Received my issue 2 about three weeks ago, and a copy of issue 1 arrived
in the mail on Monday. Remember that they're still trying to unsnarl
the Teamster strike.

Subject: Strange occurrence with modem and virtual memory
Date: 27 May 1994 13:21:29 -0700

I had an interesting experience last Sunday. I'm not sure where to
post it, here or in development, so here goes.

I am using X on a 486DX2-66 with 16Mb RAM and 20Mb swap. I never expected
to run out of virtual memory, but... I defined a function key in fvwm
to bring up an Xman session in a window. I made the mistake of holding
down the key until auto-repeat kicked in, and brought the system to a
complete standstill, except for the flickering hard drive light. The only
thing that worked was the mouse cursor.

Suddenly the phone started ringing continuously (as in "one long ring"). I
picked it up and heard a wierd white-noise type sound and hung it back up,
whereupon it began ringing again. So, I unplugged the phone, assuming the
computer was at fault, and waited. After a while, dozens of Xman windows
appeared on my screen. I tried to run 'top' to examine the system load,
but it reported "out of virtual memory". Free (?) reported a grand total of
some 10K free swap space. After killing a few Xmans, I ran ps and counted
around *42* Xman processes active.

I killed off all the Xmans. The phone had stopped ringing, but it was all
messed up - just that strange noise, no dialtone. I shutdown the system and
did a complete power-off just to be safe, then brought up Seyon and did an
explicit hang-up. No effect on the phone.

The phone remained out of service for maybe 60-90 minutes, during which time
I wondered what I was going to tell the phone company. Happily, the phone
circuits evidently reset themselves, and it returned to normal. A friend
reported trying to call during the interruption and getting a busy signal.
Since we have call waiting, I suspect that maybe the machine had switched
the phone on and off the hook too fast for the switching circuits, and they
went into some sort of limbo state.

Has anyone encountered this sort of thing? Any idea why running out of
virtual memory might cause Linux to start playing with the modem? Or what
happened to the phone circuit? I don't believe Seyon was running, but its
possible (somewhere else on the virtual desktop). If not, then I suppose
this is just another tidbit of Linux Lore for the record. :)

Yes, I can see your point. Thanks for being patient and explaining this
to me. I have no experience with *nix text-processing tools (other than
vi :), since I had WordPerfect and did all my work on a DOS machine.

Understood.

Great.

I assume then that JOE is being used as the core for this project? I had
seen it mentioned several times, but didn't realize you had settled on it.
JOE already has a pretty flexible configuration file, which looks like it
ought to do most of what I want. Definable function keys would be a nice
feature, but perhaps not worth the extra effort, given the existing
interface.

Thanks. (I didn't even know there *was* one)

This project sure seems to have gotten started fast. I just noticed it
the other day among the bulk of other Linux news... thanks for bringing
me up to date on the stuff I asked about.

Do you get those errors? I have a Wangtek 6200HS and haven't tried
using it with Linux yet (just installed the latest Slackware last night,
the new color install is MUCH better than what it used to be like).
Anyway, if you have any info on getting the 6130 or 6200 working under

I'm running the SMC Ultra Plus Combo on Slackware-1.2.0. Worked on initial

Harry;

Are you by chance running an STB Wind/X or private-branded CompUSA S3
board that uses the 911 chip? If so, there is a problem in that the board
utilizes the address (0x2e8) normally allocated to COM4:. This caused
me endless grief under MSDOS/Win3.1 with symptoms very similar to what
your described. Make sure you don't have a getty on /dev/ttyS3 or
/dev/cua3 under Linux.

You can get an update to the PROM firmware (2 chips) from Adaptec to
bring your board up to -B functionality. Adaptec can be reached at
US (800) 959-SCSI, tech support is at (408) 945-2550, and they have

Hi all,

I'm running Slackware 1.2.0 on my 486 sx, and wish to use
it to run X software at work whilst displaying the output
at home. In view of the high bandwidth required for
reasonably fast operation can anyone out there recommend
a suitable (and compatible) modem (say a V.42bis - perhaps

I don't want pay, unless it's a good vegetarian prime steak; and school's

Actually, Greg Lee wrote the original color patches. Yeah, you guys had
your hands on them too, but at this point I think there's more of my code
than yours in the color patch that Slackware uses. (If you're counting ;^)

I didn't "mutate" the patch yesterday, you know. There's a version

But this version is not the one that uses /etc/DIR_COLORS, and is not the
version that they were looking for.

The version that supports the /etc/DIR_COLORS configuration file (and
colorization according to file extension) can be found on ftp.cdrom.com, in:
/pub/linux/slackware_source/a/bin/slackware-color-ls.tar.gz.
The GNU fileutils source is in the same directory.
