Current discussion center around building a joe+mouse+menus+keys based system
and making sure that it'll function on a typical terminal without a mouse.

Well actually it's possible to have a console based WYSIWYG by using the
SVGA library and some judicious fonts programming. Later on the the project
though.

Previewing is definitely in the plans.

looks like you've got one of the more recent ones. If you look on
the card I think you'll see a version 1.03 on the BIOS. If so, I
urge you to try the latest driver available on tsx-11, but I and one
other person I've talked to have had problems with it and the 1.03
BIOS, where people with older BIOSes have none. If your machine hangs
after a fair amount of drive access, (mine doesn't "hang" exactly, the
drive/controller just go to lala land, something to do with a problem
in the scsi_abort I believe) try using the version .3, which is a lot
slower, but doesn't hang the new bioses. If you need specific help
getting it to work at all, I can try, just tell me where exactly you're
having the problems.

Hmm...Since Linux is just another dialect of UNIX which can run
X-Windows, I think it would be better to ask for a version of POV-Ray that
is specifically supported for X, not just Linux. Currently, POV-Ray 2.2
allows you to render on-screen in an X window. What other "X specific
additions" are you looking for? A point-and-click modeller would be nice,
but that's a whole different story, completely beyond the scope of the
POV-Team's design goals, as I understand them. I have heard about an
effort going on to design a modeller for X

I tried to setup a hard disk so it would be possible to boot
Linux (default), MS-DOS and SCO. Linux is the most recent
Slackware distribution. Lilo is set to boot from MBR on a SCSI disk.

Everything was simple as long as we dealt with MS-DOS and Linux
only. After adding SCO Linux was still booting, but it was
"could not find boot" for SCO, until - in a fit of adventurism -
we decided to make SCO partition active. Right now it boots
like it was planned from the very beginning, but I still have
two questions:
  - why it is SCO partition which has to be active and is it normal,
    or we screwed something badly?
  - what if one would want/need two OSes fighting for an active partition?

I guess that some confusion stems from a fact that documents describing
Lilo, which I found on sunsite, seems to have be only loosely connected
with the stuff which actually operates on my system.

Subject: Building a Linux Box (howto?)
Date: 27 May 1994 02:03:21 -0400

I need to specify a hardware platform to become my personal machine at
work. Thanks to Linux I've gotten my first sysadm job! My boss has seen my
Linux system and read the recent positive magazines articles on Linux.
Anyways, thank you Linus and all of you helpful Linuxers working together to
make Linux a great OS. The plan at work is too install a new X-windows based
database. I'd like this Linux-PC to be a showpiece of Linux and I'll be
using it to tutor our users in Xwindows.

I'd like to build a "hot" yet cost-effective machine. My at-home machine
is an ISA Bus 486dx-33 with 8meg RAM and 340meg HD, et-4000 and svga
monitor.

I'm thinking along these lines:

        486dx-66 (or dx-2, or ???)
        16 meg RAM
        EISA motherboard
        BusLogic Controller
        16-17" Monitor and video-card
        cd-rom
        nice mouse and keyboard
        floppydrives

A scsi drive which combines speed, reliability and good meg/$ ratio
        in the 500-1000 meg range.

A tape drive isn't necessary as i can backup to networked DAT drives.
Likewise my employer supplies 3c509 NICs.

I remember browsing a thread of "hot" Linux boxes a while back. I just wish
that I'd saved it but I just started this job. Any pointers and advice will
be greatly appreciated. Perhaps some of you have comparable machine that
you can describe for me. Also, what CD-ROM Linux packages you like.

Many thanks!

-Dan

A related question....

I am running a Genoa CLGD chipset ona CTX 1451 monitor. I managed to get
my X display working so as to deliver better than normal display at
1024x768. When I return to MS-Windows, even after a cold boot, my fonts in
the 1024x768 modes are fuzzy. When I switch to 800x600 everything looks
fine.
Does the XF386_SVGA driver write into the PROMs on the monitor?

The file DIR_COLORS is from a Slackware mutated version of my color-ls
patches. It is not useful for color-ls 3.9.0.2.

Color-ls 3.9.0.2 is available from eecs.nwu.edu in

If this is the drive I got I would warn you off it in a big way. I got the
Compudyne CD-ROM (believe the brand was called AZTECH) double speed. After a
week of frustration I took it back. The service person said they were getting
an awful lot of returns on the drive. And as I was getting my Creative Labs
CD-ROM I noticed them taking the rest into the back room! In my opinion the
Compudyne CDROM is complete crap, and the telephone support was worthless. I
quote the guy on the other end "There's something wrong with your system...".
Yeah thanks a lot dude.

BTW, the Creative Labs one works flawlessly with everything I've tried so far
(Myst, 7th-Guest, MegaRace, Photostyler, etc.) Sometimes it's worth it to pay
a little more for better quality. Also, I think the Creative Labs is a
Panasonic but I'm not sure (not in front of my PC at the moment).

Hope this Helps,

Eric

No. There's very little demand for a pure BSD emulator under Linux,
just as there's very little demand for a Linux emulator under BSD.
There isn't much commercial software for either platform (more for Linux
than for BSD, I expect), so why bother? You can just get the sources
and recompile for most things, usually with minimal porting.

What do you need it for?

Try ical - it is a tcl/tk based calendar. Compiles with no trouble under

Find it in harbor.ecn.purdue.edu:/pub/tcl, or in Europe

It starts printing right on the first line of the page.
Does somebody knows anything about this?

I'm not at home right now and I don't recall all the versions of these products
