    Greetings, all;

I just got a new Gateway 486-66 at work, and it came equipped with a
NEC CDR-260 CDROM, which is supposed to appear as a second IDE HD under
DOS (it does, but with MSCDEX loaded and a NEC device driver).

I was wondering if anybody had got one of these beasts to work under
Linux? Does v1.1.35 of the kernel check for a second IDE host adapter?
Can it be made to? Has anybody tried this with a similar device?

Thanks for any answers or comments in advance,
Erik Green

Have you got it to work already ? Here it just says something like
"can't accept on server socket" when someone executes ttysnoops file.
The /etc/snooptab is supposed to be OK.

how prectical is it to get some kind of stat chart on term ver, modem, line

When xfig starts it reads a configuration file named Fig in
/usr/X11/lib/X11/app-defaults (?!). In slackware 2.0.0 this is a link to
Fig-color. But in this file is an error causing a recusion during initialisation.
Change this link to the file Fig-standard or get the new version of Fig-color
and everything works fine.

Let's see...

zblaxell@miranda:~/News[1001]$ wc `find . -name KILL -print | grep linux`
      9 27 183 ./comp/os/linux/announce/KILL

My favorite trn commands are 'T' and 'A'. 'T.' when someone asks a
question I'm interested in, 'T,' for assorted flame threads.

When in trn's thread selector, I look for articles with interesting
subjects ("interesting" defined by the amount of time and patience I
have). Everything else (about 9 articles out of 10) get nuked. Most of
these are postings of the form "I can't compile X with current_version(Y)-Z
of Y," where Z is larger than about 10 (e.g. people still using 0.99.14
of the kernel, etc). I also have a collection of killfile entries of
the form "Help! I can't write a useful subject line!" :-)

Most of the bulk of those KILL files is thread selections. There are
subject and from line sections too (/torvalds@/:+, for instance, to grab
everything The Big Guy writes, of course. Also several people from the
linux-activists mailing list). I also grab "uwaterloo.ca" to see if
anyone 'round here likes Linux as much as I do.

In the spirit of Kill files I have some subjects I filter out.
Currently this includes strings like "1.1.35", "cd-rom", "user.*s
group", and a selection of the HOWTO and FAQ postings (I read them
once, then use WWW if I ever want to see them again).

trn almost reads news for me now. About 70% of the news in col.* is
sorted out before I start reading.

Ask and ye shall receive. LINT FOR LINUX:

#!/bin/sh
echo 'There is no lint for Linux. Your file can not be checked.'
exit 0

Don't forget to secure the file with the mode 755.

An alternative is to use either gcc with the various options to check
the data or to use the lclint package from larch.lcs.mit.edu:/pub/evs/*.
The binaries are in the file linux-port.tar.Z.

(I still like my version of lint better. :) )

While I greatly admire the work you people are putting into Linux and wish
you great success, I too think it's still basically a hacker/academic/home
unix, not a commercial product like Unixware ans Solarix X86 et al. For
VARs to put it into a commercial site running (say) Informix makes no sense.
The user is paying for a database licence, the application licence and any
other commercial software. The cost of the OS is small change. For the sake of
saving that, the VAR opens himself up to a lot of potential problems, not
least if there is a bug in the database code. The DB vendor will rightly tell
hime that it is not supported or guaranteed to work on Linux. If the DB vendor
upgrades the system and it then no longer runs on Linux, the VAR wears the
screams.

As for the comment about event horizons, get real. Just *try* telling a
potential client that there's some software that will do what they want but
all they have to do is wait a year, well maybe 18 months well....

That's one sale you'll *never* get. Enough of those and you're not in business.
Clients want solutions NOW, not next year. Look at the flak Novell gets about
bugs in Unixware.

If I can supply it now and know it works, it's a product. Otherwise, it's
vapourware. At the moment, WINE's vapourware.

I've used Unixware running Windows and find it unsatisfactory. Ditto for
Solaris X86 with WABI. I hope WINE does work well so I can ditch Windows off
my other machine and install Linux. Your making ignorant comments to people
who make their living trying to supply the best solutions now won't help
your cause.

You should really not use term 1.1.4 in combination with term 2.0.4
as these are highly incompatible. Alas for i think your problem is
the fact that you got termtelnet in binary form from one of the
ftp-sites. Most probably it then is compiled for use w ith term
1.1.4, which means that chance is high that it will not work on a
term2.0.4 - term 2.0.4 connection. I'm surprised to hear that it
   works on a term1.1.4 - term 2.0.4 connection.

No, termtelnet is *alot* older than term114. And it works fine with
term204. Also, term204 was working ok with term114. With help frmo
Chris Metcalf, it was discovered that (for now) DGUX requires
USE_CONNBLOCK. Now I have term204 working on both ends, & termtelnet
& termftp work with them too. Chris also had suggested patches to
aleviate the need for USE_CONNBLOCK, but I haven't tried them yet.

Very odd. I click on the 'Help' word and all I get are documents
that provide useful information only once in ten tries. They
seem to assume that everyone clikcing on help is a dunderhead.
Worse, you have to follow this crazy hypertext type thing.
And just when the doc is about to get useful, it ends. It's
as if it's saying "technical information removed for your
protection." Then if you want to find out about a program
and select "About Foo For Windows", you end up with a copyright
page...

Very few UNIX man pages pull punches when it comes to information.

Actually, I think what's going on is that Windows assumes
everyone is sort of used to Windows already, and is very
familiar to MSdos. And that everyone has a manual or two
nearby (many UNIX systems have nice beginner's manuals,
so try to hunt them down if online stuff that's meant for
reference isn't helping).

When using mpage 2.12 to print text via Postscript to my LaserJet 4MP, everything works great except it seems to always cut off the first 3-5 lines of the text file. I've looked at the postscript translation and know enough to see that they are in there but I'm not sure that mpage has somehow formated them wrong.

Has anyone else had this problem?
