I've ftp'ed the XView file off of sunsite.unc.edu. I also
grabbed wxWin package also. I'm trying to compile one of the
sample files [hello program]. I'm getting these errors and I don't
know how to proceed. How do I fix these errors?

No, Linux isn't ported to the Sparc. But why would you? Solaris (V1.1B) is
much more stable, and Linux is trying to copy alot of it. By owning
the hardware, you own a license to use Solaris. Any additional charges
you may incure for it are distribution fees for the media, and nothing
else. If you already have Solaris around, you don't need to buy it
again.
This is the licensing deal up until very lately, I haven't heard of them
changing it..

So? Calling internal routines doesn't make something a derivative work.

For that matter, being linked into the kernel (either statically or
dynamically) doesn't make the module a derivative work of the kernel.
The result (kernel+module) is a derivative work of both the module
and the kernel, and so cannot be distributed without complying with
the licenses that cover both the module and the kernel, but either
can be distributed alone as long as it meets the licensing terms
imposed by its copyright holder.

There's a widespread misconception that one could not distribute a
non-GPL'ed driver to be linked into GPL'ed code, but no one has been
able to offer a coherent legal argument for that belief.

Hello gentle folk

I have just recovered what seems to me to be a
SCSI (I) card from an old 8086 machine. It has
the following marking:

Everex Systems Inc EV-831 Rev F

and the EEPROM is D.05C (revision I suppose).

There are two other large chips:

  NEC 8524PX / D8257C-2
and
  Toshiba TMP8085AP-2 (Hmmm an 8085?)

The only other sizeable non-glue part has an Everex FCC
compliance label on it. OK, I just removed this 8-)

It's a TI CF60128N

Does anyone:

a.) have any info on this board?
b.) know how to configure the jumpers and switches
  c.) know whether there's a Linux compatible
      driver.

I have read the FAQ and HOWTOs to no avail . . .

Kind regards

Derek Jones

Correct.. but in the UK at least linking with something to create one
application leaves you with an application that is a derivative work. It does
however not affect the status of the code before you linked it. There mere
act of linking it makes a derivative work and may be a violation of one
or other license. The module loader is just a linker

Hi,

This could be a very simple question, but it is bugging me.....

Why is it, that when I run an xterm, the backspace key works in the shell
(tcsh), but *not* in vi (started from that shell in the same xterm)??

Similar problem in ez (Andrew texteditor), the backspace key acts as a
DEL-key..... also very annoying.

So, as it doesn't appear to be a 'stty' question, how do I solve it?

/usr/X11/bin/XF86_<server> the disk space that is actually used would be off of

Is anyone using it with *Linux* successfully? I did not find this model

Does it have any restrictions (eg max disk capacity) ?
I was told it is SCSI-2; is it true?.
BTW, what is the price for it (say in the US)?

The same people offer me a Compaq tape streamer 320/525Mb (QIC, SCSI).
Any opinions about this?

Please reply via personal email.

Hi,

I'm a new Linux User and i am preparing my system to have Linux on it.
However, i am looking for advice and some detailed instructions on how to go
about implementiong the advice ... :)

The situation is as follows.....

I have two IDE hard drives, 540MB 8ms WD Caviar and a 170MB 12ms WD Caviar on a
Gateway 486DX33 with a Combo drive (5.25 and 3.5)

I wantg to keep all my DOS stuff on the faster drive the 540 one and put all my
Linux stuff on the 170MB one... I know how to install Linux and stuff, but my
question is, which drive should i designate as Master drive and which as slave?
And how should i do LILO, as MBR I assume? but what if i boot dos first and use
a dos based loader like bootlin (does it work?) to boot it up? I should add
that i use DOS more than Linux... (until WP 6.0 is ported.. the windows 6.0a is
SUPERB!!!!) Down with Messy Wurd!!!

Any ideas? and i would like not to have two os systems on one disk.

That's the same situtation over here. Thus, I can sell you some code for
you to link into your kernel. When you do so, you've made a derivative
work of both the kernel and my code, and you have to obey all the licenses.
If my code is not GPL'ed, you'll only be able to obey all the licenses by
never distributing your linked kernel. As long as you keep it to yourself,
however, you've not violated GPL, and all will be well.

The place it gets interesting over here is if you do distribute that kernel.
You can then of course be nailed for a GPL violation. Can I be nailed for
"contributory infringement"? My guess is that I cannot, since there was a
way for you to use my code without violating GPL (just use it on your own
system without distributing the kernel). A big factor in contributory
infringement in copyright over here is whether there were non-infringing
uses of the thing that is accused of contributory infringement.

--Tim Smith

ps: most of the U.S. copyright statute can currently be ftp'ed from
ftp.u.washington.edu. It's in the public/tzs/copyright directory
(one file per section). There's a compressed tar archive in public/tzs
of the whole thing, too. It's out of date by a couple of years, but
many might still find it useful.

pps: "contributory infringement" over here is not a matter of statute.
It's a judicial creation, and so is not in the copyright statute.
