      STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
                    CANNOT MOUNT MULTIPLE STACKER DRIVES
                          (Applies to Stacker 4.0)

      BACKGROUND

Stacker drives may not be mounting because the STACVOL files
containing the compressed data are too fragmented on the disk.
Change the load order of the STACVOL files or reduce their
fragmentation in order to mount them.

Stacker's driver can tolerate a certain amount of fragmentation
in the STACVOL file. The default setting is 32 fragments. Note:
if there are more than 640 fragments, the drive cannot be
mounted. If the first drive mounted has more than the default of
32, the Stacker driver tries to reset to accept the additional
fragmentation. If the additional STACVOL files specified in the
STACKER.INI file have a fragmentation level higher than the first
mounted volume, Stacker will again try to adjust the allowed
fragmentation level upwards to accept the volume. There may not
be enough room for this readjustment and the volume will fail to
      mount.

      SOLUTION

Determine the amount of fragmentation of the STACVOL files.
Adjust the order to mount the STACVOL files.
Defragment the physical drive, including the STACVOL files.

Determine the amount of fragmentation of the STACVOL files

       1. Start your system without Stacker. Start your system from
the hard disk and right after the diagnostic beep, press and
hold the CTRL-ALT-SHIFT key combination. If your timing is
right you will receive a Stacker message "Press Escape to
cancel installation...". Press ESC to bypass Stacker. If you
are using DOS 6 but are not preloading Stacker, press the F5
key when you see the message "Starting XX-DOS...". For other
DOS versions, a plain boot disk is the preferred method of
           restarting your system.
       2. At the root directory of each of your physical partitions
type DIR /AH. This will display the hidden files. Locate the
STACVOL files, noting the drive they are on and their
spelling. (If your version of DOS does not support use of
the /AH switch you must use a third party utility to view
           hidden files.)
       3. Unhide all of the STACVOL files. Use the DOS ATTRIB command,
or the Stacker SATTRIB command. The syntax of the two
commands is the same. For example, if you wish to use
SATTRIB to unhide a file called STACVOL.DSK that is on drive
C, insert Stacker Disk # 2 into its drive, go to that drive
           and type:
           SATTRIB -S -H -R C:\STACVOL.DSK <enter>
Do this for each STACVOL file.
       4. Run CHKDSK against each STACVOL file. For example, type:
           CHKDSK C:\STACVOL.DSK
       5. Note the number of fragments in each STACVOL file. This is
reported after the disk and memory statistics something like
           this:
           C:\STACVOL.DSK Contains 15 non-contiguous blocks
The number of non-contiguous blocks is the number of
           fragments for that file.

Adjust the order to mount the STACVOL files

       1. If any of the STACVOL files contain more than 640 fragments,
go to the next section. Adjusting the loading order will not
           help.
       2. Write down the STACVOL files in order of fragmentation, with
the most fragmented file first. Remember to include the
drive letter associated with each file.
       3. Type ED /I <enter>. This will bring up the STACKER.INI in an
           editor.
       4. Note the lines which display and mount the STACVOL files.
Rearrange these files in the order that you wrote down. Be
sure you keep the same syntax of each line.
       5. Press CTRL-Z to save the file. Restart your system. If the
problem persists, proceed to the next section.

Defragment the physical drive, including the STACVOL files

       1. Boot the system without Stacker. See the first section for
           instructions.
       2. Unhide all of the STACVOL files just as you did in the first
           section.
       3. Also unhide any other files on the drive except the boot
files such as IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS.
       4. Defragment the physical drive. Use a utility such as
Norton's SPEEDISK, PC Tools' COMPRESS, or DOS 6's DEFRAG.
Note that DEFRAG is on DOS Setup Disk 1.
       5. Restart your system. The reduced fragmentation of the
STACVOL files should allow all drives to mount successfully.
If the problem persists, follow the steps in the first two
sections. Now that fragmentation has been significantly
reduced, changing the load order of the STACVOL files should
           be effective.
