You might want to check the SCSI howto for comments about adaptec 1542{bc} interfaces. There's a lot of caveats, and a recommendation for changing the scsi driver so that it'll only have one request outstanding (changing a #define). I had this problem with my 1542c for kernels ranging from 0.99.14 or so up to 1.0.something -- needed a power-cycle to restore sanity. It went away with one of the 1.x kernels, and now might be back with the 1.2.10 kernel, from what you say. I went round and round between Drew Eckhart (I think), who did the scsi driver, and Adaptec on this. No resolution. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Message sent: From: iwj10@thor.cam.ac.uk (Ian Jackson) To: mitchell@mdd.comm.mot.com (Bill Mitchell) Subject: Bug#1020: Info received (was Bug#1020: kernel image hangs scsi controller) In-Reply-To: <9506202026.AA17023@bb29c.mdd.comm.mot.com> References: <9506202026.AA17023@bb29c.mdd.comm.mot.com> Thank you for the additional information you have supplied regarding this problem report. There doesn't appear to be anything relevant (to this problem) in the HOWTO anymore. I think the caveats were taken care of long ago. > I had this problem with my 1542c for kernels ranging from 0.99.14 or > so up to 1.0.something -- needed a power-cycle to restore sanity. > It went away with one of the 1.x kernels, and now might be back with > the 1.2.10 kernel, from what you say. I suspect a conflict with another driver that Ian M. has compiled into the debian kernel. Unfortunately, I don't know what drivers he selected since he has not released the source package. > I went round and round between Drew Eckhart (I think), who did the > scsi driver, and Adaptec on this. No resolution. Yeah, I remember you mentioning that before on the debian mailing list. If I'm not mistaken, all the problems were related to the 1542c, not the 1542b. The 1542b has always been pretty solid with Linux. --Mike ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Message sent: From: iwj10@thor.cam.ac.uk (Ian Jackson) To: deisher@yamuna.eas.asu.edu (Michael E. I think I've narrowed the problem down to a kernel autoprobe conflict. When my machine failed to boot the message was: BusLogic SCSI: buslogic_out: failed(4): BusLogic SCSI: buslogic_stat: status=39 intrflags=84 BusLogic SCSI: buslogic_mailboxes: failed setting up mailboxes. aha1542_in failed(3): Unable to determine Adaptec DMA priority. Disabling board. I got a copy of source-1.2.10-1.deb and tried compiling it without the buslogic driver. The source tree is messed up and it would not compile. I'll report this bug separately. Finally, I got a fresh copy of the 1.2.10 kernel source and copied the .config file from source-1.2.10-1.deb. I used all of the default options (the one's Ian had set) except the buslogic driver option. It compiled with no problems. I installed the new kernel by copying it to /boot/vmlinuz-1.2.10 on my debian partition. Now the debian system boots and runs just fine. Should we report this one to the kernel channel? Can we make a separate kernel package that avoids this conflict? --Mike ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Message sent: From: iwj10@thor.cam.ac.uk (Ian Jackson) To: deisher@yamuna.eas.asu.edu (Michael E. Can we make a >separate kernel package that avoids this conflict? Mike, Actually, I have a Buslogic board. I know that in a very recent 1.2 revision, 6 I think it was or something, Buslogic patches were applied that solved alot of my problems. I have heard on Usenet this bad board-identification problem before. It's not particular to just us. As for the fix, I don't know. Ideally a 1.2.11 would be released, but most of those kids (figuratively of course) are off to the races with 1.3.x. I guess the question is how many debian people have Buslogic boards? I DO. I may be the only one. I am sure (my speculation) that more people have Adaptec than Buslogic (unfortunately, Buslogic is better quality and suppurt, IMHO). THIS RAISES THE ISSUE OF WHO OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS again. Just thought I would mention that last part again for the hell of it. Regards, -- -- Grant R. I have a feeling that most (if not all) the Debian developers share this opinion. I'm sure they'll tell me if they don't. :-) The proper question to ask is "how do we support conflicting drivers in a relatively painless way?" --Mike ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Message sent: From: iwj10@thor.cam.ac.uk (Ian Jackson) To: deisher@yamuna.eas.asu.edu (Michael E. I have a 946C, but haven't had any problems with it through all of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x kernels. All kernels were compiled by me using the standard, Debian gcc-2.6.3 and libc-4.6.27. All kernels were compiled by me using the >standard, Debian gcc-2.6.3 and libc-4.6.27. FYI and for the purpose of documenting the things I went through that may help others... I have a BusLogic 545C, and somewhere between 1.2.3 and 1.2.9 the changes were made. I looked at the 1.2.10 patch, bug couldn't find any Buslogic modifications. Before I made this particular upgrade jump, I was getting the errors of the following nature: >May 31 22:24:28 lucubrate kernel: BusLogic SCSI: buslogic_interrupt: >interrupt received, but no mail. >Jun 1 02:28:04 lucubrate kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : >pid 19230, scsi0, id 3, lun 0 0x0a 04 e8 0e 02 00 >Jun 1 02:28:04 lucubrate kernel: BusLogic SCSI: buslogic_abort: 10 81 >Jun 1 02:28:04 lucubrate kernel: BusLogic SCSI: buslogic_abort: lost >interrupt discovered on irq 11 - attempting to recover... The first message would appear all the time, and sometimes multiple times so klogd said "previous message twice." Here's what Buslogic tech support had to say about it via e-mail to techsup@buslogic.com (with a quick response I might add): >First off, I'd suggest you use a newer Linux kernel than 1.2.3 -- version >1.2.6 contains the first of a number of interrupt handler rewrites to take >care of some of the problems you're describing. 1.2.9 also appears to be >stable, and I know of one person who's running multiple BusLogic adapters on >it with no problems. > >Regards, >Jo Kellner >BusLogic Technical Support I hope this helps someone else or may shed some light on the present situation...
