Dear Everyone,

I'm new to Linux, in fact, I just installed it a few days ago. I really like
it's feeling as I'm always a UNIX user.

I encountered a few problems, one of which is to get Microsoft J Mouse,
(Version2) and the bus version working with XFree86.

I've followed the HOWTO for busmouse already but it still doesn't get me
going... I'm sure some of you DO use MS J Mouse, so please help!!!

 Hi there.. I've written/am in the process of writing a BBS that runs under
Linux. Originally, I had written a BBS for the Amiga and had run that for
about 2 years.. after deciding that the Amiga architecture was not
sufficient, I moved on to Linux...

 The BBS program is called 'NVBBS' (for NewVision)... it supports local
message bases, local email/internet email (from within the BBS prog, it
has its own mail shell...) Transfers are semi-operational right now...

 It's written in C...

 The menus are also fully configurable (command names are all set from
within text files..) Each User is given a seperate Linux account, with the
shell set to the BBS...

 It's not available on the net (yet), but you can call my system at
+1 401 943-3446 (The Ministry of Knowledge BBS), 14.4k v.32bis, 19.2k Zyxel..
to check it out..

A quick guess is that the IRQ is wrongly set. Linux expects IRQ11; the
Mitsumi doc says that IRQ10 is standard. Linux also expects i/o at 300.

How about waffle? You can get the shareware version for dos at nearly
every ftp site..read the docs, play with the setup then if you like it
order the source code from the author.

As for login, well you type "BBS" then it invokes a waffle shell were the
user logs in with their name and password..or if you feel really daring
give everyone shell accounts and limit them to ~/user/someone and the
let them go from there

xcal has the alarm feature as well. There is (somewhere) a motif version
of xcal that has an option of displaying as a real calendar, rather than as a

I was trying to use to use the Linux aha1542 driver on an
Adaptec 1540A controller and it worked only (very) partially.

The adapter was correctly recognized and the first 1024 Bytes
could be read correctly from the disk. After that, a read error
ocurred (the controller/drive combination is usable from
another OS).

From the Adaptec manuals I conclude, that the only difference
between 1540 and 1542 is the absence/ presence of a floppy
controller. So I guess, that this should not be the reason
of my problems.

The manuals say also, that 1540B/1542B are a superset of
1540A/1542A. So, I guess that the Linux driver supports only
1540B/1542B. Is ther anybody out there who knows, what I have
to change to make the driver work with my card?

Many thanks in advance

Stephan

   Make sure you're recompiled the kernel with Logitech bus mouse
support enabled. The distributed kernel doesn't contain it, and you'll
beat your head against the wall indefinately until you recompile.

Actually, X is fine--especially considering that X works the same
everywhere. :) But SVGAlib should definitely be supported... The

After taking a quick look at /usr/include/malloc.h I wrote the following
quick test program, which works.

/************************************************************************/

#define MALLOC_0_RETURNS_NULL

#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <malloc.h>

int main(void)
{
        char *p;

                printf("BAD\n");

        printf("%p %c\n", p, *p);

        if((p = (char *)malloc(0)) == NULL)
                printf("AHAH!\n");
        else
                printf("Hoo, boy!\n");

        printf("%p %c\n", p, *p);

        return(0);
}

/************************************************************************/

You must insert the #define before you #include malloc.h. Alternalteively,
you can leave the line out and compile with the following line:

gcc -DMALLOC_0_RETURNS_NULL -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes filename.c

: Problem 2: abort() does not dump.

: Even with the default signal handlers in place, the following statement

: abort();

: does not produce a core file.

If you read the man page for bash, which is undoubtedly the shell you are
using, or type help help, followed by help, followed by help ulimit, you
will see how to control the creation and size of core files.

Have fun, and keep reading!

You can use the Bt driver *now* for your Rev D board with 16MB - I do
this now. If we can get the bounce-buffering working for 1.1.5,
you'll also be able to go to 32MB with it. Whether or not the 3.37
eprom fixes the >16MB DMA problem is, however, still an open question
for ANY of the operating systems. Buslogic claims success with 3.37,
yet I've now seen more than a few reports that tend to indicate that
they did NOT fix the problem. If this is the case, then the worst
that will happen with your FreeBSD 1.1.5 system is that it'll simply
"bounce" DMA >16MB and be a very small degree slower, but it'll work.
You'll know whether or not we got the bounce-buffer stuff working
properly in 1.1.5 when you see the release notes!

Hi Chris!

good to see a prominent POV figure on the Linux groups :)

POV has been available for Linux since POV 1.0 and there are many

A supported version would be a good idea, although I'd think that

This is what rstatd reads so it is the kernel that is not providing the info.

        If you tried hooking the Aztech CD to the CDROM port on a SB, SBpro, or SB16, it wont work as the Aztech uses a mitsumi interface and the mentioned SB's use a panasonic interface. I tried that and it didnt work (Comp USA tecxh said that it would) , then I hooked it to my other SB (SB16-MCD) to the Mitsumi port and used the Aztech driver using "polling" DMA and it works fine. I could not get it to work by assigning it a DMA channel.
        I bought a Reveal CDROM (in reality a Panasonic 563) for about 190.00 and it plugs right into the SBPRO I have. FWIW, the ARIS cdrom utility says that they both are within MPCII specs with the Reveal being very slightly quicker/faster. To be fair the Reveal is on 486DX50 and the Aztech is on a 386sx16.

It works fine for an 3200.
