      STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
                             OPTIMIZER ERROR 177
(Applies to Stacker 4.0 for Window & DOS)
      STAC FAX 4612 (11-01-1994)
      -----------------------------------------------------------------

      BACKGROUND

Optimizer error 177 indicates that the Optimizer has found an
earlier version of the Stacker device driver than it expects.
This may occur if you update your Stacker files using S4UP.EXE,
then later run REDBL from your original Stacker disk. S4UP.EXE
provides the Stacker update file SUPDATE.EXE. This file updates a
number of Stacker files on your system, including the Optimizer
and the Stacker driver. If you later run the REDBL program from
Stacker disk # 1, it replaces the Stacker driver on the hard
drive with the version that is on the floppy disk. The Optimizer
detects the older driver and refuses to run.

      SOLUTION

Restore the new Stacker driver and rerun the Optimizer.

       1. Change to the STACKER directory.
       2. Locate the file SUPDATE.EXE. Ensure that it is still
present. If not, copy it from wherever you have stored it to
the STACKER directory. If you have deleted the file, run
S4UP.EXE again from the STACKER directory.
       3. Run SUPDATE.EXE from the STACKER directory. This will update
           the Stacker driver.
       4. Restart the system for the update to take effect. You may
           now run the Optimizer.
