ENGLISH LANGUAGE BROADCASTS FALL '85 9/7/85 updated 9/16 These stations were logged here in Pgh. and therefore are representative of stations that should be easy to hear. I am excluding marginal signals and stations that broadcast for less than an hour in english. This is not meant to be a complete list, but is a representative sample of some interesting things to hear in the shortwave spectrum... Time period : 0200 - 0400 UTC (10 PM to MIDNIGHT, EDT) FREQUENCY STATION 5.975 BBC , London - can be heard 24 hrs/day on one freq. or another; one of the "big 3" (USA, USSR). ALSO GOOD: 6.120 FAIR: 6.175 , 7.325 , 9.515 6.010 Radio RSA , South Africa ALSO GOOD: 9.615 17.795 Radio Australia , this one is also good any time of day on various frequencies... good music ! 5.985 Voice of Free China , (via WYFR Florida) - this one always booms in; ALSO GOOD: 6.065 7.355 WRNO , New Orleans , for you pop and hard rock fans... 6.100 Radio Havana Cuba , ALSO GOOD: 6.140 , 9.740 6.165 Radio Nederland , good DX programs 9.475 Radio Cairo , Egypt , sometimes difficult to pull in 9.745 HCJB , Quito, Ecuador , religious programs but sometimes some good DX shows --------------------------------------------------------------------- Time Period : 1700 - 1900 UTC (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT) 15.070 BBC - booms in, of course... 15.110 Radio Prague, Czechoslovakia. ALSO GOOD: 17.705 15.260 Radio Canada. ALSO GOOD: 17.820 15.345 Argentina. This is a pretty good catch... 11.675 Kuwait. Playing rock music yet! A very good catch... 15.420 WRNO , New Orleans 11.645 Voice of Greece. This one is pretty consistent. ALSO GOOD: 15.630 We can expect the frequencies in the 15 and 17 MHz bands to get weaker as winter approaches; but then we can also look forward to some much more noise free reception... I'm not attempting to document the Voice of America (VOA) or Radio Moscow; these can practically be pulled in on a refrigerator (!) and are easily heard 24 hrs/day. (I once DID pull in Radio Nederland on a phono cartridge; you should have seen the letter I got back from the reception report !). This list will be updated periodically... have fun ! ||sysop||
