Private Idaho 2.6b3 (beta) - freeware
4/11/96
copyright 1995, 1996 Joel McNamara

What is it?
-----------
This is a new release of Private Idaho (a PGP, anonymous
remailer, and nym server front-end for Windows). This document
updates any information found in the help file.

The best way to sum up this release, is PI goes "multiple." New
support for multiple nyms, multiple nym servers, multiple keys for
signing messages, and message transfers to multiple applications.

New 2.6b3 Features (4/11/96)
------------------
Text in the message box can now be printed
Support for multiple PGP keys for signing messages
Support for multiple nyms and nym servers
Transfer messages to up to four different applications
User editable address book

Notes on things changed since 2.6b1
-----------------------------------
I've finally licensed the 2.0 version of the IPPort custom control.
The latest release of the PIDAHO.EXE file contains the licensing code,
so when you run it, you'll no longer get the devSoft "nag" screen.
Thanks for your patience with this.

There was a 2.6b2 release (4/1/96) that had numerous bugs dealing
with saving options and using multiple nyms. These bugs were fixed.

Fixed the PGP message scan routine so the first 20 lines of a
message are searched for the PGP header (previously was 10).

Fixed a bug that was displaying nym servers in the remailer list.

Added an option to leave PGP messages on the mail server instead
of immediately deleting upon download.

Added an interface to "spoof" e-mail directly sent from Private
Idaho (click on Message to the left of the Send button).

Removed the old way of accessing an address book.

Changed the "E-mail" menu name to "Message."

Multiple application transfer - click on the Multiple button in the
Transfer Options dialog in the Message menu.

Select PGP key to use for signatures - click on the "Prompt for user
ID when siging" checkbox. Specify up to 8 user ID keys (from your
secret keyring) by clicking on the User IDs button.

Nym server information relies on Raph's remailer list. If a new
nym server comes on line, be sure to add its PGP key to your
public ring before using Private Idaho to create a nym on it. The
Add Keys button only adds keys of those nym servers listed in the
NYMKEYS.TXT file.

If you already have a nym account(s), you can add it to the NYM.TXT
file instead of using Private Idaho's step-by-step procedure. Just
create a text file named NYMS.TXT and put it in the same directory
as Private Idaho. The file format is simple. The first line is the
nym account (followed by a carriage return), the second line is the
full nym name (followed by a carriage return), the third line is
the nym server (followed by a carriage return). The format looks
like this:

mrree
Mister Ree
alias@alpha.c2.org

Add as many nym accounts (following this format) as you have.

I accidentally named Private Idaho PI.EXE in the 2.6b1 release.
It has been renamed PIDAHO.EXE for 2.6b2, and will continue to be
named this to avoid confusion (at least with the 16-bit version).

Feedback now specifies the version number.

Updated copies of the remailer info, USENET gateway, and remailer
PGP keys are included with this release.

New 2.6b Features (1/16/96)
-----------------
Winsock "Connect/Disconnect" for on-line and off-line work
Receive and store PGP messages from POP3 mail servers
Improved scripting for mail transfers
"Hard" carriage return word wrap
Reply to ">"
Revised help file
Various bug fixes and user interface tweaks

New Things Since 2.6b
---------------------
Got rid of red and green "lights" next to Send button. These
were meant to indicate whether a Winsock connection was made or not.
Now, the Send button and the Send message and Scan for PGP messages
commands in the E-mail menu are disabled until a connection is made.
In addition, a "Winsock not connected" message is displayed on the
e-mail status line. This should be more intuitive for people.

YOU MUST HAVE A WINSOCK CONNECTION TO SCAN FOR PGP MESSAGES OR
SEND E-MAIL DIRECTLY FROM PRIVATE IDAHO.

The nym field has now been expanded. It was previously only limited
to 10 characters.

Scans for both PGP encryption and signature header messages.

If you are having problems with sending e-mail directly from Private
Idaho or scanning for PGP messages, add the following line to the
[Options] section of the PIDAHO.INI file:

SMTPLog=true

This will create a log file in the directory containing Private Idaho
that lists the entire SMTP and POP3 conversation between the mail
server and Private Idaho. If you have problems, e-mail me a copy of
the log file. It should help in trying to debug what's happening.

Installing for the first time
-----------------------------
If this is the first time you've used Private Idaho, read the
installation instructions in the PIDAHO.HLP file.

Updating an older version
-------------------------
If you're using an older version of 2.6b, just replace the old
PIDAHO.EXE file with the one contained in the .ZIP file.

If you're using an older, 2.5 version of Private Idaho, to update, do
the following:

Replace the following files with the new versions:

PIDAHO.EXE
PIDAHO.HLP

Add the following file to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory:

IPP20.VBX

The remailer information files have also been updated (RMINFO.TXT,
CPMAILER.TXT, and RMKEYS.TXT) so if you have older copies, you may
want to replace these files also. The NYMKEYS.TXT file replaces
the ALPHA.TXT file, and contains current nym server PGP keys.

If you're using a pre-2.5 version, do a complete re-install. There's
lots of new features, and some file formats have changed.

Connecting to the Internet
--------------------------
Load the help file and look at this section. It should answer all of
the questions you have.

Miscellaneous Notes (4/11/96)
-----------------------------
Yes, a 32-bit version will make its debut, hopefully during the
first half of 1996. (Be prepared for it to be somewhere between double
and triple its current size though. Visual Basic 4.0 does not
produce small .EXEs.) I'll also likely be using OCXs from
Microsoft's new Internet Control Pack. Look for some major interface
changes.

The help file will be updated with the next release.
