The problem in a nutshell is that locate crashes with a Segmentation Fault when the loacate database is quite large, mine is over 500k. The problem does not occur if you run updatedb --old-format on the same system. The problem also does not occur if I unmount a couple of drives and run updatedb (no flags) again, thus producing a smaller database. I have tried this on 2 systems that have about 2gb of data (news servers) and the both do it "out of the box". My work around has been to patch the /etc/cron.daily/find script to include the --old-format flag for updatedb. I am running:- Debian 0.93R5 kernel 1.2.1 as shipped libc.so.4.6.26 All are fresh installs yesterday. - Ernie. _____________________________________________________________________ EISnet - ernie@tinny.eis.net.au - Brisbane - Australia "I ping, therefore I am." _____________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Message sent: From: iwj10@thor.cam.ac.uk (Ian Jackson) To: Ernie Elu Subject: Bug#702: Acknowledgement (was: locate crash with large db) In-Reply-To: <199504021116.VAA06202@tinny.eis.net.au> References: <199504021116.VAA06202@tinny.eis.net.au> Thank you for the problem report you have sent regarding Debian GNU/Linux. If you wish to submit further information on your problem, please send it to debian-bugs@pixar.com, but please ensure that the Subject line of your message starts with "Bug#702" or "Re: Bug#702" so that we can identify it as relating to the same problem. Please do not reply to the address at the top of this message, unless you wish to report a problem with the bug-tracking system. Your message didn't have a Package: line at the start (in the pseudo-header following the real mail header), or didn't have a psuedo-header at all. This makes it much harder for us to categorise and deal with your problem report; please ensure that you say which package(s) and version(s) the problem is with next time. Some time in the future the problem reports system may start rejecting such messages.
