  Hi,

This isn't a 1 to 1 solution to your problem, but I'm facing about
the same situation i.e. 'how can I quickly get a few programmers
that don't have any experience with X or Motif, to build a GUI
  quick enough?"

In my quest for a solution, I stumbled upon SUIT, the
Simple User Interface Toolkit. I downloaded the MS Windows
demo and tried it, since there was no demo available for
Linux. And yes, it worked nice in windows (except for 3
  protection errors :-)

So I thought, what the heck, let's download the source and
see how many days it'll take me to port it to Linux.
Changed a few def's (easy) and a Makefile (1 line), compiled
the demo and WOW, it worked (after about 40 minutes).
(Please, I'm not gone give support for this since it is so
easy. Start from the sun3 definitions and #ifdef out a few
printf declarations that aren't defined in the sun3 headers.)

The README said that the aim was to have students developing GUI's
after 2 hours. It took me 20 minutes to get the full feeling of
the tool. You can change the appearence when running the application
itself, when you're satisfied, you change 1 line of code and the
GUI is hardcoded in the application.

BTW, works for DOS Windows and X. I used it with Motif (Metrolink)
with no problems (and with the Motif look and feel).

If this SUIT system works out as it's going now, they'll have
my (financial) support with a smile :-) (Commercial use requires
a license) That's what free software is about...

I'm using Yggrasil LGX kenerl 0.99p13 version Linux. From its
document said that AHA-2742 SCSI controller card is not support yet.
However, I know that this card will be supported in the very near future.
I want to know is this driver available now? Or, where can I find most
update information of this driver developing progess?

Thank you!

Well... I only had a 40 MB hard disk with the following on it:

 - 8 MB swap
 - Basic Linux incl. man pages
 - Full GNU Emacs executable, libraries and info files
 - GCC
 - either
    - Linux kernel source plus space to build the kernel, or
    - X Windows plus basic clients.

This required some compressing of Emacs documentation in its etc dir.

Too bad I have a 2 MB quota. The great thing about Linux (e.g. Slackware) is
that that it is packaged in floppy-sized lumps.

My ThinkPad 350C laptop has only 122M of hard drive space and I've almost
exhausted it. I would like to add more space and found that a couple of
companies make PCMCIA type III harddrives. Would I be able to use one of
these under linux? Does anybody else out there use these drives
successfully?

Is it just easier and less expensive to completely replace my exhisting
hard drive? Is this operation to perform in ThinkPad laptop or do I have
to have a professional service center do it? Does anybody know what
brand/model hard drives are in the 350C laptops and what I can replace them
with?

sorry there are a lot of questions but I would really appreciate your
answers.

Thanks,

Subject: Specify components for gateway P5-90
Date: 7 Jun 94 20:19:31 GMT

Hi,
I am looking into buying the Gateway 2000 P5-90, and need some
advice on specifying certain components to maintain linux compatibility.
No, the linux hardware faq was of no use, as it has not been updated since
something like nov. 93. I'd obviously like to order a system that works
easily (no major modifications to standard slackware distribution)!

Video:
PCI ATI Ultra Pro (mach 32) w/2MB. (do not get MACH 64 card!).
Furthermore, specify VRAM instead of DRAM, as DRAM does not work well at
high X11 resolutions.

1. Can X11 Mach 32 server use all 2 MB (or have plans to do so)?

Soundcard:
        Mediavision ProAudio 16-bit.

2. Is Aztech 16-bit sound card linux compatible?

CD-Rom:
gateway rumored to ship either sony, mitsumi, phillips, or nec
models (all non-scsi). Do not know exact models.
I have heard that either the mitsumi fx001D or the sony cdu-31a
models will work.

3. Does anyone know exact models, and/or which ones definitely will
work with linux?

4. Or have any recommendations based on performance?

Ethernet:

5. I have an SMC Ethercard Plus Elite 16 Combo (BNC-connector). Is
this supported?

6. Is Intel 16-bit with BNC connector supported?

Harddrive:
Western Digital 540 MB (Caviar Drive)
Will work with slight modifications detailed elsewhere.

Finally, any other recommendations on maintaining linux compatibility would
be welcome!

thanks in advance,
Brad L. Miller bmiller@uiuc.edu

NFS is available for Linux. It does not require a Sun license.

AFS would require a license from Transarc, and a substantial porting effort.
Rumor has it that folks at MIT (which has a source license) are doing a
Linux port (maybe just the client side) for their internal use. If this is
true then it is possible (this is completely theorizing) that Transarc will
authorize a binary distribution, as they did for the Apollo port.

Discussing the relative technical merits of NFS and AFS will result in a
flame war that I refuse to start.

Um, like the manual (or one of the manuals) says, you will see
a lot of harmless broken pipe errors when you interrupt a pager
program that is not done. Other broken pipes could be more serious,
indicating that one of the programs in a pipeline has stopped
before it should have.
Segmentation faults are usually code problems, misplaced pointers
and such... if you downloaded a binary, try compiling. If you
compiled yourself, check the Makefile options. Try linking
statically if you were linked dynamically, and turn off compiler
optimization.

The standard login name to use for anonymous ftp is 'anonymous'; I

If you disregard the nonfact that he's a Latin-mongreling Transsylvanian,
yes. :-)

Whether that makes him an ancestor of the Vikings, I do not know. The early
history of the settlement of what is now known as Finland is unclear (to me,
at least), but I think at least some of the Swedes came here before the
Vikings took an interest in the outside world.

Hm..., I wonder if this is relevant to Linux? What the heck.

Angry thought of the day: I _hate_ doing circles in LaTeX using xfig and
fig2dev. Why the heck can't it approximate a circle using very small
line segments? Anything would be better than squares. Yuck. (And this
is as relevant to Linux as the letters G, A, and S.)

Second, the Xwindows environment is so confusing in its layout--not
