Welcome to OmniPing Professional!
Contents:
Tabs and Overview:
OmniPing uses a friendly and intuitive "Tabbed" user interface. Following is a list of the tabs and their general purpose:
Ping - The main
tab. Controls pinging, allows the user to save a result set
(run) to the database.
Options - Enables
the user to set default timeout, packet size, and other options,
if desired.
Database - Allows
access to the OmniPing Database. Saved runs, reporting,
scheduling unattended OmniPing runs.
About - General
information, local computer network info, contacting Manatee
Software.
Pinging:
When
OmniPing opens, simply enter the range of IP addresses that you
would like to check, or use the default 1-254, and click on the
"Ping" button. OmniPing will then begin pinging the range
of IP addresses specified. IP addresses that return pings
will be listed in the box on the Ping tab, along with round trip
times. The
default timeout is 3000 milliseconds. The timeout, as well as the data packet size, can be
changed in the Options tab.
Note - OmniPing uses
"Blocking Calls," which, while making the process more reliable, make user
interruption once the pinging has begun slow on
some systems. If this response is slow on your system, note that
clicking the Cancel button once will stop OmniPing
eventually.
Reports:
OmniPing provides a formatted report that can be run against saved OmniPing runs in the database. The report will compare all IP addresses in the saved runs to generate a list of used and free IP addresses.
In the report, used IP addresses are those that have returned a ping at least once in any number of saved runs. Free IP addresses are those that have never returned a ping.
To preview a report:
To restart tracking a run from scratch, simply delete the run in the Database tab, and start saving runs again.
Scheduling:
OmniPing allows the
scheduling of unattended runs. During a scheduled run, all
user input (warnings, errors) that may appear are bypassed.
Please verify the result set after a scheduled run to make sure
that it is valid. The next scheduled run is always
displayed in the bottom right corner of the OmniPing window.
Note - OmniPing must be
running - open and ready - for a scheduled run to start at the
scheduled time.
To create a new schedule:
The Schedule window will appear. Note the IP address for the run at the top.
To Delete a schedule:
Note - if, when OmniPing is launched, an outdated schedule exists, the schedule will be deleted.
2. What is this thing for, anyway?
OmniPing
was developed for network administrators and engineers for the purpose of network analysis and,
in particular, IP
address tracking, recovery, and assignment.
OmniPing can be used to
verify which machines are running on a network, to find unused IP addresses
from machines that are no longer around, or to
help in organization and planning of network
restructuring.
Software
and Operating System:
OmniPing is a 32 bit
application, and has been tested in Windows 95 and NT 4. The proprietary
TCP/IP stack that comes with these operating
systems is required.
Note: Win95
users may have to upgrade to WinSock 2 in order to use OmniPing. (If you do,
OmniPing will tell you.) This upgrade is
free from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com, or from various places on the web. If you have
trouble finding it, drop us a note, and we will
point you to it. Windows NT 4.x users need not be concerned with this.
Hardware:
Any Intel based machine
that will run Windows 95 or NT 4.x should run OmniPing without any problem. A
Network card or Dial
Up network connection is required in order to Ping.
