      STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
                   CONVERTING REMOVABLE DOUBLESPACE DISKS
(Applies to Stacker for Windows & DOS 4.0)

      -----------------------------------------------------------------

      BACKGROUND

Stacker's Setup converts only mounted, fixed DoubleSpace drives.
However, Stackers DCONVERT program easily converts a removable
disk, such as a floppy disk, a Bernoulli, or a SyQuest.

The following procedure assumes you've already installed Stacker.

      SOLUTION

For this example, lets assume that Drive G: is a Bernoulli drive
that was compressed with DoubleSpace. In the conversion
procedure, you will check the drive for any pre-existing
problems, run a program called DCONVERT to convert the drive, and
then mount the new Stacker drive.

NOTE: Because it is not yet a Stacker drive, Drive G does not
      appear in Stacker's drive map.

      Check for any pre-existing problems

       1. If you are in Windows, exit to DOS. The procedure works only
           under DOS.
       2. Insert the removable disk into its drive.
       3. Check the drive for any pre-existing problems. At the DOS
           prompt, type:
              CHKDSK G: <Enter>
Let the DOS CHKDSK utility fix any problems it finds.

      Check the uncompressed removable disk

Examine the disk for free space. If there is at least 58KB free
(or if you can delete sufficient files to make 58KB free space),
proceed to Procedure I. If not, see Procedure II.

Procedure I: Convert the drive to a Stacker drive

       1. Find the name of the compressed volume file by typing:
              DIR G: /AH <Enter>
       2. Look for a filename such as DBLSPACE.000. Note the name to
           use in the next step.
       3. Type:
              DCONVERT /C G:\DBLSPACE.000 <Enter>
where DBLSPACE.000 is the drive to be converted to a Stacker
           drive.

                                 IMPORTANT!

DO NOT INTERRUPT THE CONVERSION PROCESS!
If you do not let DCONVERT finish, you
                               may lose data.

Procedure II: Convert the drive to a Stacker drive via a Hard
      Drive

Note: Your hard drive must have enough room to hold the
DBLSPACE.000 file that is on the removable disk.

       1. Make a temporary directory on the hard drive. For example,
type: MD TMP <enter>. The directory name should be no longer
           than four characters.
       2. Find the name of the compressed volume file by changing to
           that drive and typing:
              DIR G: /AH <Enter>
       3. Look for a filename such as DBLSPACE.000. Note the name to
           use in the next step.
       4. Type:
              DCONVERT /G G:\DBLSPACE.000 C:\TMP\STACVOL.DSK <Enter>
where DBLSPACE.000 is the file to be converted to a Stacker
           STACVOL file.
       5. Format the removable disk in its drive. For example, type:
           FORMAT G: <enter>.
       6. Copy the STACVOL file from the hard drive to the removable
           disk. For example, type:
           COPY C:\TMP\STACVOL.DSK G:<enter>

      Mount the new Stacker drive

       1. Type ED /I <enter>. This brings up the STACKER.INI file in
           an editor.
       2. Press <enter> to insert a new line. Arrow up to the new line
           and type in these lines:
	   /AUTO
	   /RP=1
       3. Go to the end of the file and type in a new line:
           DRIVE:\STACVOL.DSK,RP
Where drive: is the drive letter of the removable drive.
       4. Press CTRL-Z to save the file. Restart your system to have
access to the data on the removable drive.
Recompress your data with the Stacker Optimizer

       1. At the DOS prompt, type:
              STAC <Enter>
       2. Choose Stacker Optimizer.
       3. Select the drive you want to recompress. In this example it
           is drive G.
       4. Choose Full-MaxSpace.
Stacker recompresses the data on the selected drive.

If you wish to use the Stacker anywhere feature with the
      removable disk

       1. Unmount the removable drive. Change to the STACKER directory
           and type:
           STACKER -G: <enter>
       2. Change to the removable drive. If there is at least 58K
free, copy the file STACKER.EXE from the Stacker directory
           to the removable disk.
       3. There will probably be insufficient space to copy the
STACKER.EXE file. If so, remount the removable drive. Change
to the STACKER directory and type:
           STACKER G: <enter>
       4. Type: STAC <enter>. Select the option Stacker Drive Size
           from the menu.
       5. The drive will be defragmented, and then you will be asked
how much space to make uncompressed. Type 58 in the space
provided. Allow the program to make the changes. Please note
that there may be too much data on the disk to shrink the
Stacker drive. You will have to delete sufficient files to
shrink the Stacker drive, or use the disk without the
Stacker Anywhere feature. Also note: the system may need to
reboot in order to mount the removable Stacker disk. If the
disk is in drive A, remove it before pressing enter to
reboot. Insert it into its drive after the system is
           restarted.
       6. Unmount the removable drive. Change to the STACKER directory
           and type:
           STACKER -G: <enter>
       7. Copy the file STACKER.EXE from the Stacker directory to the
           removable disk.
       8. You may now take the disk to a computer without Stacker and
mount it. Insert the disk into its drive, change to that
           drive and type: STACKER <enter>.
