PageNOW! for Pilot
Quick Start Guide

For PageNOW! for Pilot Public Beta version 1.0d2, 2 Dec 1997

Follow these instructions to configure PageNOW! for Pilot and send your first text message.

-->Setting Communications Settings
Communications Settings control how PageNOW! interacts with your modem. Select "Communications" from the "Options" menu and set:

1) Init String: Enter a modem initializatoin string that will disable compression and error correction. If you do not, you will likely be unable to send a page. The default string of "ATZ" *DOES NOT* disable compression or correction. You will need to consult your modem manual to decide what string to use. Some common strings are:

Pilot Clip-On Modem: AT&F&Q0%C0\N1
Supra 288: AT+MS64,0,300,300

(NOTE: If you have a working modem init string for a modem not on this list, please send it to feedback@markspace.com so we can include it in the next revision of this document and save other users of the same modem some time. Thanks!)

2) Phone Type: Select tone or pulse dialing.
3) Flow Control: By default, Xon/Xoff flow control is enabled.

-->Setting Dialing Options
Dialing Options control how PageNOW! modifies phone numbers entered in the services database before placing a call. Select "Dialing" from the "Options" menu and set:

1) Local Area Code: Enter your local area code. For example, "408"
2) Toll Free Area Code: Enter the toll-free area code in your country. By default, this is "800"
3) For outside line dial: Turn this option on if you need to dial a special code, such as "9," to reach an outside line
4) Disable call waiting with: Turn this option on if you need to dial a code to disable call waiting or other phone company services that could potentially interrupt a call.
5) Start toll-free with: Enable and configure this option with the number needed to dial a toll-free number. Default is "1-"
6) Start long-distance with: Enable and configure this option with the number needed to dial a long distance number. Default is "1-"
7) End long-distance with: Enable and configure this option with the number needed to dial a long distance number. This is usually used for entering calling card information that may be required after the number to dial is entered.

-->Setting Preferences
1) Greeting: Enable this option to include some text at the beginning of each message sent. Many people set their greeting to be the phone number that they can be reached at.
2) Signature: Enable this option to include some text at the end of each message sent. Many people set their signature to be their name or email address.
3) Clear after sending: Enable this option to clear the message text after a message has been successfully sent. (NOT CURRENTLY IMPLENTED)
4) Remember contents: Enable this option to remember the text and selected user on the main PageNOW! window when you quit PageNOW! or switch to another application. (NOT CURRENTLY IMPLEMENTED)

-->Creating a New Service
1) Name The name of the paging service
2) Number: Enter the modem access phone number to dial. Include the area code (even if local), but not any special numbers needed to reach the service. (That is done via the dialing options dialog).
3) Password (Rare and Optional): Enter any password required by the paging service. This is almost NEVER used, so leave it blank unless you are sure one is required.
4) Baud Rate: The default of 1200 baud should work with most systems. A few require 300 baud access, very few allow connections at more than 2400 baud.
5) Port Settings: In almost all cases, use the default values of 7 Data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit. A few systems (such as some PCS systems in the US) use 8N1 instead of 7E1, but this is rare.

-->Creating a New User
1) Name: Enter last and first name in the fields provided
2) Pageer ID: Enter the pager ID. This is usually a 7 digit number, and is almost always different from the pagers numeric phone number. It can sometimes be found on a hand-written or typed sticker on the pager, as well as on the service contract. If in doubt, ask your paging company.
3) Service: Select the service to be used from the popup menu.

--> Sending a Page
1) Select a user from the popup menu
2) Enter the text to send
3) Click the "Send" button
