If you do this, you have to use another format (at least I think so)

No problems. It worked fine with the yggdrasil .99.13 ,.14 and the new 1.?
I use an old mitsumi fx 005 cdrom with the soundblaster 16 mcd. Some dos
benchmarks say that the drive runs a little slower with the sb16, but it
works great under linux. It also works well under dos when I have to boot
it -- argh. I do have some second thoughts about the mcd card; I would
rather use a scsi adapter and drive for the advantages in speed and
expandability.

What's a good program to view GIFs under Linux? I have a small collection,
and I'd like to view them. I have standard VGA. I could thumb thru the
faq and see how to switch to VGA mode, but if you can include the answer,
I'd appreciate it. I think there was an install error when I installed
the VGA library, or something. It doesn't seem to complie/work correctly.

Simple enough.

>b) Novell is evil because they might be better than you at programming!?

I never said that Novell was "evil" or anything of the kind. And it
remains to be seen if Novell's professional programmers are better than
the loose-knit volunteers of the Linux world. (For the humour impaired:
That's a joke.) The point is that the status quo of the Linux community
should be preserved, at least to some extent. If Novell is able to put
a team of full-time professional programmers to work on Linux, they can
essentially make the work of the many volunteers obsolete. Linux would
become Novell's free operating system. Is that something that you want
to see?

At any rate, see Linux Journal issue #3 (coming soon to a newsstand near
you) for a fairly complete discussion of this dilemma. There are other
sides to the issue but the LJ column articulates them more clearly.

You need to tell us more about how you want to connect your Linux box to the
Netware LAN. I can only guess a couple of scenarios:

  1. Trying to access other Unix/Linux hosts over Novell LAN
?

You probably need to configure the Netware server to route TCP/IP.
It's fairly easy to do. Then any IP traffic can be routed to other segments on
          your LAN through the server.

    2. Trying to access Novell servers via tcp/ip.

Couple ways here: Load NFS on your Novell server and you can mount the
volumes you want on your Linux box. We do this and it's
working fine. NFS is pretty pricey though....

Find a copy of Hellsoft's (Free) FTP nlm for Netware. You can
just FTP files to and from your Linux boxes and the server.
Works fine and price is right.

Well, I'm sure I've missed your point, but please do describe your situation in more detail
and I'm sure you'll get more valuable suggestions.

   Cheers !

Hello!

We are running a SUN with many thousands of users and wanted to offload
the mail sending and receiving as well as local news server (we are not
carrying USENET, just local groups) and smaller services to a Linux box. I
was wondering if people had experince with running massive amounts of
e-mail on a Linux box and any hints. We currently process on the order of
20,000+ messages per day and being a new "Public Access Network" expect
quite a bit more traffic in the coming months. As a server, we plan on
using a 486.

BTW: Lets say that we are doing all the mail for 10,000 users, would that
count on the Linux Bean Counter, or would everyone have to be directly
using it?  :')

As nice as OI may be, I think it is a very bad idea to standardize on
a binary only product. What if ParcPlace no longer wants to provide a
new binary version when a new OI version appears or when Linux
shared-libs get a new structure? Every major component of a
standardized Linux distribution should always be available in source
code.

Not Tcl/Tk, but Tk should be the standard. Tk is what you 'see and
feel', Tcl is merely a programming language behind it. Tk is the
toolkit and widget set. Tk also is available for scheme and perl. The
user wont notice what language is behind it.

That makes Tk even a better candidate for a standard I think.

An important advantage in functionality compared to other widget-sets
is the Tk canvas widget, which also makes drawing and painting of
lines, circles etc. be done in a standard widget. Motif for example,
has to resort to basic XLib calls for such things. Tk can use a
standard for this (except when full speed is needed).

From what I've found from calling some distributors, you paid
about $1 US more then the dealer paid. I also custom make cables
to any reasonable length. Wizvax has some cables in the 100-150 ft
length.

I just talked with one of my suppliers and they've lowered their prices
on my order, so I've lower ours. As they say, email for current
prices, they can change often.

CABLES:

Each cable consists of 3 parts: The satin cable and 2 modular plugs.
An adapter (see ADAPTERS) is added to the end to change the cable from
RJ-45 (8 and 10 pin) / RJ-12 (6 pin) / RJ-11 (4 pin) to RS-232.

Maximum cable length is affected by many factors. I have used 175 ft.
cables for terminals with no problems.

The Item 901 BB2016 8 conductor Modem Cable has a 10 pin plug at the
Boca Board end and an 8 pin plug at the adapter end. This cable is NOT
a straight through cable. It can be extended at the 8 pin plug end with
an 8 conductor cable.

All other cables are wired straight through and have the same plug at
both ends. The RJ-45/RS-232 adapters determine the cable type. Short
cables may be coupled together to make longer cables. Changing the
adapter will change the use for the cable.

STANDARD CABLES:
