Hope this helps,

I am considering buying a Zeos Pantera machine with 486DX2-66, 16MB RAM,
3PCI 5 ISA slots, on board Adaptec 6360 SCSI controller chip and a Diamond
Speedstar 64 PCI (1meg) video card.

I am wondering if someone out there has the same or a similiar machine
running Linux ? I would hate to buy the machine and find out I made a
mistake. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a million.

I have not tried INN on Linux yet, but on the SVR4 machine at work,
INN was much easier to get compiled than Cnews.
(I gave up on Cnews after finding the 3rd clash between a builtin
function and a library function with the same name but different
params/functionality)

I now run Cnews at home (under Linux) and INN at work, and both do the
job. INN seems to use less CPU but uses more memory (the server is
permanently resident)

People that are annouyed by seeing things appearing on the market for

Look for "gmod". I have version 1.2b, and it is great. I believe
a newer version was made available in the meantime.
I also recently downloaded a program called "s3mod" but it is no good
for playing .MODs (it supports a different format, maybe it is good at
playing that)

Gmod has no X support, you have to run it in an xterm. Nice project!

This look disturbing. Having two linux kernel going away. One claiming
to be the best or more standard...

I doubt it will happen because there are many advantage to stick
to the current one.

1-Linux is free and is spreading like hell. You better have a
super whatever to beat it and claiming to be it.

2-Linux is certainly the best general purpose OS
on PCs (performance reliability footprint ...). Judging by
the different offering out there (OS/2 SCO
Windows), it looks like debugging an OS is almost impossible
except when it is truely open and testers have access to its
internal.
So I doubt a company may create a better linux kernel and claim
(and sell) it is more reliable.

3-Linux is like X. Nobody has won trying to defeat X with a better
X. Sun lately has droped its X/news stuff because it could not stay
current with X (They were still on R4 while R5 was there for some time).

If I'm not mistaken I believe that the 1.0 sources will give these errors when
attempting to compile. Grab the latest kernel patches from
/pub/OS/Linux/PEOPLE/Linus/v1.0 and v1.1, recompile and all should be well.

We publish a PC Unix - Linux Catalog under the name ACC Bookstore.

The various Linux CD's we offer are among the most popular products we carry.

We are looking for Linux tools and applications that our customers are
asking for. These might be like Motif (SWiM from Sequoia) or Basic for
Linux (from Basmark) or games and applications.

I suppose our task of finding Linux applications will become much easier
once Novell have stamped Linux with their "Good-Housekeeping seal of
Approval"  ;-)

In any case if you produce such products or can recommend suppliers who
do we would be much obliged.

Left is the right way to go.

Nothing of the above is my opinion, nor is it the opinion of anybody else.

Subject: Please help: trouble configuring network
Date: 17 May 1994 05:39:35 GMT

I am having great difficulty getting networking to run correctly
on our Linux machine.

Vital information:
GW2K P5-90 running Slackware Linux 1.0.8. Machine has 32MB RAM,
540 MB IDE drive, ATI AX0 GUP, SMC Ethernet Ultra Elite,
configured for I/O 280, RAM D800, IRQ 5 as suggested. Zero wait
states are not enabled.

Symptoms (besides syslog messages) are that ping, ftp, telnet
all hang. Most noteworthy is that "route" _usually_ hangs up
when trying to list the routing tables. Sometimes it is possible
to add the route specifications after the system has booted such
that they will appear in the listing of the routing tables, but
under such circumstances, I received "network is unreachable" errors.
The behavior is not consistent, and I sometimes power-cycle my machine
just in case the interface is hung beyond what a warm boot will fix.
But NO LUCK getting over to anything so far.

Undoubtedly, I have just walked in when everyone has just finished
a huge thread describing the answer to my question in exquisite detail.
Leave it to me, OK? I do hope someone knows what is going on in my
case. What am I missing here? If more information is desired, please
ask and I will supply!

The following is a reproduction of my /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1:

/sbin/ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
/sbin/route add -net 127.0.0.0

IPADDR=192.76.178.28
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.76.178.0
BROADCAST=192.76.178.255
GATEWAY=192.76.178.1

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 ${IPADDR} broadcast ${BROADCAST} netmask ${NETMASK}
/sbin/route add -net ${NETWORK} netmask ${NETMASK}
/sbin/route add default gw ${GATEWAY} metric 1

-- I receive the following messages in syslog after bootup:

May 16 23:44:55 routed[51]: Adding route to net/host 0.0.0.0 through gateway 0.0.0.0 : Invalid argument
May 16 23:47:55 routed[51]: deleting route to interface eth0 (timed out)

Hmm, I don't know about this one...

I just recently payed $18 CANADIAN (roughly $14 US) for a box of TWO cables
and TWO 25-pin adapters from BOCA themselves at a local computer shop.
Product codes are BOCA IODTE2 (terminal) and IODCE2 (modem).

The X version (vcr) wants libxv3.so.2. Does anyone know where to find it?
Isn't that a rather old lib? libxv3.so.3 doesn't seem to be compatible.

BTW, the text version is very impressive so far. Could this FINALLY be the
Linux GUI word-processor everyone has been waiting for.

Subject: My Opnion about Linux-Cdroms
Date: 17 May 94 11:28:06 MET

Hi
I have no question to ask , I want only to post my opinion about the
Trans-ameritech CDROM release of Linux. A year ago I purchased the Yggdrasil
cdrom and I was really enjoying my Linux system. Then I saw the new
trans-ameritech release of linux 1.0 for an attracting price and ordered it.
After installing linux I was very surprised of the look and feel of this SLC
distribution . It looks very good. So what I want to say is That the
trans-ameritech CDROM is a good Linux-cdrom distribution. They send me the new
cdrom within 2 weeks as they said... So for people living in Europe I recommend
the trans-ameritech Linux-CDROM. I'am not claiming that the others resellers
are not to be considered, since I don't know them...

Ok, I have (had?) a big hope that the work Novell puts into Linux will
spread it to more and more people and help all of us. But if they are
*really* trying to do what many people seem to fear, namely violating
the GPL, we will have to show that we are a community and collect the
$$'s to pay the lawyers to defend our rights.
