There's two mentions of Linux in July's Personal Computing World (the
UK edition) - one mentions Novell's alleged proposed use of it, the
other is general information about it, promising more details in the
next month's issue.

Easiest thing for you to do is grab the README_ChangeLog and see
for yourself all the great changes.

BTW: When will an update Slackware be released?

I'm not sure who maintains the list of this stuff, but I used the
timing chart I have to develop a video mode which works beautifully
on my 5FG.

# NEC 5FG 1024x768 @ 70Hz
# name clock horizontal timing vertical timing flags
"1024x768"      75      1024 1048 1184 1328      768  771  777  806

I also used the timing chart to come up with this one before I realized
that my video card cannot handle 80Mhz. If you card does, it should
work nicely, but I haven't really tested it.

# NEC 5FG 1024x768 @ 76Hz
# name clock horizontal timing vertical timing flags
"1024x768"      80      1024 1192 1288 1312      768  800  802  802

I have the whole timing chart for the 5FG if any one is interested, I
can look up the number for other modes.

Subject: [slackware] what happened to dvilj2p?
Date: 7 Jun 1994 05:25:34 -0700

 I agree with this writer that dvilj2p is a fine tool for printing
.dvi files on PCL4.5 printers; although my original Slackware 1.1.1
distribution has become somewhat "hybridized", I still have dvilj2p and I
would not dream of parting with it!

 I am thankful I happened across the following post (in comp.text.tex)
because I had not noticed 'dvilj2p' was not listed in my copy of the
Slackware 1.2.0 manifest.

 Please. Slackware, don't throw away this fine printing tool!

I am replacing the old Milieu/SLS Metafont/TeX/LaTeX
(unknown release)
with LaTeX2e as part of an upgrade to Slackware 1.2.0
The old package came with "dvilj2p" (unknown release) and
the new package seems to have nothing like it.
When run on Slackware as installed, the old dvilj2p invokes
Metafont a few times and then prints (the right number of)
blank sheets.
(Perhaps the New Font Selection Scheme has left it behind.
Or maybe 1.2.0 is broken.)

I looked on "CTAN" (SHSU.edu) but the only thing in
tex-archive/dviware/laserjet is
-rw-rw-r--   1 14001    mirror     99432 Oct  2  1990 dviplus.web
and an unsigned readme file, same date.
The readme says it will need a lot of work, and I don't know
what to do with a "web" file.
I also tried likely archie patterns with no luck. It seems the
best sites don't advertise on archie.

Has anyone got the Slackware 1.2.0 TeX to print dvi files on an
HP Laserjet family printer?
What did you change?
What utility do you use to drive the printer?
("Give it up and use dvips -> Ghostscript" would be cumbersome,
but I could live with it if it works well.)
Where (and how) did you find it?
Do you get 600 dpi on your HP LJ4?

TIA, will summarize if I find anything useful.

Cameron, the perpetual newbie

Subject: Broadcast address on raw sockets return EACCES
Date: 7 Jun 1994 08:26:23 GMT

When I try to ping from my linux box a broadcast address (193.42.2.255) to
see what hosts will reply I get the error sendto: permission denied. I looked
at the network code (kernel 1.1.0) and found only 3 places where EACCESS
is returned; in udp.c (udp_connect, udp_sendto) and sock.c (inetbind). I would
exclude udp.c since ping uses a SOCK_RAW socket; in sock.c the error is
returned if the usere isn't root and the port is priviledged, none of which
are true when I try to ping. All other Oses I have around (SunOS, Solarisx86,
SCO, HP_UX) permit this operations and I receive several replies from the
network. I did notice the comment in udp.c that says that you must
turn on broadcast first but I'm not sure if this applies to raw sockets.

Can someone show me what I'm doing wrong?

 Just for the record I've installed (and am happilly running) linux on a 60 Meg partion, of which 10 Meg is swap. No X but gcc&emacs, plus utils...

        It does. Why don't you call Novell or IF and find out!!!
        a COMPLETE UW system can be had for under $400.00 which

:
: Through the use of the boot parameter "tmc8xx=0xca00,5" I've been able to
: get Linux (Slackware 1.2.0, from Trans-Ameritech's CD #3) to see the SCSI
: card, but it reports "0 tapes, 0 drives, 0 CD-ROMs". The CD is at SCSI
: address 2, and can be seen by the Future Domain BIOS (v8.4), Windows 3.1,
: and Windows NT 3.1.
:

I'm using a Toshiba TXM3301E1 external CD-ROM with a Future Domain
SCSI interface (TMC-845/TMC-950 chipset) on a Linux-box running
MCC-interm 1.0+.  With my card autoprobe doesn't work, -no ROM;
but lilo can pass the information (address, and IRQ) to the
kernel on boot-up.

Your lilo.conf file will need an entry to pass the SCSI's address, and IRQ
to the kernel (see the *append* entry), here is my lilo.conf file:

        # /etc/lilo.conf created by install.lilo Sat Apr  2 22:24:06 BST 1994.
        # added CD-ROM {append = "tmc8xx=0xDE000,5"} 23 APR 94-ljl-
        #
        install = /boot/boot.b
        compact
        delay = 30 # optional, for systems that boot very quickly
        #prompt # use instead of delay to force response to boot prompt
        #vga = normal   # force sane state
        #ramdisk = 0    # paranoia setting
        #root = current # use "current" root
        boot = /dev/hda
        image = /boot/vmlinuz
          read-only
          label = linux
          append = "tmc8xx=0xDE000,5"
        image = /boot/vmlinuz.old
          label = linux.old
          optional
          read-only

Here is edited data from my /usr/adm/messages file:

        : scsi0 : Seagate ST-01/ST-02
        : scsi : 1 hosts.
        :   Vendor: TOSHIBA   Model: CD-ROM XM-3301TA  Rev: 1651
        :   Type:   CD-ROM                             ANSI SCSI revision: 02
        : Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, id 4, lun 0
        : scsi : detected 1 CD-ROM drive total.
        : Scd sectorsize = 2048 bytes

Proof :-).

If you need more info, I can send you a rather complete document (long) on
how I installed the CD-ROM on my system.

I just got the Plug and Play CD this afternoon. I installed the "custom"
installation, but now when I try xinit, it ALWAYS waits for a long time, then
times out. I tried using the standard X configuration, and copying the
Xconfig file I had in my previous (Slackware 1.1.1) installation, and both
had the same result. Is there something else I can try before I chuck the
thing and buy the new TransAmeritech CD?

Does anyone know how I can get (or turn on) the rexec daemon (rexecd)
on linux? I need to test out some packages like reflectionX and eXcursion
using the X-server supplied with linux and rexec needs to be ruiing on
the host.

PC ---> LINUX (Xserver)

PC can use Xwindows.

I have had the same problem using DRDOS under the emulator. There are no problems
if the disc is formatted under the emulator, so it looks like a problem with DOSFS.
I suspect that is not the /dev/fd device driver that needs to be modified but the
msdos filesystem. If I find that this is a problem that arises with Acorn 486 Linux
then I will probable sit down and fix it. So far using a RiscPC to format DOS
discs has not produced any problems with Linux so maybe the problem has been
fixed in DOSFS.

The SCSI adapter will not work with Linux. I returned it and got
myself a Adaptec 1542CF which works fine.
