog:

pppd[947]: pppd 2.1.2 started by root, uid 0
pppd[947]: Connecting with <chat -v "" ATDT2861600 CONNECT "" ogin: [login] word: [passwd]>

So it seems that the problem is some type of pid file creation...i have
the /etc/ppp directory set up and everything...it is, to say the least,
frustrating.
Any help would be appreciated...trust me, I know it's a pain to get
involved with helping someone, but if you don't, I'll make a little
voodoo doll of you and stick 72-PINS in it.

Thanks,

Can anyone tell me if there a porting for the DEC Alpha
is taking place and if so how far it has come, since I can't
seem to find anything in the FAQs.

Thanks in advance.

It works fine for me.
In the past I thought it was broken, but it was an error in the
termios setting I used. Don't set CRTSCTS when you want XON/XOFF,
and use TCSETS, not TCSETA.

I understand it is broken in BETA versions of the kernel. If
you want to use beta versions, (the v1.1 series), then get the latest
v1.1.42 (at the moment!) which fixes the problem (at least for me)

: I know RTS/CTS is assumed to be better. But for "efax",
: and I hear some printers, XON/XOFF is required.

Yes, XON/XOFF is absolutely required for fax.

BTW, 1.1.42 (for me) excercises a limitation in efax. My modem
has large buffer sizes, and I suspect more data is being buffered
in the serial driver than previously. The author of efax is on holidays, so
I am taking the liberty of posting a small diff here, in case others
face a smilar problem. It is more noticable when connecting to fax devices
operating at low speeds (2400 and 4800 bps devices).

The author has assumed a maximum fixed time for the flushing of output data.
My patches are to simply calculate what that time should be more accurately.
The symptoms this fixes are an error in your log like this:

efax: added RTC (9 bytes) (31:34)
efax: Error: modem command (none) timed out (31:48)
        efax: sent 2163 lines 38786+1059 bytes 63 s 5059 bps

NOTE: this does not fix the XON/XOFF bug! Upgrade to the latest kernel
or stick with 1.0 to fix this.

Despite this fix, I would like to say what a great little program efax is.

Regards,
Jamie

Please do not post questions to comp.os.linux.misc - read on for details of
which groups you should read and post to.

Please do not crosspost anything between different groups of the comp.os.linux
hierarchy. See Matt Welsh's introduction to the hierarchy, posted weekly.

If you have a question about Linux you should get and read the Linux Frequently
Asked Questions with Answers list from sunsite.unc.edu, in /pub/Linux/docs, or
from another Linux FTP site. It is also posted periodically to c.o.l.announce.

In particular, read the question `You still haven't answered my question!'
The FAQ will refer you to the Linux HOWTOs (more detailed descriptions of
particular topics) found in the HOWTO directory in the same place.

Then you should consider posting to comp.os.linux.help - not
comp.os.linux.misc.

Note that X Windows related questions should go to comp.windows.x.i386unix, and
that non-Linux-specific Unix questions should go to comp.unix.questions.
Please read the FAQs for these groups before posting - look on rtfm.mit.edu in
/pub/usenet/news.answers/Intel-Unix-X-faq and .../unix-faq.

Only if you have a posting that is not more appropriate for one of the other
Linux groups - ie it is not a question, not about the future development of
Linux, not an announcement or bug report and not about system administration -
should you post to comp.os.linux.misc.

Sergei Naoumov (naoumov@PHYSICS.UNC.EDU) a ecrit:

: So, my question is the following: is there any way to catch up this
: event from a modem, analyze it somehow and tell that someone is
: actually calling. Then I would put my modem session "on hold", talk
: to a person and go back. The idea is a little bit crazy and I feel
: there should be some difficulties about a hardware but in principle...
: What do you think?

: Sergei

Here, in France, we have a funny device called Minitel. It's a kind on
terminal, which include a V23 (1200/75) modem. And it works very well with
call waiting. When you get a second call, you see on line 0 "appel"
("call"). The transmission with the server is stopped during tue call
waiting beep, but the modem does not hang up. The communication can continue
at the end of the beep.

So I think the same thing is possible on a 'normal' modem, if, of course,
some makers want to add this feature.

Which is way too much. Or can I restrict it to comp.os.linux.* ?

nn does search in the active newsgroup via "=".

Sorry, DPMI is still very alpha....... There are only some small programms
running under dosemu using DPMI like PKZIP. Some text based programms using the
RSX dosextender (emx and djgpp compiled programms) like emtex386 are running
too.
But again, DPMI is very alpha...... In the last few weeks I couldn't spend much
time for dosemu and I don't know if it will change in future. If someone will
contribute or help me with DPMI - please contact me :-)........

greetings,
Lutz.

I prefer nethack, a way better implementation. I had it running in
verion 3.1 on linux 0.98 about one year ago.
