Hi!
I've got some problems while installing xwin on my computer. The thing is
that UMC svga monitor (VESA emulation I belive) is not supported by the
install. program.
Any suggestions?

well, have you checked out netaudio??? it has some nice stuff, even a network

Oh, if it's a gif/jpeg viewer you're after try zgv2.1 (or whatever release it'

takes less CPU/time than running something under the dosemu. It uses the
svgalib.

I must've answered this one a dozen times. Maybe we should add it to
the FAQ.

Use the Gateway CMOS setup program to change the HD from Auto Configured
(which confuses Linux/Lilo) to User Type 1 with 16 heads, 1048 tracks,
and 63 sectors. No more problem.

Is NS.UU.NET outside your network? it might be something simple like a
misplaced 0, our 255 in your netmask/network address setup. Another thing to
try would be reducing your mtu size. This can be done in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 in
the ifconfig section add "mtu 576" as a parameter to the ifconfig command.
( If you are running on an ethernet this results in ip packets of 552 bytes,
which seems to be some kind of magic number with all the other unix ).

Another thing is to use multiple nameservers! Do this by adding multiple
entries in your /etc/resolv.conf file.

Hope this helps - I'm new to this as well, but I'm sure I'll get corrected if
anything here is false.

You can add DiamondBase onto that list. It's a C++ class library to allow
programmers to have access to database functionality. It generates very
efficient relation code from relation descriptions. It's licenced under GPL
type conditions for non-commercial users, commerical users are almost the

One comment on designing a new word processor:

PLEASE don't hard code a lot of assumptions like all language is compose
of ASCII or each "character" can be entered by hitting one key on your
keyboard.

Of course I don't expect you to design a complete Multi-lingual unicode
based word processor this minute, but at least don't make it
difficult for those of us who may want to. A very small amount of thought
now can save a huge amount of work later.

Thank you.

I've seen a couple of posts requesting this info, so here it is. Maybe this
should be added to the FAQ's.

Edit the file /etc/conf/pack.d/sysmsg/space.c. At the bottom of this you
will find the following lines:

extern int kdputchar(), kdgetchar();
extern int asyputchar(), asygetchar();
extern int asyputchar2(), asygetchar2();

struct conssw conssw =
{
    kdputchar,
    0,
    kdgetchar
};

Change all occurences of kdputchar and kdgetchar to asycputchar and
asycgetchar. Rebuild your kernel and reboot, connecting a terminal to
the first serial port. Behold, all messages on the serial port.

Here I've got a Linux-box which must be used as a file-server. Therefor I've
setup a directory /export with rwx access for all.
In the /etc/exports I added the line :
/export  (rw,insecure,root_quash)

The problem is as follows :

I CAN mount the dir. /export, look in it, make directory's, change to them.
The problem is I can't make a file in any directory.

Please anyone with a solution, send it to me, or else we must look for some

Hope this isn't a FAQ (esp. in comp.music), but I couldn't see it in
any of the FAQ lists...

Does anyone know of a program that will allow me to enter music onto a
stave, save and then play it. Even just a melody line would be
helpful! Ideally it would be PD/copylefted and able to run on Linux,
though DOS/Windows might be OK - commercial if nothing else around.
Would special hardware be required? (I'm not especially interested in
printing out the music, though such a capability might be useful.)

Replies by mail, please, as I can't follow these groups.

Thanks.

    Thanks to all who responded. It turns out that the latest card revision,
3.7, requires some initialization not provided by the version of the sound
driver included with version 1.0 of the kernel. The updated driver,
version 2.5, is in kernel versions 1.1.10 and later. It can also be
gotten separately at ftp.funet.fi in /pub/OS/Linux/xtra/sndkit as
snd-driv-2.5.tar.gz. Also get snd-driv-2.5.README for instructions
on installing the new driver and recompiling the kernel.

    Special thanks to Markus Aroharju for this information, and for
providing the update to Hannu Savolainen's most excellent sound driver.

Cheers,
Doug
