      BACKGROUND

Users sometimes find that they can access a CD-ROM drive in DOS
but not in Windows. This is not due to Stacker, but for your
benefit this StacFax describes some issues that may be involved
      in the problem.

      SOLUTION

         - Determine if SMARTDRV or a disk cache is the issue.
         - Check for Windows-specific drivers.
         - Contact the manufacturer for support.

Determine if SMARTDRV or a disk cache is the issue

If you have DOS 6.x, you may restart your system and press the F8
key when you see the message "Starting xx-DOS...". This will step
you through your CONFIG.SYS file. If you see a line loading
SMARTDRV or other disk cache, say "no" to enabling that line.
When you are asked whether to execute the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, say
"no". Proceed to step 8 below. If you do not have DOS 6.x, follow
the procedure below to disable the cache.

       1. From the DOS prompt type: ED /A <enter>
       2. The AUTOEXEC.BAT file will be brought up in a text editor.
Locate the line containing SMARTDRV or other cache.
       3. Remark out the cache line by typing REM<space> at the
beginning of the line. For example:
           REM C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE
       4. Press CTRL-Z to save the file.
       5. Type: ED /C <enter>
       6. Locate the SMARTDRV or other cache line in the CONFIG.SYS
file. There may not be one. If not, press CTRL-Z to exit.
       7. If there is a SMARTDRV or other cache line, remark it out
the same way you did in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Press CTRL-Z
to save the file then restart your system.
       8. Open Windows to see if the CD-ROM is accessible. If so, the
cache configuration is probably the issue.
       9. Reconfigure the cache to allow access to the CD-ROM drive.
You may disable the cache but your system will probably run
slower. Try moving the SMARTDRV (or other cache) line to
just after the MSCDEX line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Or you may try different cache parameters that may
allow access to the CD-ROM drive. See your cache's
documentation for details on how to change configuration.

      Check for Windows-specific drivers

Check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive. It may
require specific device drivers for Windows. If so, install them
in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

      Contact the manufacturer for support

If the steps above do not allow access to the CD-ROM drive in
Windows, contact the drive manufacturer for support. Stacker does
not prevent CD-ROM drive access in Windows.
