You can use most of the software ready-to-run from the disc and save disk space and compiling time. GNU utilities pride themselves on portability and you'll meet them wherever you go. Once you know these tools, you'll be comfortable in any UNIX environment.

Emacs is the industry standard text editor. You get two versions, 19.30 and 19.34b, both of which will increase your programming speed with its awareness of programming languages. As a C developer, you'll use the GCC C and C++ compiler (2.7.2.2), the C++ library (2.7.2), the debugger gdb (4.15.1), and many other tools. For fun, try GNU chess (4.0.pl77), and GNU go (1.2).

MSDOS users get the DJGPP suite, featuring a great 32-bit C & C++ compiler (v. 2.7.2.1). You also get libraries for GRX 2.0 Graphics Library, SWORD Windowing System, task switching, GDB debugger (v. 4.16), make (v. 3.75), and sed (v. 1.18). Complete sources to libraries and compilers are included.

Everything comes with source and documentation. You get patches for larger packages that you can apply to an existing setup to bring it up to the current release. You won't lose any customizations you have made!
