Subject: XLIB: Odd Problem With XGetWindowProperty
Date: Sat, 14 May 1994 03:36:10 GMT

Here is an odd problem that I'm having. I can create an window property
with XInternAtom and XChangeProperty. If I run xprop, it will show that
the property has been created with the correct value. But when I try to
retrieve the property (which is an interger set to 0) I am returned a
value of 32K something. I've followed every example I could find, and
I've read through the docs as well. I'm afraid I can't see the problem.
I'm hoping that some of you can. =)

Subject: Digiboard Dumb 8 port serial board
Date: Sat, 14 May 1994 05:13:12 GMT

I have come across a Digiboard 8 port serial card, which I would
like to get going with Linux. Unfortunately I don't even know
the model as I just have the card and no documentation.

I would like to know if anyone has successfully used one of these
boards, and what is necessary to do so, but I would be grateful
for *any* information about this board, even the model.

It is an eight bit, full length board, with an octopus connector.
There are eight 40 pin (socketed) UARTs in two rows down the middle
of the card, and a row of 9 separate DIP switch packs along the
bottom of the card. I assume that 8 of the DIP switches are
relevant for each port and the last is for overall configuration.

Thanks.

Why don't you ask Zeos to install Linux for you? Try calling Greg Herrick,
the president of Zeos International LTD at (612) 623-9614 during normal
business hours. You probably won't get Greg Herrick but you may get to
talk to a vice president in marketing who can decide whether or not Zeos
should install Linux on the machines that they sell if the customers asks
them to do so. Like Zeos, most mail order computer vendors have never
heard of Linux and have no idea what kind of market there might be for
mail order Linux workstations. They just might decide to install Linux
if enough customers tell them that they should. Good Luck, Bob Tisdale.

Well, thanx for the hint. But some prefer to use the 1.0.x series to
be on the safe way and it doesn't help to know that this is fixed
in a development kernel.

Nope, your standard CD is read only. There are mastering stations available
in the vicinity of $2,500 - $4,000. (Not a bad price if your in a position
where you need archival capability for a large amount of data over a fairly
long period of time). Or if you have a need to create a master for later
mass reproduction.

There is nothing stopping anyone writing a kernel or usermode appletalk handler
for Linux. The kernel has all the code needed to write it in user mode, or you
could build it in the kernel as a protocol layer like IP, IPX or AX.25. Since
appletalk is relatively simple its a viable job for someone with the specs
and plenty of time.

Date: 16 May 1994 18:47:18 GMT

Hi Linux Gurus:

We are trying to set up a Pentium based system running Linux to do
some image processing applications. We want to have the following
SCSI devices to work with the hardware/Linux platform :

        1/2" tape drive
        Color Printer (preferably disublimation)
        CD Writable disk drives
        Floptical/Magneto optical disk drives

Now my question is , are these devices supported by Linux. If so,
what SCSI boards should we use and what makes/models of these devices
are supported (i.e. have device drivers).

Any suggestion would be welcome. Please mail all your responses directly
to me, since I don't read this newsgroup regularly.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Announcement] LOADLIN v1.4 for DOS
Date: 16 May 1994 18:34:20 GMT

Crossposted to c.o.l.{development,admin,help,misc}

Announcing Version 1.4 of the LOADLIN Linux Boot Utility for DOS !

  (c) Hans Lermen lermen@elserv.ffm.fgan.de

LOADLIN is a DOS-based utility which allows you to boot Linux from:

     1) A DOS comand line

     2) A DOS batch file

     3) The DOS CONFIG.SYS menu facility

LOADLIN eliminates some of the dangers of using LILO, especially for
those new users who have not mastered the intricacies of LILO's
configuration. Your DOS Master Boot Record is not modified in any way.

The LOADLIN package also supports the booting of a UMSDOS system by
providing automatic translation of DOS drive names to Linux device files.

LOADLIN is a follow-on to F.Coutant's BOOTLIN utility. It fully
supports the command line parameters feature of Linux kernels
(revision 0.99pl15 and later). This includes the ability to pass
environment variables to Linux which can then be examined by your
bootup "rc" scripts, to customize the bootup behaviour of Linux.
Boot-time parameters can also be passed to several Linux drivers.

LOADLIN has been enhanced to work with most DOS extended-memory
managers. The UMSDOS translation feature works with any type of
boot disk which is accessible via BIOS INT13 (for example, IDE and
SCSI disks which are accessed directly via BIOS).

The LOADLIN package includes full source code and documentation.

LOADLIN Version 1.4 will be available by ftp from sunsite.unc.edu
in the file pub/Linux/system/Linux-boot/lodln14.tgz just as soon
as it is moved from the Incoming directory.

From: wos@dcs.warwick.ac.uk (William O Smith)
Subject: Two suggestions that might speed up Linux.
Date: Mon, 16 May 1994 15:16:44 GMT

Suggestion 1: Compressed buffers. On fast machines, if there is idle
time, and spare buffer space, how about compressing the
disk buffers, storing both versions (compressed and un-
compressed) until memory gets tight, then just keeping
the compressed version (if it saves much space). Presumably
if the machine becomes fast enough, decompressing memory
should be faster than loading off disk.

Suggestion 2: Some kind of intelligent read ahead. Have ll_rw_block.c
keep a record of all blocks read (and written?) and the
times they were read/written. Keep this accessible in a file
such as /proc/buflog. Write a program that takes this
and creates another (proper, physical) file, which contains
intelligent read-ahead information. This is then read on
the next boot (before?) and if the system has enough memory,
it can read ahead at the right times. Could be especially
useful during kernel compiles -- read in the next source file
whilst the current one is being compiled.

Just ideas. Please explain why they won't work. Ta.

Subject: Re: 1.0.9 kernel bug (+ partial fix): when using non-loopback address to send to localhost, "from" address should also be non-loopback.
Date: Mon, 16 May 1994 20:05:02 GMT

In article <1994May16.162353.23512@uk.ac.swan.pyr>, iiitac@uk.ac.swan.pyr (Alan Cox) says:
+---------------
| I didn't say upgrade to 1.1.8 - I said fixed as of 1.1.8. I know the difference
+------------->8

But that says nothing about the "stability" releases...
