      BACKGROUND

STACKER.EXE is the Stacker Anywhere device driver used to mount a
compressed removable disk such as a floppy or Bernoulli. It is
normally used on a system which is not running Stacker. If you
mount a compressed removable disk on a Stacker system, you
normally use Automounting. See StacFax 4511 or the Stacker User's
Guide for details on Automounting. If you run STACKER.EXE rather
than the Stacker driver which is loaded into memory during the
boot process, there are certain issues concerning the Stacker
utilities, passwords and memory that you should understand. This
      document discusses those issues.

      ISSUES

Mounting a removable disk from the command line.
          Memory usage of STACKER.EXE.
          STACKER.EXE and Passwords.
          The Stacker Utilities.

Mounting a removable disk from the command line

       1. To mount a disk and load STACKER.EXE, insert the compressed
removable disk into its drive, go to that drive, and type
           STACKER <enter>.
       2. To mount a removable compressed disk on a Stacker system,
change to the STACKER directory and type: STACKER drive:
<enter> where drive: is the letter of the removable drive.
Note that this method of mounting does not use STACKER.EXE.
Therefore the limitations of STACKER.EXE listed below do not
           apply.

      Memory usage of STACKER.EXE

The Stacker device driver that is loaded during the startup
process on a Stacker system uses sophisticated memory management
techniques. These techniques reduce the size of the Stacker
device driver in memory. See StacFax 4517 for details on the size
of the Stacker device driver. Because STACKER.EXE is designed to
be transportable to systems without Stacker, these advanced
techniques cannot be used. Therefore the STACKER.EXE driver takes
about 56 KB of conventional memory. If you load STACKER.EXE from
the command line, or in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, your memory usage
      will increase.
      Password Protected Disks

You cannot mount a password protected disk by using Automount or
from Windows. The only way to gain access to a password protected
removable disk is to mount it from the command line and enter the
password when prompted. You may use either the installed Stacker
device driver on a Stacker system or STACKER.EXE.

       1. If you are running Windows, exit completely.
       2. If you have tried to mount the disk and received the message
that the drive is in pass-through mode, you must unmount it
first. Change to the STACKER directory and type: STACKER
-drive: <enter> where drive: is the letter of the removable
           drive.
       3. To mount the disk type: STACKER drive: <enter> where drive:
is the letter of the removable drive. Enter your password
           when prompted.
       4. In order to mount the disk using Stacker Anywhere instead,
change to the drive where you inserted the removable disk
and type STACKER <enter>. Enter the password when prompted.
       5. Restart Windows if desired.
       6. If you wish to mount a different password protected disk,
you must again exit Windows, mount the disk, and re-enter
           Windows.

      The Stacker Utilities

Stacker comes with various utilities to optimize or repair
Stacker drives. Examples of these utilities are CHECK for repair,
and SDEFRAG for optimizing a drive. If you Automount a compressed
removable disk, the Stacker utilities will work like normal.
However, if you mount a disk using STACKER.EXE, the Stacker
utilities will not work on that disk. The disk will not be
reported as a Stacker drive by any of the following: the Stacker
Toolbox, REPORT, nor by STACKER.COM when displaying the Stacker
drive map. Most utilities, when run against the disk, will report
the error that the disk is "not a Stacker drive...".
