Below is a tcp header debug. But first the hardware config

2 linux machines, both with slackware, have tried both kernels (1.0.8
and 1.1.8 with net3), one has an ne2000 the other 3c503.  They are
connect on an ethernet (10baseT) to a cisco terminal server (cs500, or
something like that) with 9.2.1 (or is it 9.21) proms.

the easiest way to lock up your terminal is to run pine, touch the
'l' key and select a different folder which has a screen full of
messages headers in it.

Like I said below is the output we get.  Take a look at the seqence
numbers....I plan to put a sniffer out on our net to look at it more
but really need help on this

I'm running Linux 0.99 pl 13.  I'm writing a client-server app and seem to
have hit a wall.  The server listens to a socket and, when something is
received, forks a child to handle the request.  My problem is that when
the child dies the parent seems to die as well.  The parent has stuff like

How many sleeps I do seems to be related to how much work the child has to do.
If I try to restart the application then the bind() returns a 'port in use'
error.  I've gotten pretty familiar with the ps command trying to find my
parent lurking in my system with no luck.  The only way I can bind to that
port again is to reboot.  I can also recompile with a different port, it
will work again exactly once and then I need to recompile/reboot again.

So, uh, what do I do next?  Is there any way I can find out what process
has my port?  Is there any way a process can lurk around and not show up
with ps?  Why would a dying child take it's parent with it?

In case it makes a difference I can't get my lpd daemon running either.
I type /etc/lpd followed by ps and no lpd shows up.  I put it into my
rc.local boot script, still no lpd.  The most obvious problem with this is
I can't print from my machine, but as lpd also listens to sockets and
spawns children I'm wondering if the problems are related.  Ping and telnet
seem to work fine.  Rlogin as anyone but root gives 'rcmd: socket: permission
denied".  Running netstat core dumps.  I can mount remote filesystems fine.

Well, after receiving my copy of the 5/16 "PC Leak" *today* (3 days after the
rest of the world), I have to agree with David.  The first thing I noticed
that sounds VERY suspecious is the blurb at tge bottom of the box on the
front page, entitled "Corsair revs for takeoff".  The blurbs states that:

   "The operating system will run on Intel, PowerPC, and other RISC
    microprocessors and will be priced at $99 per copy."

If this "Corsair" products is real, and is based upon the Linux kernel at all,
we all know that Linus himself says that it would be virtually impossible,
or at least very difficult, to port the Linux kernel to another processor.

Now, if what Novell is doing is writing a GUI (i.e. a custom X window
manager), and adding a few apps to Linux (like a DOS/Windows Merge product),
then the quoted statement *could* be possible.  For the PowerPC and RISC
markets, they would simply sell a software package that installed and ran
using the processors native flavor of Unix.  But that would imply that
Corsair is an application/utility suite, and NOT an operating system.

No, I had elm display French characters correctly by just setting LC_CTYPE,
but the correct value is "ISO-8859-1" (case-sensitive), and you have to
ensure that your libs were compiled with "__linux__" defined (I had to add
it to /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/2.5.8/specs -- is this normal ?)

Rochkind writes in _Advanced Unix Programming_ that (p 209):

   SIGHUP (1) HANGUP. Sent when a terminal is hung up to every process
              for which it is the control terminal.  Also sent to each
              process in a process group when the group leader terminates
              for any reason.  This simulates hanging up on terminals that 
              can't be physically hung up, such as a personal computer.

Perhaps your apps have created their own process groups without a controlling
terminal?
