Subject: 2058 NOVELL WORKING ON LOW-COST SWITCHING DEVICE BASED ON LINUX

NOVELL WORKING ON LOW-COST SWITCHING DEVICE BASED ON LINUX
(June 10th 1994) Linus Torvalds, developer of the Linux freeware Unix
System V.4 clone, has confirmed that Novell Inc is working on a
project based on his operating system, which is code-named Corsair.
Novell is said to be developing a 32-bit operating system based on
Linux, which interfaces with DR DOS - called Novell DOS 7 in its
latest incarnation - and UnixWare, which includes a Windows emulator
and bridges to Mosaic. The company declined to elaborate on Corsair,
saying that it was simply experimental technology in the labs, and
that it had not yet decided whether to make it into a product or not.

Torvalds also says that Novell is developing a new windows manager
for Corsair called Looking Glass: "I haven't seen it, but from what I
know it's great, better than the Common Desktop Environment. It seems
a solid product, and they will probably do some documentation. I
don't think they will in any way try to compromise the copyright of
the kernel itself because they'd be killed by the bad publicity."

You're problem is that DOS4GW intertcepts ROM BIOS (int 10h) calls
and translates pointers, etcv for you. However, it doesn't emulate
VESA BIOS calls. So, what you need to do is call the DPMI function
that is documented in your C/C++ 386 Users Guide and call the
"Simulate Real Mode Interrupt" function. There is some sample code
in the sample code that comes with Watcom, its in the
WATCOM/SRC/GOODIES directry that demonstrates this, if I remember
  correctly.

Subject: LU0 Linux Gateway
Date: 13 Jun 1994 11:03:02 -0400

I have a few questions regarding LU0. Myself and a friend are
attempting to build
a LU0 gateway for linux.
LU0 provides a low level API for SNA applications. A LU0 application
can be
written to do the one of the following; LU6.2 gateway, SNA3270, 4700
gateway
or interface with a specific application.

The linux LU0 gateway musl manage path control, Data link, and client
LU0
application. A sekleton NAU (TC,DFC,etc) must be implemented in the
gateway.
It is up to the client program to implement TC, DFC, and NAU, as
needed.
The client needs to understand brackets, chainging, bidding, rsp+,
rsp-, etc. The
client LU0 application will assemble RH & RU data. It is not
responsible for the TH building.

Am I on the right track here ? Suggestions welcomed.

I've done a bit of observing this phenomena. Her's what I found:

7-Eleven uses an embedded SCO SVR4 application.
Wells Fargo Bank uses Tektronix terminals with Motif and a color text-based application.
AMC movie theaters use an MS-Windows application.
Merril-Lynch uses DESQview/X and Motif, to display Motif clients running off SunOS
and HP/UX.

I find it pretty fascinating...

Hi,
I've been trying to do things like mount floppies (msdos and linux)
using mount /dev/fd0 /floppy....BUT.....

I get an error saying that directory /floppy does not exist - even when I have
just created it!!

Does anyone else have this problem or is there a fix. I got linux last
Monday from src.doc.ic.ac.uk (slackware mirror) - it's quite uptodate.

Any thoughts?

I've been trying many different programs, like metalbase, ingres, etc.
None are easy to use in a "Alpha 4" sense. (I hate alpha 4, but it is *easy*)

Perhaps a team of programmers could work on this, I know I'd be willing

Hi folks,
I am using LINUX slackware version 1.xx. My problem is with the graphics card set up.
I have the TVGA9000i card. The trouble is, that using the 800x600 SVGA setup
referenced in the configs "trident.xconfig", the screen starts with a lot of noise coming from
the high-voltage section. I fell in dought, how long my screen will survive this big
electrical overstress in its deflection unit.
The second is, I just tried to create a setup up for the 1024x768i with 16 colors,
the maximum for this TVGA9000i card. I was not successful.
Is anybody on line, who has experience with this card and can give me
the XCONFIG sections (please put them just as a file in your answer, my
LINUX is not connected to the mailbox).

Lot of thanks in advance

Gernot,
I've had the same problem. I recently upgraded from XFree86-1.3 to
XFree86-2.1.1, grabbed the xdm-shadow package (yes, I run the shadow
suite on my 486/33 at home), and while everything else seems to work under
the new XFree, xdm is the one thing that won't. It will not recognize
any logins at all. (I run the shadow-3.3.1 package, by the way).
Hope someone has a solution.

Brian,

I was having a similar problem. You have to change the jumper settings on
the UltraStor to change the I/O mapping address from 330h to 340h, which
will allow the UltraStor to recognize your drives. I tried this, and it
worked, with one problem... after recognizing the drives, I get the
message:

US14F: reset: called,

and the floppy spins, while the machine hangs.

If you are able to get past the above complication, I would appreciate it
if you would contact me.

Thanks,

Patrick - shags@bnr.ca

Actually, I much prefer the terminal server approach. The modem bank

Much LESS wiring is required, and what wiring there is is more localized.
