      BACKGROUND

If you experience errors accessing the Stacker Toolbox in
Windows, executing Toolbox functions, erratic mouse behavior, or
unexplained errors in the Control Panel, the problem may be
associated with the ATI Mach 64 or Cirrus Video driver. The
problems are usually defeated by manipulating the video setup or
      updating the driver files.

      SOLUTION

         - Configure the memory manager to work with the video
           card/driver.
         - Manipulate the video setup.
         - Obtain updated video drivers.

Configure the memory manager to work with the video card/driver

Consult the documentation for the video driver. If the driver
requires certain memory addresses, ensure that these addresses
are excluded from use by your memory manager. See your memory
manager's documentation for information on how to exclude a
      memory address.

      Manipulate the video setup

Two procedures have had some success with this problem. The first
is to open, and then close, a Virtual DOS Machine (VDM). The
second is to change video modes.

       1. To open and then close a VDM, double-click on the MS-DOS
prompt icon. After the DOS screen is displayed, type EXIT at
the prompt to close the DOS session. Perform the functions
that previously failed to see if operation is normal. If it
is not, go to the next step.
       2. If you are using the ATI Mach series of video drivers, bring
up the ATI Flexdesk+. Switch to a different video mode and
then switch back. See the ATI documentation for using
           Flexdesk+.
       3. If you are using other drivers, such as Cirrus, try changing
the Windows video setup. We have found that changing from 16
colors to 256 colors usually solves the problem. Switching
video modes to VGA may also resolve the issue, but is less
           desirable aesthetically.
           a. Exit Windows. Change to the Windows directory and type
           Setup <enter>.
           b. Use the arrow keys to highlight the currently selected
           video display. Press <enter>.
           c. Use the arrow keys to a similar video setup, but with 256
colors. Press <enter>, then <enter> again. At the next
           screen also press <enter>.
           d. Restart Windows. Check your system for normal operations.
If you still have problems, restart the Windows Setup from
           DOS.
           e. Use the arrow keys to highlight the currently selected
           video display. Press <enter>.
           f. Use the arrow keys to select VGA. Press <enter>, then
<enter> again. At the next screen also press <enter>.
           g. Restart Windows. Check your system for normal operations.

      Obtain updated video drivers

If you are using the ATI driver, contact ATI to ensure you are
using the latest drivers. This seems to solve most problems.
Contact ATI for details on how to determine if you have the
latest drivers and how to update them. If you obtained your
system from Gateway with an ATI video driver installed you may
contact the Gateway BBS at (800) 846-7562.
