                                  About Install
Introduction

This Document is intended to supplement the FastBucks Operator Manual.
and give a more thorough description of how to install FastBucks on your
system with the new Install.exe program.

Install.exe has been completely re-designed to save all of the necessary
FastBucks operating files in a single archived file. This adds security from
file tampering and damage from the Us. Postal service.

More flexibility has been added to where you can place your FastBucks
program and data files. I would strongly advise using the Install programs
defaults for program installation, unless you know exactly what you are doing
and where you want to place your FastBucks program and data files.

Hardware Requirements

Install requires a minimum of 296K of system memory to run. If your
system does not have this much free memory available you will have to install
FastBucks on a friends computer and manually copy the files over to yours.

New Features

The Install.exe has the following new features.

Automatic modification of Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files.

A media check is performed on the INSTALL-TO-DRIVE before any copying is
    performed.

Source Files are tested for data integrity while they are copied to the
    destination drive.

All files are packed into a single distribution file for added security.

Technical Support

Limited technical support is available for the FastBucks program and
Install.exe program by calling (713)541-3963 between 8AM and 5PM Central
Standard Time. Additional support is available on the Software Expressions
BBS at (713) 541-3910 24 Hours a day. I try to answer all questions about
the program within 24 hours.

                             First time Installation

Installing on a Hard disk

Place your FastBucks distribution diskette into drive A: Type A:Install
<return>. Wait until Install gets to the Introduction Screen and press
<Enter>, then select "New FastBucks Installation" from the menu.

Install will ask you for the Drive and directory you wish to place your
FastBucks program into, and make a suggestion., should you have no particular
preference. It will then extract and install the necessary program files
into that sub-directory. After the program files have been installed, You
will be asked if you would like the sample data files supplied with the
program. If you answer "Y" the install program will ask you what drive and
directory you want to save you data files on and place the sample data files
on your selected drive and directory.

Your new FastBucks program is now installed.

If you'd like to extract the FastBucks operator manual and place it on
your hard disk. Select "Extract FastBucks Operator Manual" From the Main
Menu. Install will again ask you for the drive and directory that you want
the Operator Manual files saved and place them there for you. You can later
view the operator manual or send it to your printer at a later time.

When you exit the install program it will offer to modify your Config.sys
and Autoexec.bat file. If you Select "Go Ahead and Modify" , Install will
check your config.sys file on your Boot drive for a FILES=20 statement and a
Buffers=20 statement. If it finds files < 20 or buffers < 20 it will set
them to 20 . It will then check the Autoexec.bat file and add the drive and
directory to your Path statement. If you don't have an autoexec.bat file it
will create one for you. You also may optionally select. "Create example
files". This option will create an example file for your config.sys file
named Config.exm and an example autoexec.bat file named Autoexec.exm. You
can later view these files and manually set up your config.sys and
autoexec.bat file.

Note: in order for FastBucks 4.10 to operate you must have a statement in your config.sys file with a minimum of Files=20.

Updating a Hard Disk

Install will update an existing copy of FastBucks in a manner very
similar to installing a New FastBucks Installation. with the exception that
you tell install where your present program is stored. It will then erase
the old program and Install the New one. THIS WILL NOT EFFECT YOUR DATA
FILES. Only the program files will be effected.

Place the FastBucks distribution diskette into drive A: Type
A:Install<return>

Wait until Install gets to the Introduction Screen and press <Enter>,
then select "Update an existing FastBucks program" from the menu.

Install will then ask your for the drive and directory that you presently
are running FastBucks in. If it cannot locate the FastBucks program it will
Yell at you and return to the main menu. If It locates your FastBucks
program files it will determine the version of the program and erase the
original program files. It will then copy the New FastBucks program files to
the selected drive and directory. If it determined that you were running a
3.1x version of FastBucks it will ask you for a drive and directory for you
to place the FastBucks file conversion utility into.

After Installation is complete Install will ask you if you want to change
your Autoexec.bat file and config.sys file. It's your choice as to whether
or not you want these files modified.

If the install program prompted you that you have to convert your data
files to the FastBucks 4.xx data format , go to the directory that you have
placed the conv31.exe file and run it "Before" you try to operate FastBucks.

If you'd like to extract the FastBucks operator manual and place it on
your hard disk. Select "Extract FastBucks Operator Manual" From the Main

Updating on a system with a 5-1/4" and 3-1/2" drives

The following instruction assume the following conditions...

FastBucks was supplied to you on a 5-14" disk.
Drive A: is a 5-14" Disk
Drive B: is a 3-1/2" Disk

If you have been running the FastBucks program on drive A:. Make a copy
of the disk for Drive B:

Place the FastBucks Distribution Diskette into drive A:

Place the FastBucks distribution diskette into drive A: Type
A:Install<return>

Wait until Install gets to the Introduction Screen and press <Enter>,
then select "Update an existing FastBucks program" from the menu.

Select Drive B:

If Install cannot locate the FastBucks program it will Yell at you and
return to the main menu. If It locates your FastBucks program files it will

It will then copy the New FastBucks program files to the selected drive.

If it determined that you were running a 3.1x version of FastBucks it
will ask you for a drive for you to place the FastBucks file conversion
utility into. Place a "Blank" formatted diskette into drive B:

Select Drive B:

Install will now copy the Conv31.exe conversion file to drive B: Set this
disk aside for later use for converting your data files.

After you have exited the install program you will have to perform the
following operation:

Place the New FastBucks working diskette into drive B:. Then Place your
OLD FastBucks working diskette into Drive A:

Type Copy B:*.* A:*.*

You should now have a working copy of FastBucks on your A Drive.

If you need to convert your data files Read the section on "Converting
Data Files". Do not run FastBucks before you have converted your data files
if you have previously been using FastBucks 3.1x as this version of FastBucks
will not be able to read them.

If you'd like to extract the FastBucks operator manual and place it on
your hard disk. Select "Extract FastBucks Operator Manual" From the Main
Menu. Install will again ask you for the drive and directory that you want

                                                                      Page 8
                      Converting FastBucks 3.1X Data Files

What Does Convert Do?

The CONV3.1 file conversion program converts your present 3.18 data files
and converts them to the FastBucks 4.xx format. It is a very simple program
to run and should give you no problems.

It will ask you for the drive and directory that your present FastBucks
3.18 data files are in. It will then ask you for the drive and directory
that you want install to place it in.

The conversion process is straight foreword. CONV31.EXE will read your
old data files and place a converted copy in the drive and directory that you
have specified.

The only thing that you have to remember when you are ready to run your
new copy of FastBucks is the drive and directory that you have placed the
converted data files in and inform FastBucks where your new data files are
when you run it for the first time.

Running CONV31 On a Hard Disk

I will assume that you have extracted CONV31.EXE from the distribution
diskette and have placed it in the default FastBucks directory. If you have
placed it somewhere else, I assume that you know where you put it.. <grin>

Type CD\FBUCKS Type CONFIG31 <Enter>

CONV31 should come up and ask you if you have a color monitor. If you do
answer "Y" and continue into the program.

CONV31 will then ask you for the drive and directory that your present
FastBucks 3.1x data files are stored in. A default answer would be
C:\FBUCKS\DATA

It will then ask you for the drive and directory that you want the
converted data files placed in. Again a default answer would be
C:\FBUCKS\FBDATA

The conversion process will proceed as follows:

Convert will read the data files in Cl\FBUCKS\DATA and copy them to
C:\FBUCKS\FBDATA. It will exit when the conversion process is complete.

When you run your new copy of FastBucks for the first time. Remember to
the Drive and directory that you have placed the converted data files into
and set the FastBucks data path to that drive and directory.

                                                                     Page 9
Running CONV31.EXE On A Two-Floppy System

Place the diskette that you prepared with INSTALL.EXE that contains the
convert program into drive A:., Then type A:CONV31 <enter>. CONV31.EXE
Should ask you if you have a color monitor and then proceed to ask you what
drive and directory you have been using your old FastBucks data files on.

Remove the disk presently in drive A: and replace it with your old
FastBucks 3.18 Data files and place a "Blank" but Formatted diskette into
drive B:

Answer A:\

It will then ask you what drive and directory you want to place your
converted files on.

Answer B:\

The conversion process will now start. The files in drive A: will be
read and the converted files will be placed on drive B:.

When you run your new copy of FastBucks for the first time make sure you
have your converted data files in the system, and inform FastBucks what drive
the data is in when it prompts you for the drive and data path for your data
files.

Running CONV31.EXE On A System With 5-1/4" & 3-1/2" Drives

The process is exactly the same as for a two drive conversion, with the
exception that you will have to copy either the source or destination
diskette to the appropriate size diskette.

Example: Your old FastBucks 3.1x data is on a 5-1/4" diskette...

Insert t he Conv31.exe diskette into the 5-1/4" drive and type CONV31
<Enter>. When the program asks you for the FastBucks 3.18 data file drive
and directory. . Place the Old FastBucks data diskette into the 5-1/4"
drive. Place a "Blank" formatted 3-1/2" diskette into drive B:

Enter A:\ Or whatever your 5-1/4" disk drive is.

When the program asks you where you want the converted files placed.

Enter B:\ Or whatever your 3-1/2" disk drive is.

The conversion program will now read the data on your 5-1/4" disk drive
and place the converted data files on your 3-1/2" disk drive. When the
conversion process has completed. Copy the files from the 3-1/2" disk drive
to the 5-1/4" disk drive.

Obviously this process can be done with the 3-1/2" disk as the source and
the 5-1/4" disk drive as the destination. It's simply your choice on how you
want to run it...
