Does it increase the chances for thyroid cancer later in life? I am asking because I had a (low, they said) therapeutic dose about 25 years ago when I was 17 and wonder if I have an unusually high risk of thyroid cancer. I have heard that accidental doses of Radioactive Iodine from nuclear accidents may lead to cancer in later life, but have no idea how the reported accidental doses compare with a therapeutic dose, or if the same isotope is involved. Just wondering, as if I need more to worry about. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ( Alan Filipski, GTX Corp, 8836 N. 23rd Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85021, USA ) ( {decvax, hplabs, uunet!amdahl, nsc}!sun!sunburn!gtx!al (602)870-1696 ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --- QM v1.23/b * Origin: St Joseph's Medical Center Phoenix (602) 235-9653 (1:114/15.0) PATH: 114/15 103/501 265/7 13/13 396/1 147/7 46 EID:dbcd 14f1b422 MSGID: 1:114/15 26a3fbcc UFGATE newsin 1.27 From: geb@dsl.pitt.edu (Gordon E. Smith Registration $10.00 CDN APR90 BIBLE QUIZ BIBLEQ SMITH FILES: BIBLEQ41.SDN New Release "Bible-Q" is a quiz-type game for the IBM PC and compatibles. It is designed to challenge your factual knowledge of the Scriptures and to encourage you to dig in them. The shareware version of the game contains 600 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Scriptures. More questions are available through registration. "Bible-Q" is meant to be easy to play. Simply follow the onscreen instructions. There are modes of play. types of game. In the manual game the player(s) can choose the category and difficulty level of the question. In the automatic game the program does this automatically. At the request of several users, Bible references were added so that users can check the context of the questions. At times no specific reference was applicable, so the program refers the user to a map or dictionary, or simply replies with the word "general." The questions are arranged in five categories--Old Testament 1, Old Testament 2, Geography etc., Life of Jesus, and New Testament. The "Old Testament 1" category contains questions drawn from the books of Genesis through Ruth. "Old Testament 2" contains questions from 1 Samuel through Malachi. "Geography etc." contains questions on geographical facts drawn from the whole Bible. It also contains general questions on the Bible. "Life of Jesus" contains questions drawn from the four gospels. "New Testament" contains questions drawn in general from the New Testament. Each category has 120 (240 for registered version) questions. You now have the option of printing out quizzes. This option appears on the first menu. Subsequent menus will display the types of quizzes available. This feature should be useful for Bible classes and church groups. THE BEREAN AWARD: Players scoring more than 30,000 points in the game get the Berean award on the scoreboard screen. I've often told those who were discussing the "protesters" that if you want to meet someone who is *seriously* against war - then find someone who has FOUGHT in one. It's hard to see death on that scale and still be able to believe that supposedly civilized people could resort to that. It happens though - and sometimes it's even necessary. I have a good friend who, after serving in Nam, went to Israel for the 73 war. He was on the Golian (sp?) Heights watching the arty and Air Force lay the Arabs to waste. Said he'd never seen anything in Nam to compare to it. I asked him why, after knowing war, he'd went over there. His answer was simple - "I'm a Jew" > don't wish war on the Americans or anybody else, but I > think that going through a war as a civilian is something > that is sorely missing from the American experience. If you recall, one of the rationals in Vietnam was "If we don't stop them (the communists) over there, we'll have to stop them here" Nobody thought the Vietnamese were gearing up to invade, it was the "generic" communist expansion that we went to stop. I'm not real sure from your description, but there was a common problem with the power supply connectors on some of those units. If this is the same thing as what I'm thinking of, the metal contacts in the connector with the wires in it are probably discolored from overheating, due to bad connection at the connector itself. You may also have some damage to the board, too. The best suggestion I can offer for this is to remove the wires from the connector, and the connector from the board, and solder the wires directly to the pc board, after cleaning everything up. If the traces on the board are damaged, you may need to connect the wire to a different point that's electrically connected to the same place. However, genetically and otherwise biochemically, the sperm is not actually HUMAN. However, the sperm and egg together, AFTER FERTILIZATION, do INDEED make up a human being. Those who insist that the living "thing" produced thusly is not a human until it is born and perhaps develops some "personality" or "per- sonal worth" or something equally as nebulous are those same persons who would have us believe that we, as adult human being, are completely de- termined by our environment and experiences and therefore ARE NOT RESPON- SIBLE FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS (e.g. we murdered our neighbor because our par- ents beat us, or we raped the coed because Hugh Hefner sold us dirty mag- azines). Basically, we are only a depository for input from our environ- ment. I think this whole arguement has been used to death by the psych establishment to justify their jobs. Contraception, on the other hand, is NOT seen as murder (although many people mistakenly see it as murder of sperm and egg). Actually, the Church opposes contraception because is warps,if you will, a relationship between a man and woman endorsed by God, blessed by God. If you take reproduction out of sex, so says Cardinal Ratzinger, you remove the "reference point" of the act. So sex then searches for a refer- ence and generally gravitates to a more selfish aspect, that is Pleasure. If reproduction is not in the cards, then you don't have to particularly worry about having sex with your spouse, and adult, or even someone of the opposite sex. Of course, this is just an "off the top of my head" reply. Cardinal R. says it better. Your should look him (his writing) up. Is there such a thing as > Novell certification or is he trying to put something > over us? Yes, there is a novell certification program. Send them a machine or product, let them test it and do a tech bulletin on it, and pay for their time and you get certification. Is it always necessary or important? NO.. Almost all of the major manufacturers are Novell certified and show a little certification label in their ads. The fact is there are a lot of clones and compatibles that run novell just fine and are certified under a different name. Anything with an American Megatrends motherboard works just fine(regardless of whose label is on it), Mylex is ok, DTK is only so-so and sometimes oh-no.. Anytime a consultant recommends only a certain hardware and knows just exactly where to find it usually means there are kickbacks to the consultant and possibly he isn't very objective. That is an over simplification. There are great objective consultants but specifications should be limited to types of requisate and functional equipment leaving off brand names and dealers unless specifically asked for by the client. What I recommend for a network, 80386 machine 20mhz or higher, with 4mb of ram or more using an arcnet, ethernet, tokenring card depending on situation, with disk space to fit number of users. Now if you ask for specifics I have several brands that I like and some I don't. Although the people in the room had come from distant parts of the U.S. (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Oklahoma, and California), and although they were all hearing impaired to one degree or another, neither cultural distance nor deafness interfered with the communications and comradery that evening. Pardon my intrusion but as you probably remember, one of my closest friends is visually impaired. She decided to go back to school two years ago at the age of 41 (is almost finished now as this is her last year). She is a character as she is often doing the UNREAL at times. I was on the floor laughing when she told me about going to classes and having to use the stairs (she carries a cane). She stated one day she was moseying along and feeling the wall while going from ground level to second level and as she reached the 2nd level floor, she ran into a male. In fact, she said she was using her hands to feel her way around and just happened to catch this male. Talk about getting one's share of touchy feelies!!! (grinning) Our local university is not exactly accessible (something we are working on) and I was appalled when she told me she fell of one of the small bridges that are a part of the landscape. She said two fellas tried to catch her before she went over but were too late. It was not a bad fall but she had wet herself when it happened and said the fellas kept trying to help her and she said she wanted to be alone as she was more embarrassed about the wet spot on the back of her skirt than anything. My friend's coordination is not very good at this point but she's getting better. I just love her sense of humor and the way she turns everything into a joke. But I have a question KW> for you. Both the utility you mentioned and the one Gene Mentioned are KW> suburb with Telix. The Zmodem setup works so smoothly with it. So why KW> not mention off line utilities. If the discussion was something to the effect that XYZ utility works well with Telix, or, I use the folowing SALT script to use the XYZ utility...that would be fine. However, in my opinion, the discussion started to be about the inherrent benefits of Opus Express rather than about methods of utilizing Telix with Opus Express. KW> There are echo's for the actual KW> utilities yes. But not everyone knows they do not have to stay online KW> to read and reply to mail. This is the responsibility for the SysOp. I use Opus Express on my system, and have done quite a bit of testing and debugging for Hector in discovering problems with previous versions. I also have an entire opening screen dedicated to informing users of the program and it's benefits with respect to echomail. KW> Brief mentions of the programs is ok by my book. Same here. Except when it appears as though the message is merely an advertisement for a product rather than a discussion of how it is utilized with Telix itself. KW> I also use Telix, and use a Utility that Gene Zeak wrote for it. I use Telix too (no kidding 8-), as well as a Paul Roub utility. In fact, I have a program for SysOps to reformat a nodelist into a Telix .FON dialing directory file. However, I kept my discussion of my utility to how it is utilized for Telix uses. I did not go into detail of all of it's other functions. With 30-40 messages per day in this echo, the users prefer very little off topic messages as they tend to add up and clog the echo. I'm using TP version 6.2 (yes, I have a copy of 6.34G, but I think I'll just wait until 6.4 is finished, pollished, and released b4 upgrading...) and I have a copy of TPBEdit 3.2. The file I'm looking for is the call back verifier that goes with TPB Script's on-line validater. I'll go looking for it in a minute. The consensus seems to be that Roy's idea for a moderator election with me as the neutral election judge is a good one. The rules are: 1. The nomination period has already begun and will continue through July 31. 2. The voting period will run from August 1 through August 14, inclusive. 3. I'll announce the winner (sic) and tallies on August 15. 4. Candidates must be either sysops or points (trust me, this is necessary!) 5. Nominations must be made by someone other than the nominee, although no seconds will be required. Nominations must be accepted by the nominee. 6. Vote should be sent via NetMail to me at 1:106/506.6 or, if necessary, via the echo itself. Due to NetMail delays, all are encouraged to vote early since votes received after midnight, August 14 will not be counted. 7. The voting is open to all C_PLUSPLUS echo participants. To avoid any possibility of ballot stuffing, this means that to vote, you must have posted something in the echo relating to a C++ topic other than this election during the voting or nomination periods. 8. All votes received via NetMail will be acknowledged via NetMail. I'll maintain archives of all votes received. These will be available for public inspection unless a voter explicitly requests his vote not be made public. I don't think a secret ballot is really necessary in this case and hope no one makes such a request. OK, that's it. To date, we have Roy Browning nominated. We need at least one other candidate. As a neutral judge, I can't nominate such people as Bob Jarvis, Martin Maney, Jim Nutt, David Engel, Grant deLorean, et al, but I can point out that we have (Commandant Lassard voice) many, many fine potential candidates! --- QM v1.00 * Origin: MicroFirm : Down to the C in chips (1:106/506.6) PATH: 30103/6 106/506 455 112 116 396/1 147/7 46 EID:3b26 14f11b27 In a message of , Leslie Satenstein (1:167/99@fidonet) writes: >In one of your responses to someone on ZTC versions, you mentioned that >you were evaluating vers 2.12. Now, Mark Williams is still in business and is available to support the existing product though no new updates will be released. Based on your equation, their rating is $29/infinity = $0/year. Are they therefore a best buy? On a more reasonable note, we could say Mix Power C is $20/2 yrs = $10/yr. What does this all mean? Nothing, really... P.S. Your thoughts? Bob: You have achieved a very interesting solution to the problem, one I would not normally think of. Since I had already thought of a different method I will it post below. I tend to give the implementor as much latitude as possible thus created two different members. The first "+=" is designed for inlining but overwrites the subproducts. The second "+" creates complete temporaries with all the inherent overhead. The choice of which to use is at the programmer's discretion. Caveats: I recommend returning a value from an overloaded operator else its validity can't be tested "while (result[i++] = n1[i++] += n2[i++]);". Of course a NULL value will have to terminate the arrays, etc... Always create a copy constructor or a dummy one. Else anytime the assignment operator is overloaded you may be surprised by it being called instead. Comment out the one below and observe the output. This has turned into an excellent discussion, Roy Browning ******************************** Code follows ****************************** #include #include class A_NUMBER { private: // done like this to make it too big to return in a register long num; // or register pair char *name; public: A_NUMBER(int n, char *nm = "DEFAULT"); A_NUMBER(A_NUMBER&){} A_NUMBER operator+(A_NUMBER& a); A_NUMBER& operator=(A_NUMBER& a) {num = a.num; return *this;} A_NUMBER& operator+=(A_NUMBER& a) {num += a.num; return *this;} void print(void); }; A_NUMBER::A_NUMBER(int n, char *nm) { num = (long)n; name = new char[strlen(nm)+1]; strcpy(name, nm); } A_NUMBER A_NUMBER::operator+(A_NUMBER& a) { A_NUMBER number((int)a.num); number.num += num; return number; } void A_NUMBER::print(void) { cout << name << " = " << num << "\n"; } main() { A_NUMBER n1(1, "n1"), n2(2, "n2"), n7(7, "n7"), n14(14, "n14"); A_NUMBER result1(0, "result1"); result1 = n1 + n2 + n7 + n14; n1.print(); n2.print(); n7.print(); n14.print(); result1.print(); cout << "\n\n"; A_NUMBER result2(0, "result2"); result2 = n1 += n2 += n7 += n14; n1.print(); n2.print(); n7.print(); n14.print(); result2.print(); } ******************************************************************************* Standard Disclaimer: When solving software problems coding methods are selected to fit the task at hand. The method chosen will be determined by coding style of the programmer. All methods have side effects thus there can never be a perfect solution for any problem and there are exceptions for every rule. What is being presented here is a different coding style, it is not the "correct" method nor is it "incorrect". This post is presented in a very informal and inprecise manner. What I'm trying to exemplify is a common concept not the finer points of the C++ Langauge which will yet take years to master. --- msged 1.99S ZTC * Origin: The Fulcrum's Edge (713)350-6284 Spring, Texas (FidoNet 1:106/506) PATH: 106/506 455 112 116 396/1 147/7 46 EID:7cc7 14f19b77 Did the fact that you said that the Segate cards will not work with and MFM or RLI drive present mean that the Card will work only if it is the only DISK CARD? also I be interested how you got them working in Xenix too. I don't know if you are aware of this but, in the last few years, they've bought hundreds of entrepreneuraial companies which were developing new technologies. If you wanna get real rich; come up with a good, original idea; start a company to develop it...and let the Japanese buy you out. I'm still not a Biological Determinist, however. I don't think that it's Japanese genetics that militates against technological originality. My perception is that there are very strong culturally-based negative sanctions against being original (or different). This is a strength, however, when it comes to Production techniques which tend to be Cooperative activities.
