In addition to having one of the most interesting booths at the CES, complete with a soft drink bar and large framed paintings of their favorite properties, Virgin Interactive had a large selection of new games that crossed almost every concievable format. To start with, the Disney version of Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book has been transformed into a fine looking platform game similar to Aladdin. Mowgli swings through the jungle encountering friends and enemies from the film including Baloo and Shere Khan. This game may serve as a good reminder to younger players that these characters did not originate with Tale Spin. It should be available for the SNES and Sega Genesisas you read this. To no one's surprise, the latest animated film from the Walt Disney Company, The Lion King, is also being made into a video game. The player takes the role of Simba,a lion cub with an important destiny. Since the character is not human, it takes a while to get used to the feline interface. This is an important part of the game as Simba grows in skill along with the player. Simba also grows in size. In later phases of play, the character is a full grown lion, ready to take the throne from his evil and incompetent Uncle Scar. The Lion King will be released in the Fall for the SNES and Sega Genesis, just in time for the holiday buying season! On a different side of hot film properties, action fans will be drooling over the Sega CD version of last year's Demolition Man. It features several different styles of gameplay within the same game, including a side-scrolling platform, an overhead-scrolling shooter and bungee jumping! This fast-moving game will be released in late '94, followed by SNES and Genesis versions in early '95. Demolition Man for the 3DO is not just another version of the above, but a completely different animal. It will include numerous scenes from the film, and special attention has been given to the transition from film to game action to make it as smooth as possible. The gameplay elements involved include a side-view kick/punch fighting game, a Doom-style maze race and a driving game. The finished product will probably blow every other 3DO title completely out of the water, and should be available in September or October. The popular Dune novels by Frank Herbert have already been translated into PC games. Virgin will be releasing the strategy game Dune 2 for the Genesis this fall. The more adventure oriented Dune 1 will be released on Sega CD. (Both products will simply be entitled "Dune", however). Lost Eden uses an engine similar to Dune. The basic idea of this strategy /adventure game is that Adam, the king's son, must find out the secret of the Builders with his dinosaur buddies. Yes, dinosaurs and humans are living side by side, just like in Jurassic Park. You can look for Lost Eden around the holiday season. Command and Conquer uses the Dune 2 strategy engine, enhanced with an original storyline and hot-looking graphics rendered in 3D Studio. The game dares to ask the unusual question, what if the balance of power suddenly shifted to the Third World countries? A strange meteor hits the earth in the near future, creating a powerful new energy source, the mineral tiberium. But it's only available in strange places like Cambodia. The game is fully rendered in 3D Studio, and also uses live-action video. It will probably be available in early 1995. Trivial Pursuit is one of the most popular board games of all time, and Virgin has acquired the rights to create versions of it for several home entertainment platforms through an agreement with Parker Bros. They are planning to release versions for the Sega CD, PC and Macintosh CDs, and possibly the 3DO. The only major difference between using this program and playing the board game with your friends is that the replies are multiple-choice and may be in a format other than text, like pictures or music. The CD also includes animated cut scenes starring the creators of the game. Trivial Pursuit will be available in September or October, to be closely followed by another Parker Brothers classic, Clue. The popular PC golf game Links will soon be available for play on the Sega CD. It is pretty much an exact replica of play on the Torrey Pines course with minimal change on the interface. The Sega CD version should be available in late August or early September. The third installment in the Kyrandia series, Malcolm's Revenge, has Malcolm, the villain from Kyrandia 1 returning (to life, that is) and trying to clear his name. While the graphics are very much in the mode of the first two Kyrandia games, they have much more of a 3D aspect, and are more fully rendered. This game is scheduled for a Christmas release. Lands of Lore 2 also promises to be a visual feast of an adventure game, complete with demons and dragons fully rendered in 3-D studio. Virgin was keeping mum about the exact details of the plot, but the game is scheduled for release in early 1995. Mech Commander will be a robot sim for CD-ROM along the lines of the Battletech game. The player controls a huge battle robot that plods over the terrain of near-future Earth trying to restore the political balance and blow the bejeebers out of the badguys. As you progress in the game you can improve your armaments and armor, and become even more dangerous. Mech Commander uses 3D bit map action and texture mapping, in addition to more than twenty minutes of stop-motion model animation! There's even a chance to blast the heck out of your friends in modem play. This monster will plod your way in the Fall. Speaking of monsters, Creature Shock is a first person perspective shoot 'em up with some nicely rendered disgusting things to shoot at. True, there's also spaceflight levels and a pretense of a storyline, but the real attraction here is the big gray, nasty things lunging at you. Creature Shock will be available in November. Get your BFG ready! Helicopter Aquatic Warfare Command, or HAWC, is billed as one of the most realistic helicopter flight sims yet. The player is in charge of a band of mercenaries hired to wipe out a ring of pirates that wreak daily havoc on the Singapore Strait. The player controls six attack 'copters and must make the South China Sea safe for commerce once again. Take note: this flight sim is based on something other than a military plot line! That's as rare as fashion sense in the '70's. HAWC will be compatible with the Thrustmaster control systems, and should be available before the end of the summer.
