User's Guide
Requirements and Installation
Requirements BrainForest is designed to work on all models of the 3Com (USR) PalmPilot connected organizer (Pilot 1000, Pilot 5000, PalmPilot Personal and PalmPilot Professional) and the IBM WorkPad. Before installing BrainForest, you should familiarize yourself with the basic operation of your PalmPilot. This includes concepts and operations such as HotSync, starting applications, using and choosing menus and dialogs, tapping, command strokes, and using Graffiti or the on-screen keyboard. Also, it will be extremely helpful to know how to install and remove applications from your PalmPilot and your desktop computer, and basic use, management and terms of using your desktop computer. If you are not familiar with these concepts and operations, refer to your PalmPilot Handbook and your computer's user manual. System Requirements While BrainForest Trialware will work with any PalmPilot or WorkPad unit, we highly recommend the use of current versions of Palm OS and Windows or Macintosh 3Com software. Our observations in the month of October, 1997 showed that Pilot 1000 and 5000 owners should be using at least Palm OS 1.0.6 Update (PalmPilot-side) and, for Windows owners, at least HotSync 1.1.8 or, for Macintosh users, Conduit Manager 1.01. The same observations showed that PalmPilot Personal and Professional owners should install the latest updates, using at least Palm OS 2.0.4 Update (PalmPilot-side) and, for Windows owners, at least Desktop 2.1 or, for Macintosh users, Conduit Manager 1.01. You will find all current PalmPilot and WorkPad updates at: http://www.3com.com/palm/custsupp/upgrade.html Installation BrainForest can be installed from either a Windows or Macintosh computer. While the contents of the downloaded archive contain a number of files, BrainForest Trialware installation requires three items be installed: - BrainForest.prc - BF Text Plug.prc - QuickStart.pdb These three items are usually supplied in a Zip or StuffIt archive. Regardless of the desktop computer you are using, use your favorite expansion tool and decompress all files to the desktop. If you are unsure how to expand files, refer to your compression software User's Guide or see the Aportis Customer Care FAQ at <http://www.aportis.com>. Known Installation Issues Freeware software like HackMaster, AlarmHack, LaunchPad, and a few others are known to modify the PalmPilot/WorkPad's memory in order to increase the usefulness of your handheld. Unfortunately, these product can often fragment your PalmPilot/WorkPad memory to the point where you cannot install BrainForest even though there is apparently enough free memory on your PalmPilot. BrainForest requires contiguous memory for installation. You will know if this applies to you if the Memory application states you have sufficient space, but BrainForest will still not install. If you are using these software products, you must uninstall their "Hacks" and reset your PalmPilot/WorkPad. With HackMaster, simply tap the "Uninstall All" button and then tap "Reset". With LaunchPad, turn off the "Always use LaunchPad" item then choose "Warm Reset." For other software, consult the documentation for disabling any hacks that are preventing BrainForest from being installed. To Install BrainForest for Windows 95/NT: 1.
