                        Silver Xpress Mail System.
                       Version 2.28Q1 for QuickBBS
                  and compatible systems (Remote Access)

Welcome to the Silver Xpress Mail System! Silver Xpress is a premiere
BBS off-line mail system designed with valuable features for both the
   users and the sysops.

The Silver Xpress system has two primary functions, one for users and
   one for sysops:

     1) Users can take their time handling mail off-line, which reduces
their telephone charges and allows them to create higher quality
mail. Users can dial into thousands of BBS systems of different
types and use the same Silver Xpress system.

     2) Sysops can increase their user base since thousands of Silver
Xpress users on various bulletin board systems already exist.
Xpress also increases board turnover rate and produces higher
quality messages from users since user connect time is
drastically reduced. In addition, sysops can enjoy the same
benefits as the user by using the reader off-line.

Silver Xpress is supported on Opus, Fido, QBBS, Remote Access,
Maximus, RBBS, and soon PCBoard. Development is in progress for other
   popular BBS's.

Xpress differentiates itself from other off-line mail systems with
advanced features such as a facsimile interface which allows users to
send FAX mail to any FAX machine in the world, intelligent quoting
mechanism, "smart" mail compression detection, addressee lists,
file folders, text video graphics, music, windows, file requesting,
and much more. But most important from a sysop standpoint is that it
"directly interfaces with the BBS". No packers, unpackers, mail
   tossers are required.

Xpress is used in over 1500 bbs around the world. It is by far the
most popular and most installed off-line mail system.

Install Xpress and see why we were written up by John Dvorak in
Shareware Magazine, Dave Hakala in BoardWatch Magazine, and why we
received countless letters from satisfied users and customers.

For a limited time, Santronics Software is offering the sysop a free
copy of the Xpress door program, not the reader. See the order or
registration form. Or you can order Xpress and get your name on our
mailing list for upgrades and voice support. We offer quality service
and full time support. We also have two FidoNet Xpress support echos:

** Manual Installation (When Qinstall didn't work for you) **

If you have trouble with the QINSTALL.EXE program, do the following:

    mkdir \xpress
    copy 228Q1.EXE \xpress
    cd \xpress
    228Q1

    copy SENDOPX.$$$ SENDOPX.BAT
    copy RECREP.$$$ RECREP.BAT

Edit the SENDOPX.BAT and RECREP.BAT. Search for the word &SUB1& at the DSZ
  commands.

If you use a HST or any 9600 or greater communication modem, substitute
&SUB1& for the words "handshake both". If you are not using an HST, then
  remove the &SUB1&.

Now run XPCFG.EXE, and compile the Xpress control file.

Where are your DSZ, PKZIP and like programs? Are they on the path?
Xpress needs them on the path. Make sure they are on the path. If you
put them in the \XPRESS directory, then \XPRESS must be on the path.

Create a batch file called XPRESS.BAT. It should look something like
  this:

    cd\xpress
    xpmail -p1
    cd\qbbs

If you are using Remote Access (see note below), then it should
  look something like this:

    racvt r2q
    cd \xpress
xpmail -p1 -QOLD (Remote Access must have -QOLD switch)
    cd\ra
    racvt q2r

If you're using ainST, then add the switches:

XPMAIL -F -B38400 -DISF -P1 (-QOLD for RA)
                ^^^^^ ^
                | com port #
locked baud rate (use the rate for your system)

Thats it! Having More problems? Read the docs.

** Notes about Remote Access **

Currently, Silver Xpress is fully QBBS compatible but the install
program will set you up for RA painlessly. (We have already embarked on
directly supporting RA. It will be simple and fast for us to do!)

In the mean time, all you have to do is make sure you have the
following files ready for Xpress to read in your RA directory:

CONFIG.BBS - The QBBS config file. Use RA2QCFG.EXE. Every time you
make a change to you CONFIG.RA, make sure you run RA2QCFG
and then recompile the Xpress control file with XPCFG.
This will make sure that Xpress is upto par with
                  CONFIG.RA.

FLSEARCH.CTL - This is optional if you plan to provide to your users
off-line file download requesting. This is an excellent
feature for users and they will adore your BBS for
                  providing it to them.

ECHOORIG.CTL - This is optional if you want to have flexible origin
                  lines for your echo areas.

EXITINFO.BBS - Required for Xpress when calling from the BBS.
                  Use the RACVT converter.

Other files that Xpress looks for:

   MSG*.BBS files, and USERS.BBS

If you never used QBBS before, then you will probably need the
RA converter files. The following files are available on my
  BBS:

        RA2QCFG.ZIP
        RACVT02.ZIP

  ** HISTORY **

     XPCFG.EXE Version 2.27Q1.01

     - Old item revived in QBBS/RA version - Area Selection Grid.

QBBS has a toggle in QCONFIG.EXE for combined areas,
         RACONFIG.EXE does not.

Xpcfg.exe looked for combined areas when reading config.bbs.
Since there are no combined areas under RA, Xpcfg found no
areas! RA sysops then required QCONFIG.

The area section grid of XPCFG.EXE is a feature in the classic
version of Xpress for the OPUS world.

Use the area selection GRID to select the areas you wish to
make known to Xpress (Xpressable Areas).

     - Bug Fixes in XPMAIL.EXE V2.27

Version 2.27 had a problem trapping with message bases that
were not renumber. This version should take care of that and
get rid of the error message: error 100 0000:12F6

One of the problems I saw and I'm not sure if this is RA
message file maintenance related, was a record in MSGHDR.BBS
pointing to NO text in MSGTEXT.BBS. Xpress did not trap for
this and now it will. It will display a error in the log and
         to the console.

     - Qinstall was changed at the last moment and it caused a problem
when the run directory was not the same as the install directory.
       This QINSTALL is fixed.

     - For large msg numbers, the scan table was off in the display format
of message number - cosmetic fix.

     - Known logic bug, not yet fix.

For interzone mail (Net mail to other zones), the reader
creates the internation line kludge line using the your default
primary address. If you have a AKA address, the door will use
it BUT it didn't update the kludge line with the new AKA
address. I attempted to fix this in this version but I ran
into other repercutions - so I left that out for now.
The result - If you sent NETMAIL to other zones, the receiver
will get your PRIMARY address rather than your AKA address.
If the receiver does not belong to the your primary ZONE, he
won't have a easy or rather automatic method of replying.

     - Multi-line version. In order to utilize the multiline, you must
specify the -ML switch on the XPMAIL.EXE command line.

NOTE: Multiline version of Xpress is for registered version of
             Xpress only.

     - Official maintenance release V2.28
