The only way to get control back is to hit Control-Z, issue a 'kill' from the shell on the 'mail' command and try again. I have never seen these commands hang like this in any other context, so I believe it is 'mail' which is hung. I am using Debian 0.93 R5, Linux v. 1.2.11 and libc 4.6.27.
