I had the same problem. I worked around it by compiling that file with -O2.
The kernel seems to work fine, although I don't know if it is any faster.
It certainly is larger!

Hey, we aren't going to see that thread again, aren't we?
It is perfectly possible to have 800k-1MB/s speeds with FTP on ethernet.

Linux has worked on 2meg machines in the past, but it may well be that
this is no longer the case.
Even in the past, it was a problem to run "fancy install scripts" and
you would have to install it by hand, adding swapspace as early as
possible.

Anyway, if you want to do something useful you will need at least 4MB.

1.1.29 works fine.

I forgot to tell: The box with the error uses an IDE-HD (Toshiba),
the machine w.o. problems uses an ESDI-drive.

I hope this helps.

Subject: Suggestion to LILO folks
Date: Sat, 13 Aug 1994 06:17:49 GMT

I've installed and uninstalled Linux from time to time, always
running on a boot disk with DOS as my main booting OS. The last
time I installed was because I got a new 486DX2-66 with a 2mb
video card. Figured I'd try X. But, not being an frequent reader
of the comp.os.linux groups (for lack of time), my attempt failed
as soon as I realized XFree wouldn't work with my Diamond Stealth
Pro video card.

Well, this install, I put LILO on. Little did I realize it
would fry the video card on the first boot. It sure would be
nice to have some kind of obvious message warning of possible
system damage when using LILO with certain hardware. Sure, I
can't use the Diamond with Linux, but I can with other OS's,
and that's a couple hundred bucks down the drain.

Yes I am shopping for other than Diamond now, and yes I am
trying to read more now. But I'd thought I'd toss the suggestion
in case someone else cares.

I want to use this products with "not to big" databases (10.000

Which of those databases is more "reliable" and has more tools to
facilitate the work ???

I'll appreciate any help.

Thanks, Juan.

On my system, this pause was due to lost characters (i.e. fcs errors,
meaning resent packets) due to the masking of interrupts during disk
writes. The ide performance patches (now included in the kernel) with
hdparm eliminated those delays for me completely, and increased my
average throughput for ftp by about 200k/sec.

Subject: QUESTION: Secondary HD Controller Support (atdisk2) w/Recent Kernels
Date: 13 Aug 1994 07:41:13 GMT

I have spent a lot of time trying to modify the kernel to conform to the diffs
provided with atdisk2. It seems, though, that the kernel has changed so much
since 1.0.0 that I can't get atdisk2 to work. My problem lies with modifying
/usr/src/linux/drivers/block/hd1.c. There have been a lot of changes to the
way Linux handles hard drives, such as block mode, and the code is different
enough that trying to adapt the diff rejects to hd1.c is not working for me. I
know my way around C enough to figure out most things, but I can't seem to get
1.1.44 sufficiently patched.

Does anyone have new diffs to share with me? Or are there better ways to sup-
port drives on a secondary controller/IRQ 15 now than there were around the
time atdisk2 was put together?

I just had another idea: Can you patch the 1.0.0 kernel and add the changed
files to the latest? (This may or may not be a good idea, I don't know.)

Or does 1.1.44 support secondary controllers with a different IRQ and I'm ig-
norant of how to do it?

These should definitely be added to the new TeX distribution.
xhdvi is (a little?) buggy, but you can see *enormous* potential
there, especially for on-line documentation.

The latex files can all be obtained from:

        http://xxx.lanl.gov/hypertex/

hyperbasics.tex
article.hty (*)
book.hty (*)
report.hty (*)

Get the latest version of xhdvi and example hypertexed documents from:

        ftp://snorri.cpac.washington.edu/pub/hypertex/

xhdvi_0.5b.tar.Z
hypersamples.tar.Z
Install_Notes

Neither of the tar files do not include a parent directory, so create
one before you untar.

xhdvi compiles cleanly under Linux 1.0.8 (but see the README, you need a
quick edit of the Imakefile). xhdvi sometimes core dumps on the first
load of a document, but then loads it fine on the second try. If no
one has tracked this bug down yet I will take a look at it.

Under slackware 1.2, I installed the TeX files in

        /usr/TeX/lib/texmf/tex/hypertex

(this from memory, hope I got it right. It is the TEXINPUTS top-level
directory). Then you just insert

\input{lhyper}

just before the \documentstyle command in your regular latex document
and re-latex it (twice, if necessary, to get the table of contents
right). Presto, it's hyperlatexed!

I added the following to my .Xresources to get color highlighting
of the hyperlinks (which are underlined):

XHdvi*highlight: blue

(*) I'm not sure if these are needed. The rest of the latex stuff
you need is in hypersamples.tar.Z

According to the "EIP" and zSystem, the error occurs in the routine

    _do_cdu31a_request

I'm up to 1.1.44 now. The CDU31A problem's still there. I noticed some
after-effects of the error which may be of interest.

After booting without mounting CDU31A, and subsequently attempting to
mount it, and causing the error to occur:

        1. <Ctrl><Alt><Del> no longer works
        2. agetty won't restart after logging out of any login shell
        3. "df" hangs its VT and goes into an uninterruptable sleep
        4. the shutdown process fails (just stops) right after
           "Sending ... KILL.."

I'll bet other things are messed up which I just haven't noticed.

Today, since I upgraded from 1.1.42 to 1.1.44 in fact, I am experiencing GP
faults & kernel panics, apparently linked to the use of my serial ports.

I use an AST fourport compatable board, and the problem came in the programs
mgetty and uucico (which worked very well before).

Sometimes it hangs the whole system, sometimes it doesn't. Using the EIP
information provided by the kernel message, i saw the problems came from he
following routines :

0017d718 : _rs_interrupt_single
00180c07 : _wait_until_sent
0010e556 : _wake_up_interruptible

If it speaks to anybody ...

By the way, I am a little bit surprised to see that Linux uses 3.4 Mb of
system data, on my 20 Mb machine.

My kernel is standard, except I do not avec mathco emu, neither minix fs nor
xiafs. I use SLIP, PPP, NE2000, SBPCD, verbose SCSI errors, and an SB16
with all sound driver options enabled.

The check_*_media_change is now called from the operations
