Changes from 1.1.59 to 1.1.60

These changes are archived on ftp.crynwr.com:pub/kchanges and http://www.crynwr.com/kchanges. I cannot answer questions about Linux -- I merely summarize the kernel patches after reading them. I try to make them useful to everyone, but kernel hackers should take them with a grain of salt and read the patches themselves. The patch file is patch60.gz

• Updated CREDITS
• Added Adaptec AHA274X/284X and UltraStor 14F/34F to config.in turned off by default.
• cdu31a driver no longer supports DMA because it's too slow.
• cdu31a can read 2048 bytes (more efficient, but cannot execute files off cd), will support XA disks, will treat multi-session disks as if partitioned, and supports reading of raw audio tracks.
• Changes to serial driver:
  • serial.c (rs_ioctl, get_lsr_info): Added patch suggested by Arne Riiber so that user mode programs can tell when the transmitter shift register is empty.
  • tty_ioctl.c (wait_until_sent): Added debugging printk statements (under the #ifdef TTY_DEBUG_WAIT_UNTL_SENT)
  • serial.c (rs_interrupt, rs_interrupt_single, receive_chars, change_speed, rs_close): rs_close now disables receiver interrupts when closing the serial port. This allows the serial port to close quickly when Linux and a modem (or a mouse) are engaged in an echo war; when closing the serial port, we now first stop listening to incoming characters, and *then* wait for the transmit buffer to drain.

    In order to make this change, the info->read_status_mask is now used to control what bits of the line status register are looked at in the interrupt routine in all cases; previously it was only used in receive_chars to select a few of the status bits.

• Added module capability to msdos and umsdos filesystems.
• Oops, we were allowed to change the owner of our input under any circumstances. A little too liberal (seee 1.1.59).
• Oops, forgot to mark an inode as dirty.
• Allow "conv=m" for file conversion.
• Oops, swapped uid and gid in setting popt structure.
• Use 512 byte blocks instead of 1024 because it fits better with DOS's cluster alignment.
• Remember when we fixed the readdir stuff? Also fix it in sysv filesystem.
• Be more intelligent about what to readahead into the msdos fs's cache.
• umsdos sets the readahead flag as needed.
• umsdos now uses generic mmaping.
• Some DEC Alpha assembly language functions added.
• A whole bunch of ksyms added so that we can use modular filesystems.
• Set the minimum number of free pages dynamically.
• Break the DNS resolver by matching on the IP address too soon.
• If we don't have a gateway, no need to broadcast past it.
• Check for null sockets in sock_wake_async().
