2 Pre-Built Standard Miniloader Images.

Contents of this section

If you are planning to run Linux on a standard Alpha based system, then there are pre-built "standard" Miniloader images that you might use. These (along with the sources and other interesting stuff) can be found on gatekeeper.dec.com in pub/Digital/Linux-Alpha/Miniloader.

The images subdirectory contains a directory per standard system with images having the following naming convention:

  1. mini - standard non-BIOS Miniloader image including block device drivers,
  2. mini.bios - as mini but with BIOS emulation,
  3. mini.floppy - as mini above but this only contains a floppy driver,
  4. mini.floppy.bios - as mini.bios above but this only contains a floppy driver,
  5. updateflash.gz - update flash utility which will flash the standard Miniloader image,
  6. updateflash.bios.gz - update flash utility which will flash the BIOS emulation version of the Miniloader,
  7. files with the suffix .dd are full floppy disk images of boot block floppies.

The mini.floppy images are particularly useful when first powering up a non-standard system, for example to test a different SCSI driver. You could use this Miniloader image to load Linux and see that the device drivers work correctly before embedding those drivers into Miniloader.
