Byron- the accelerated cards *should* drive a greyscale monitor
just fine. They have an analog signal input don't they?
I think your $115 for a good greyscale monitor is probably
way out of line, but I have never really priced them.
When cost and XFree performance are desired, I don't see any
substitute for the S3-80x cards. You can get them for sub-$150,
and they are screamers at 1024x768ni and under - usually I say
"256 colors", this time I can say "256 greys" :-)
16-greys might be more RAM efficient, but the accelerator chips
either are not built for it, or at least XFree chooses not to
spend time supporting those modes. What the heck, waste those bits!

LGX Linux CD will run from the CD-ROM , only requiring 2M of your HD
's space for the kernal and boot option files...
As you say it will boot very very slowly, and loading a new
application takse a long time. You can get it from YGGDRASIL, however
I would wait until they released the Winter 93 release. I know its 94,
but as with most projects, its been delayed....

Do you connect via modem or SLIP to a remote UN*X system? Tired of
saving files, downloading them, and *then* printing them? Don't have a
decent printer logging facility in your comm program? Don't like
seeing all those nasty control codes in your printed ouput?

DO YOU JUST WANT A BETTER WAY TO PRINT FILES FROM YOUR HOST TO YOUR
PRINTER AT HOME WITH A SINGLE COMMAND?

Well, then vtprint-1.21.tar.gz is for you! This nifty little program
allows you to print files to your remote printer using terminal escapes
sequences supported by most major VT100/ANSI/VT220 terminal emulators.

It functions as a drop in replacement for lpr where the printer is not
serviceable by lpd.

The actual archive (vtprint-1.21.tar.gz) is located at netcom.com in the
/pub/garrett anonymous ftp directory. The archive contains source and
complete documentation, including man pages. Binaries may be made
available in a seperate archive if I get enough requests. The file is
gzipped, and the uncompressed tar file should be untarred inside a
source directory, e.g. /usr/src.

-- IF YOU USE X11 AT HOME -- and want the functionality of vtprint,
please get the patches for rxvt or the patched source tree from the same
archive directory on netcom.com (read INDEX for exact filename). Rxvt
is a low-resource-using clone of xterm, and my patches give it the
ability to work with vtprint. XTERM DOES NOT SUPPORT THE NECESSARY
ESCAPE SEQUENCES TO WORK WITH VTPRINT! Besides which, unless you have a
high-end workstation at home, you will probably benefit from using a
terminal emulator that uses *much* less memory than xterm. :^)

IF YOU USE A PREVIOUS VERSION OF VTPRINT -- please get this newer
version. It fixes some bugs and adds significant new functionality over
previous releases. The full details are in the CHANGES file in the
archive.

VTPRINT IS FREELY REDISTRIBUTABLE/MODIFIABLE/USABLE, AS LONG AS MY
COPYRIGHT NOTICES ARE KEPT INTACT. The full licensing details are given
in the documentation that is included in the archive.

Thanks, and happy vtprinting!

Not quite right. If ghostscript is linked with X11 libs then u have
either to compile it without X11 or get the X11 libs.
Try ftp.cdrom.com:/pub/linux/lokal (not quite shure about the path)
or ws105.zfn.uni-bremen.de:/pub/ (mget doesn't work here :( )
get the svgapatch for ghostscript and compile gs2.6.1.

I really don't think he was flaming SLS, and Peter's name wasn't even
mentioned!

Sheesh - will *you* please stop flaming!

on another note :- hooray for 1.0.0. I doubt it will stop Linux
development (which is a Good Thing (tm)).

Neither do I, the sources compile just fine.

The UUCP Info pages document Taylor format very well. But this is a moot
point, ( see below)

Taylor UUCP can be compiled to use either HDB or Taylor at runtime. This is
what I have mine set up as. First I started with the same old HDB config
files I always had, and then as I wanted to use the new features or Taylor
(Like canceling dialing if the line is BUSY instead of waiting 30 secs for
timeout) I converted the files one by one to Taylor after I understood them..
It works with some files as Taylor and some as HDB. Why didn't you compile
it with both enabled???

I have had nothing but problems with the package you put together for
SLS1.01, no docs, no sample config files nothing. With the source I could
just read the docs and make a Taylor config file, you expect me to go out and
buy a book on UUCP just so I can set up my sys files.. I don't think so.

I would discourage anyone from using ANY UUCP binaries. Since they all seem
to be configured so badly.

This is the problem with most of Linux, people who know nothing (not you
Vince, other people) make changes to the source, compile it and put binaries
on one of the ftp sites(without any docs), and then people blame the author
when they don't work.

Running Linux .99p14 Free Unix for i386/i486/Pentium machines. Ask me how.
