      STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
                       SIZE MISMATCH, NEW INSTALLATION
(Applies to Stacker 3.x for Windows and DOS)
      STAC FAX 31705 (01-13-1994)
      -----------------------------------------------------------------

      BACKGROUND

When you compress a drive containing data, Stacker moves your
files into a compressed STACVOL file. During creation, the
STACVOL file grows dynamically until it reaches full size. If
the creation process ends prematurely, a size-mismatch will
result. You will receive an error message when you restart you
      computer such as:

           E: = C:STACVOL.DSK (Size mismatch) (Write protected)
           Press any key to continue...

NOTE: A size-mismatch on an operational Stacker drive requires a
different solution. See document #31704 "Size Mismatch, Existing
      Installation" for details.

      SOLUTION

         - Let AutoRecover restore the system, or
         - Manually restore the system, fix any disk errors, and
           recompress the drive.
         - What to do if you boot into Windows or a menu program.

LET AUTORECOVER RESTORE THE SYSTEM (VERSION 3.1)

Stacker 3.1 includes an automatic repair utility called
AutoRecover. It will detect the error, announce the interruption
of the Setup process, and will offer to UNSTACK the drive,
restoring it to its original configuration

       1. Accept the option to UNSTACK.
       2. After the drive is uncompressed, examine it for problems or
issues that may have caused the error. Run CHKDSK or a disk
repair utility such as Norton's Disk Doctor or PC Tools'
Diskfix. If you have a disk repair utility, also run a
           surface scan on the drive.
       3. Disable any anti-virus programs and run the Stacker Setup
           again.

      MANUALLY RESTORE THE SYSTEM

If you have a Stacker version prior to 3.1, AutoRecover will not
be available to restore the system. If so, or if AutoRecover does
      not invoke, do the following:

       1. At the DOS prompt, type:
               UNSTACK DRIVE:
where drive: is the drive that is compressed.
       2. After the drive is uncompressed, examine it for things that
may have interrupted the Setup. Run CHKDSK or a disk repair
utility such ac Norton's Disk Doctor or PC Tools' Diskfix.
If you have a disk repair utility, also run a surface scan
           of the drive.
       3. Disable any anti-virus programs and run the Stacker Setup
           again.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU BOOT INTO WINDOWS OR A MENU PROGRAM

If you boot into Windows or into a menu program, you may not be
able to perform the steps above because the write protection on
the drive may prevent you from exiting to DOS. You will have to
interrupt the boot process so that you can get to the DOS prompt.

       1. Reboot the computer. When you get the Stacker error
message, press any key to continue.
       2. After the computer continues booting, press and hold the
Ctrl key and tap the "C" key several times in rapid
succession. If your timing is right, you will get the
           message:
           Terminate batch job (Y/N)?
Respond "Y", and press enter. You will then be at the DOS
prompt where you can execute the steps in the section above.

Note: The secret to successfully interrupting the boot process is
timing. The Ctrl-C key combination must be pressed while the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file is executing. You may need to experiment a few
times to get it just right.
