[----------------------------- From: DECWRL::"lopez!flash@sharkey.cc.umich.edu" "Flash Hoser" 23-OCT-1990 To: anarky::pirate Subj: report A Boring Saturday: The GWN pirate crew found the Saturday Night Pirate Watch to be a total bust this weekend. At 01:45, a CW station we heard before, sending about 8wpm, bleeted out: HELLO PIRATE RADIO LISTENERS THIS IS THE FREE RADIO PROJECT The station sent in its slow morse drone information about its transmitter and its double zep antenna at 50 feet, but no modulation. Dave (tomato@lopez) thought that a morse code pirate was silly, since many if not most pirate radio fans do not copy morse code. At around 02:10, someone came on with a weak AM signal and said: "We Want Pirates!" Nothing but silence punctuated by static bursts, until a couple of the regular SSB guys commented on how boring it was. We gave up around 05:00 without a single logging here in the Great White North.... WHAT A LETDOWN after last weeks amazing night of Pirate Radio. ----------- RNI Playing Both Sides An Editorial by Gary Bourgois, WB8EOH System Administrator, Great White North UPLink RNI still wants to give the illusion that they are a "free" radio station. YET the entire broadcast is laden with DISCLAIMERS and it is obvious that the staff has been told to "distance" themselves from the Pirate Scene. Whenever a pirate calls their on air number (1-800-73-69-RNI) they always make sure that they mention how it is ILLEGAL to broadcast without a license, and they are forever correcting people who still think the WWCR air time is actually a pirate broadcast. There are other subtle changes since their original first night show. THE ad copy in the spot for the RNI VIDEOTAPE has changed the wording of "The FCC's illegal raid on RNI" to "The FCC's raid", which is an obvious capitulation. It seems that Al and Randi are now trying to make themselves seem "legit" in the eyes of the FCC. They hope to get a REAL LICENSE and broadcast their programming to the world. Well, I for one do not see much chance of this. Weiner especially is a highly controvercial character. His "FALLING STAR" network, the Yonkers station, RNI itself, and I am sure countless other pirate operations are all in the FCC files. Let's face it. He is under a "character" investigation now. Even though the current operation is LEGAL, and even though they are all acting like reformed pirates, they still program "controvercial" material, and the FCC does not like that stuff. Disclaimers or no disclaimers, what do you think RNI would program on the air if it was given a REAL license? More of the same, and probably once they had the FCC license nailed to the wall, they would change their tune (maybe to Country Joe and the Fish?) and not having to worry about WWCR (which is a RELIGIOUS STATION, let's not forget) they would definately become more controvercial. Whether it is Pirate Joe, and his 1960's hippie stuff, or the more entertaining Johnny Lightning's irreverence, RNI would quickly become something that the FCC, and the ESTABLISHMENT could not tolerate. It would be ENTERTAINING. It would be THOUGHT PROVOKING. In short, it would be totally in opposition to EVERYTHING that the present state of FCC approved broadcasting stands for. In this world of bland satellite fed sanitized mind numbing gerberadio, A station where the announcers have freedom to speak their mind, and also offer that same freedom to the listeners, as well as playing music that is not on the "hot clock", RNI is a breath of fresh salty air. Sunday nights are FUN since they hit the air waves. Could this energy continue if they were a 7 day a week full power legal broadcaster with their OWN callsign on the wall? Sadly, I don't think the FCC will ever let us find out. Shame too. -- =Marquette MI: It's Not the END of the world, but you can see it from here= == Gary Bourgois flash@lopez (rutgers!sharkey!lopez!flash) GWN UPLink == == 3.950 Nationwide Amateur Radio Nightly after 0200z=Learning Channel == =============== WB8EOH = The Eccentric Old Hippie = WB8EOH ================ [ I agree Gary, and I have noticed the subtle changes in the programming [ on RNI... I was expecting to find more stations on 19 meters, but constant scanning brought only one pirate signal in this band. I had heard that other stations would be in that frequency area, particularly Samurai was to try 15053 khz, but I only got a weak het on that frequency. Also, where was the famous Voice of the Purple Pumpkin that had a pretty good signal on 19 m into St. John's last year? The 41 meter-band was noisy, here, and reception was hampered by CW stations and maritime traffic. Here is what I heard: 15011.0 (USB) CFBN 2114-2130* UTC, 31 Oct, SINPO 24433. Special pgm with usual Hallowe'en mx: "Monster Mash" & "Purple People Eater". Asked for rpts to Wellsville address. 7414.8 UNID 0059-0121 UTC (fade out or off), 1 Nov, SINPO 23432-1. Rock mx then heard Frank QSOing with other stns: wished someone a "Happy Christmas" at 0156! Heard Samurai (SINPO 22432) ask Frank the name of his stn, Frank said he did not run a stn, then coined name "Radio Free Frank" which he then used all evening. At 0200 UTC heard Howard E. Lyon of Voice of Oz QSOing w/Frank -- seemed to have hearing Samurai...Lyon said bye at 0203:30 UTC and I could hear very weak stations calling but I lost them in the crud. 7410.0 kHz (USB) Voice of Oz 0254-0321* UTC, 1 Nov, SINPO 33433. Howard E. Lyon w/older pops, clip from "Wizard of Oz" at 0305 UTC. At end of pgm had very brief exchange of comments with "Radio Free Frank". And I also took notice that 41 meters has changed somewhat, 7395,7400, and 7420 now contain international bdcst's (and coming in good too), this off course isnt leaving much room for our pirate friends to squeeze in. But after about 2 1/2 weeks, I finally copied one of our veteran pirates. "One Voice Radio" 7380.1 (am) 1:10 UTC 11/4 QTH: East Pa. Signal ranged from 5-10 (!) with moderate fade Joe's program consisted of the usual mix of health news, stats. other reports. Mentioned that they were in the [...south /john].. area and that they received about 100 letters so far commending his programs. I am not sure of this (audio level at the point between threshold and imagination!) but might have had ID at 0509:30 UTC. Carrier off at 0515:30 UTC & new carrier noted on 6226.0 kHz a few moments later. This went off at 0530:30 UTC and new came on on 6320.4 kHz at 0530:50. This went off at 0545:30 UTC, new carrier 0545:50 - 0602 UTC. (4 Nov). Just noticed error in above and I can't backspace in this mode!! I guess when they shut down a pirate they take all the letters that had been sent to him and hassle the writers! Anyway, here is a portion of the letter: " October 30, 1990 PIRATE RADIO STATION SHUT DOWN IN SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA The FCC's San Francisco office shut down an unlicensed pirate broadcast station operating on 7435 KHz on the International Fixed Public Radio Service band. The unlicensed station was operated by amateur operator Stephen P. McGreely (N6NKS), who was fined $1,000 for unlicensed operations. The pirate station was identified as "The Muddy Sound of KMUD." An FCC engineer from the San Francisco Office using mobile radio detection-finding equipment located the station at Elda Drive, San Rafael, California, the home of Stephen P. McGreevy. Unlicensed radio operation is a violation of Section 301 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended. Sanctions may include administrative fines of up to $10,000 and/or criminal penalties of up to $100,000 and/or imprisonment for up to one year. Misuse of radio frequencies is a serious offense because of its potential for interfering with safety-of-life services such as aviation, law enforcement and marine.
