Nintendo is by far the epitome of the big presenter at the CES show. Their booth covered almost a quarter of the floor. They had a dome full of retail stuff that was really quite uninteresting, a furry Donkey Kong running around hugging children, and ever so often some stray attractive women, a huge erupting volcano with flying condors, and then their usual assortment of licensees that just happen to be in their booth. It's companies like Nintendo that make the CES what it is. Nintendo has long been known for their cute and cuddly characters, Mario, Koopa, Donkey Kong, you know the crew. A while back, they released Super Mario Kart. It wasn't a smash hit, but it was one of the best two player games ever to be made, and one of the first Nintendo titles to include the FX chip. Officially, Stunt Trax FX is not a sequel, but for all of those eager Mario Kart fans, it will have to do. This game has gone through so many name changes I wasn't quite sure what to call it, but the name on the machines being played at the CES was Stunt Trax FX, so that's what we'll call it. Stunt Trax FX has four unique Trax's: Stunt Trax, Time Trax, Battle Trax, and the Road Race which has 12 levels. For race fans and Mario Kart fans alike, Stunt Trax FX should be a great game. Baseball games come and go, as do most of the current baseball stars. The latest license of Nintendo's is Ken Griffey Jr. As most baseball fans know, Griffey could be on his way to beating the home run record set by the great Babe Ruth. With real teams and logos, and an actual playoff structure, Ken Greey Jr. Baseball should be a baseball fans dream come true. Donkey Kong Country is Nintendo's flagship for the second half of '94. Featuring their new graphic abilities aided by Silicon Graphics, Donkey Kong Country is full of beautifully rendered scenes with light source shading. The player plays Donkey Kong, and guides him through many levels of danger with the help of his sidekick, Diddy Dong. Uniracers is a simple racing game with 16 different unicycles to race with, and more than 6,000 frames of animation. Uniracers is also a two player simultaneous game with the option of a tournament mode for group play. Nintendo also had several SGI work stations strategically placed in the center of their booth, showing off their new tools for creating incredible graphics for both their 16 bit system and their new Ultra 64 (formerly known by its code name, Project Reality). I might also mention that there was an Ultra 64 unveiling off the show floor that was by invitation only. Nintendo was showing Cruisin USA and Killer Instinct, both coin-op titles do to be released in the fall of this year. By the looks of the two arcade games, Ultra 64 is real, and fantastic. Look for the home system to be here around fall of '95.
