Subject: Kernel 1.1.42 + Ultra24F + ext2fs = Corruption
Date: Thu, 11 Aug 1994 18:14:18 GMT

Hey Linux Developers,

I'm a lightweight on UNIX internals and on Linux in general, but I figure it's
my duty to let the people who make Linux know 1.1.42 ain't working on my box.

I have a 486/33 with 16MB and 660M Scsi HD. My SCSI adaptor is and Ultrastor
24F (that's right, EISA). I configured a striped down kernel with only SCSI
and Network support, I added all fs except OS/2. The build went smoothly, with
only a few warnings.

zImage-1.1.42 booted up like a dream, and I though all was well, until I tried
to build 'term200'.

I untar'ed term200 into /tmp and did a listing. It looked good. I then cd
into term200 and did another listing, still okay. I then tried to read the
README using less200 and bashes file completion. Less200 complained and tried
to dump core (no ulimit on my login). I did another listing and almost all the
files were _gone_, poof. I tried to do a 'pwd' and it failed with something
like 'unable to stat parent dir ..'. At this point that directory (term200)
is hosed. Fsck would fix it, but put all the files into /lost+found.

Good Fortune,
Bill

the error is an unmatched endif problem created by bison
where can I find a new version of bison if that is my problem?

: This doesn't sound like a good idea to me. The problem is every time

: initialization order dependency to the major numbers. Also, I believe
: that replaceable device drivers will mean that either you'd have a
: dependency in the rc file, or at card insertion time.

I think there is a place for both sorts of things. In part, it depends
on what the driver is used for. In my case, for PCMCIA, I decided to
pick a free major number on the fly, because I can easily have all my
PCMCIA utilities read /proc/devices to find the current mapping. With
other kinds of loadable device drivers, it just means that you have to
do a little more than just install a driver module -- you'll need to run
a script or something, to create appropriate device files, and to delete
them when the driver is unloaded.

As followup to my own article - Joel Katz has answered already - the
answer was:

    use `invalidate_buffers()'
    and `invalidate_inodes()'

And I looked for `invalidate_buffers' trough all possible include
files, using
    `find /usr/include -type f | xargs egrep invalidate_'
But this ignored the symlink /usr/include/linux and all linux/*.h
files...

And I recognized, that *I* have added the symbol to my ksyms.S some
weeks before to enable the unifix mcd driver as a loadable module.

My mind didn't serve...

Ok, thanks again.

I have had the same problem since kernel 1.1.34 and I have
IRQ 5 enabled on the drive interface card. Nothing else uses
this IRQ on my system. Are you using the Sony interface card
or are you accessing the drive through a sound card? Are the
numbers on the EIP line consistent when this problem occurs?
I tried using these numbers to figure out what kernel functions
were causing the problems but the location in zSystem would
jump all around each time. Do you have an IRQ set for the
drive or are you using the polling part of the driver?

I have the same problem with my sbprocd (Panasonic CR-563). On the same
machine, the SCSI CD works fine, but when I upgraded from 1.1.39 to 1.1.41,
the machine hang up at boot time trying to automount the CD-ROM.

If I do it manually, typing mount -t iso9660 /dev/sbprocd /cdrom1 -o ro,
I get the message : mount: mount point /cdrom1 does not exist.

Of course, if I replace /dev/sbprocd by /dev/scd0 in the mount command, it
works fine. Any idea ?

Ok. I narrowed it down now. I compiled 44 and the same thing happened.
Everything works fine until I move my mouse, then this error pops up.

Also, I was trying to mount some floppies earlier and got the following
error, "Kernel panic: EXT2-fs panic (device 2/0): ext2_read_inode:
unable to read i-node block".

The floppy appeared to mount fine, then when I did an "ls", it gave
that error. I went back trying it with different kernels, and the
same thing happened in 41-44. It could be the disk. I've just rebooted
too many times. :( Anyone else having floppy problems?

I am also experiencing the same errors with my Sony CDU-33A
drive as Vince. I have noticed that in amongst the MANY
"too many consecutive attentions" errors in /var/adm/messages
there are messages like the following:
Aug 7 08:50:30 jaguar kernel: ns: 11 or
Aug 7 08:50:25 jaguar kernel: Ts: 11 or
Aug 7 08:50:23 jaguar kernel: ~s: 11 The ns, Ts, ~s varies but
the "11" is constant (this is also the number that follows the
"too many consecutive attentions" messages). This eleven number is
related to the "CDU31A_MAX_CONSECUTIVE_ATTENTIONS" define in cdu31a.c
which is set to 10. Vince and i thought perhaps because we have
fairly fast machines (I have a 486DX4-100 and he has a Pentium) this
might have something to do with this error (i.e. perhaps the CPU is
trying to do the various checks in the while loops in cdu31a.c too
fast for the drive). Is this possible? If so is there some way to
account for this in the driver code? I believe the author of the
        code is Corey Minyard (minyard@wf-rch.cirr.com).

Actually, the strictly correct version is:

int main(int argc, char *argv[], char *envp[])

The third argument is optional and points to a list of environment strings.
The last string in the list is empty to indicate the end (i.e. envp[last][0]
== '\0'). Under most Un*x this list will look like:

VAR1=contents1
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/etc/bin
...

This list can also be accessed through

extern char **environ;

to avoid envp if you like and to provide global access.

Hi folks,

does anybody know if there are LINUX drivers and/or development tools

Many thanks for any reply.

Subject: patch43 vs. ne2000 clones
Date: Thu, 11 Aug 1994 19:19:40 GMT

Hi, folks. I just brought up patch43 on my 486 boxes and found that I have
problems talking to the Ethernet card, which is a Novell NE2000 (clone?).
"Haapinet" was running fine at PL42.

The card is seen at driver init time, at the right ports and IRQ, which are
0x280 and IRQ 12 in this case, but programs like "portmap", "ping", and others
simply report that "eth0 not present" when they run.

GCC 2.5.8 and libs4.5.26 used here. Nothing special, nor terrifically outdated.

On my little 386sx at work, with a 3C503 card, patch43 comes up fine.

I'll have to look over that patch some, I guess.

Later,

Well, not much later patch44 was found, and it appears to fix all these
problems. Secure from general quarters.

I've heard reports of people using -O2 vs -O3 on some benchmarking
programs and they have reported some interesting speed improvements.

I'm not sure what I believe yet because I haven't tried
any yet.

I'd wait for further gcc versions before makeing 2.6.x the standard for
linux though. (This is what H.J Lu is doing anyway) As of this moment,
2.6 breaks g++ on linux, and has some big optimizing problems.
