SAN DIEGO, Calif., November 14, 1994 - Stac Electronics
(NASDAQ:STAC), the leading supplier of high performance
compression products for data storage and communications,
today announced Stacker* 2.0 for Macintosh** - the safest,
easiest and fastest way to double the storage capacity of any
Apple Macintosh hard disk or other SCSI storage devices.

Stacker 2.0 for Macintosh runs as much as three times faster than
the original Stacker for Macintosh, operates in native mode on
Power Macintosh** systems, and minimizes battery drain for
      PowerBook** users.

"Performance, performance and more performance - that's what this
new release is all about," said Gary Clow, Stac president and
chief executive officer. "There is no safer, easier or faster
way than Stacker to double the storage capacity of any Apple
      Macintosh hard drive."

Unlike early file-by-file compression products that required
users to launch the compression program, select specific files to
      be compressed, and then wait for the compression to occur;
Stacker for Macintosh uses a disk-oriented approach which doubles
the size of the system's storage capacity.

When a file is opened or saved to a Stacker drive it is
instantaneously and transparently handled by Stacker. Performance
improvements in Stacker 2.0 mean there is no longer a system slow
down. "In fact, many users will actually see an improvement in
application launch time, thanks to Stacker," said Rory Bolt,
Stacker for Macintosh product manager. By operating at the disk
level, Stacker for Macintosh avoids the compatibility problems
inherent in the file-oriented approach. And, because Stacker
operates in real time rather than during idle time, when
      PowerBooks
prefer to go into sleep mode to conserve battery life, it is the
best compression option for portable users.

On the safety side, Stacker's robust file system adds redundancy
while compressing the data, which allows it to provide an
automatic datasaving set of repair tools. Stacker's extensive
error checking provides an extra layer of safety beyond the basic
      Macintosh file system.

And, Stacker for Macintosh is based on Stac LZS*, Stac's patented
data compression technology that is relied upon daily by more
than nine million computer users worldwide. Stacker is 100
percent compatible with all Macintosh applications, system
      extensions (INITs) and disk repair
utilities, and will work with any SCSI device, including SyQuest,
      and magneto-optical removable media.

Other features of Stacker 2.0 for Macintosh include:
-- Stacker Anywhere* - allows removable Stacker drives to be
mounted on any Macintosh system - even those without Stacker
            installed.
-- Partitioning - works with multiple partitions on the same
            drive; installable on any partition.
-- Support for 1 GB drives - compresses drives as large as
1 gigabyte to give up to 2 gigabytes capacity.
-- Full Uninstall - restores hard drive to uncompressed
            condition and removes Stacker software.
-- Online help - context-sensitive online help, as well as
            Balloon Help for System 7.

      Pricing and Availability
