      BACKGROUND

When Stacker mounts a Stacker drive it verifies the STACVOL file
containing the compressed data. If the size of the STACVOL file
is incorrect, Stacker pauses the normal startup of your computer
with this message until the problem is corrected:

           E: = C:STACVOL.DSK (Size mismatch) (Write protected)
           Press any key to continue...

Stacker protects every STACVOL file by setting READ-ONLY, HIDDEN,
and SYSTEM attributes. However, if a corrupt or unstable program
violates DOS's conventions by truncating the STACVOL file, a size-
      mismatch will result.

      SOLUTION

         - Obtain REPAIR.EXE
         - Determine the uncompressed drive letter
         - Unmount the Stacker drive
         - Run a disk repair utility or CHKDSK /F on the uncompressed
           drive
         - Run REPAIR

      Obtain REPAIR.EXE

If you have Stacker 3.1 for Windows and DOS, you already have
REPAIR.EXE. Otherwise, you can download it from the Stac BBS and
copy it to a floppy disk.

      Determine the uncompressed drive letter

The uncompressed drive contains the STACVOL file which must be
repaired. To locate the file, from a DOS prompt, type STACKER
and press <Enter>. Take note of the write-protected drive letter
and STACVOL file in square brackets (E:\STACVOL.DSK in this
      example):

Drive C: was drive E: at boot time [E:\STACVOL.DSK - Write
      protected]

IMPORTANT: To avoid data loss, do not copy any files to the
      uncompressed drive.

      Unmount the Stacker drive

To unmount the Stacker drive, type STACKER -d and press <Enter>,
where d is the Stacker drive letter (C in this example).

Run a disk repair utility or CHKDSK /F on the uncompressed drive

       1. When repairing the uncompressed drive (E in this example),
the utility will prompt you to save lost chains as files.
           Respond no.
       2. If the utility lists the STACVOL file as being cross-linked
with other files, you must delete the other files and then
run the disk repair utility again.

      Run REPAIR

       1. If you are using Stacker 3.1, insert Disk 1 (labeled for MS-
DOS 6) into drive A (or B) and change to that drive. Type
CD TECH to access the directory containing REPAIR.EXE. Note
that some distributions of the Stacker disks placed the TECH
directory and REPAIR.EXE file on Disk 2. If you get "Bad
Command..." using Disk 1, use Disk 2.
       2. If you downloaded REPAIR.EXE and copied it to a disk, insert
that disk into drive A (or B) and change to that drive.
       3. The command syntax for REPAIR is
                   REPAIR /=U d:\STACVOL.XXX
where d:\STACVOL.XXX is the uncompressed drive letter and
STACVOL file you determined in a previous step. For
           example,
                   REPAIR /=U E:\STACVOL.DSK <Enter>
       4. You will see messages like:
                Repairing host FAT...
                Host FAT successfully repaired.
Please restart your computer so that the changes may
          take effect
Remove any floppy disks and restart your computer to access
          the repaired Stacker drive.
