1. Welcome
PIP is a tool for managing, organizing, and installing programs
and data files on the 3Com PalmPilot series of PDAs. PIP is an
easy-to-use tool that allows you to:

* Track and organize all your PRCs (programs) and PDBs
(databases)

* Create sets of install files, where any item may appear in any
or all sets;

* Install a single item, a complete set, or several complete sets
to your Pilot;

* Remove pending items from the scheduled install group;

* Optimize Pilot memory usage by precisely controlling load
order;

* Manage multiple users;

* Password-protect and lock the PIP database for security;

* Stop worrying about backups.

PIP doesn't actually download files to your Pilot. It configures
them to be installed the next time you perform a HotSync. PIP is
a complete replacement for the Pilot Install Utility
(InstApp.EXE). Think of it as InstApp on steroids. PIP runs on
Windows 95 or later, and Windows NT 4.0 or later.

2. System Requirements
* Windows 95 or greater, or Windows NT 4.0 or greater
* 2.1 MB of RAM
* 600K of disk space
* 3Com PalmPilot with OS rev 1.x or 2.x

3. Quick Start
PIP is built around three central concepts: Items, Sets, and
Members.

An Item corresponds to a PRC or PDB. It's really just an "alias"
for a PRC or PDB. PIP's database stores the alias, not the PRCor
PDB itself. A Set is a group of items. When you drag an Item from
the left pane to the middle pane, you make that Item a Member of
the currently selected Set.

You can store the actual PRC and PDB files on your hard disk
anywhere that is convenient. You could have them all in one
directory. You could have an elaborate subdirectory structure. To
PIP, it's irrelevant.

1. Install PIP. Just copy it and the help file to a convenient
directory. 2. Run PIP. 3. Run Windows Explorer (or other shell).
4. Drag PRC and PDB files from Explorer to PIP's Items list (left
pane). 5. Create one or more Sets. Right click in the Sets list
(right pane). 6. Add Items to Sets. Select the desired Set (right
pane).Drag Items from the left pane to the middle pane. Current
Members appear in the middle pane. 7. To install a single Item,
select it (left pane), right click, select Quick Install. 8. To
install a Set, select it (right pane), right click, select
Install. 9. To review Items currently scheduled to be installed,
choose Delete from the File menu. A dialog appears listing all
Items currently scheduled to be installed for the current user.
To prevent an item from being installed, select it and click
Delete. 10. The next time you perform a HotSync, all Items
scheduled for installation will be downloaded to your Pilot
automatically. 11. You can right-click in any list to display a
pop-up menu that allows you to perform various actions, depending
on the type of list. In the Items list, you can Delete, Edit,
create New, and QuickInstall items. In the Sets list, you can
Delete, Install, create New, and Rename sets. In the Members
list, you can Delete items from the Set selected in the Sets
list.

6. Uninstalling
PIP does nothing to the system registry, nor does it interfere
with or modify in any way the normal HotSync process. PIP does
not add any files to the Windows system directory, or, for that
matter, any directory but the one in which PIP runs. To remove
PIP, simply delete the files listed in Files Included In This
Release. Then, if appropriate, remove the directory in which
those files were stored. Easy!

======================================================
7. Files Included In This Release
pip.exe		The executable program
pip.hlp		The help file
readme.txt	Last-minute news and updates
