Welcome to Linux/Alpha!
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Linux/Alpha can be found
in this FAQ.
This site is under construction, but for now, here is a list of
ftp sites that may be of interest:
-
ftp://ftp.cs.helsinki.fi/pub/Software/Linux/Kernel:
- Latest Linux kernels.
-
ftp://ftp.azstarnet.com/pub/linux/axp:
- Latest PCI Alpha system specific kernel patches (Noname and
Cabriolet in particular). Various
other tools and toys (e.g., Emacs-19, ghostview, aboot-x.y,
SVGATextMode, libc, Maelstrom, binutils and more). The Linux/Alpha FAQ is also
available in a variety of formats in subdirectory
docs.
-
ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Linux-Alpha:
- User-level build-environment and lots of user-level tools.
The first full-blown, end-user-installable Linux/Alpha
distribution is available here as well. It can be found in
subdirectory
BLADE_0.2. This is a self-contained
distribution that is based on a modified 1.2 kernel.
-
ftp://grocne.enc.org/pub/alpha:
- A rather complete port of libc and more user-level tools.
The library is in subdirectory libc-x.y.zz. Also features,
the gcc, g++, libg++ and more. However, this site hasn't been
updated in a while, so to make sure you get the latest version,
be sure to check the StarNet
site first. In particular the latest version of libc is now on
that site.
The tools and binaries on this site should work with the
latest kernel releases (1.3.3 or newer). If you want to run
the bleeding edge releases of the kernel etc., start by installing
BLADE-0.2, then download the binaries on this server and install them
on top of BLADE (due to changes in the directory-reading
interface in the kernel, you won't be able to use utilities
such as "ls" with 1.3.x kernels)---you may want to make sure
you keep a backup copy of the BLADE binaries in case disaster
strikes.
