Winter Island Park - June 27 & 28, 1992 Well it is spring 1992. Field Day is just around the corner and will be upon us quickly. Last year Field Day was fun and a lot of hard work for all of us. For some it was our first and for others it was just one of many. A lot of Ham experience was there and will always be there for new and old Hams alike to share stories, problems, and solutions with each other. That will never change. That's what makes the Ham Radio community so special and unlike any other around. The friendship, the help, and the knowledge in every single Ham is why we are so special to all around us. It's this time of the year, every year, we get our chance to show the people, real people, why we are so special and valuable to our community. We get the chance to show them how the Ham Radio community would step in and be able to carry out communication in the time of emergency or disaster when other means of communications are lost. That's why we are special, every one of us. We have something to contribute. So let's show the public and each other how we can pull all of our resources together and make this the BEST FIELD DAY this club and community have ever had the chance to see. We are planning to make this a family weekend loaded with fun, adventure, and most of all a learning experience for kids ages 1-92. We have games planned, face painting, and even a clown for all to enjoy. Also a karate demonstration put on for us by The Karate Workshop in Salem, so come up and see what is going on. Games for the kids. Horseshoe tournaments for the older kids (14-92)..just kidding. Anybody can participate in anything or come just for moral support. We will even try to fit in some operating from time to time. Speaking of operating. We are going to run 3A this year all modes, all bands. If you want to try some things different ask us, we are probably going to try to run almost everything. We are even going to have a NSRA Field Day contest for all operators, details will be available later. So I hope this sounds like fun for everyone. Bring your kids, your kid's kids, and even your kid's kid's kids. Camping is available, just bring your tent and sleeping bags. Anybody that wants to join in on Field Day is welcome. Hope to see all of you there. Let me know if there is anything the club can borrow for field day or any thing we failed to address. Also, for the more adventurous Ham. There is a Field Day NET on Thursdays at 8pm on the 145.470 machine. My home phone number for any suggestions or comments is 744-7348. Talk to you Soon. 73's. It will be my intention to get many new members to join our ranks during the 1993 year. To get more activity on 2 meters, 220 and 440 frequencies, by adopting incentive programs to encourage this activity. Our frequencies have been for the most part too inactive for over a year. Lets us all look forward to a new year that will see good health to all, a return to a "better" economy and brotherhood and sisterhood among all. It is very simple to use. You are encouraged to use it to send greetings to friends, relatives, and neighbors for holiday greetings, birthday & anniversary wishes, or just to say hello. Third party traffic (messages from non hams, or to non hams) within the United States and elsewhere where 3rd party traffic is accepted by law is greatly encouraged. Most large pbbs's (packet bulletin board systems) have a help file which will tell you all the steps to follow to send traffic via the National Traffic System. To send a message (radiogram), use plain simple english. An X stands for a period. Your message should be no more than 25 words, including X. ARL number codes are used to abbreviate often used sentences. A list of these codes can be obtained from the ARRL or by contacting myself or anyone who regularly uses the NTS system. Once this is done, the heading (preamble) can now be completed as follows: (all on the same line) a. number NR___(message number you are up to) b. precedence E (emergency) P (priority) W (welfare) R (routine) used the most often c. handling instructions (optional) hx code d. station of origin first amateur handler e. check number of words including x in text only f. place of origin not necessarily location of station of origin g. time filed (optional) h. date must agree with date of time files The heading is followed by the letters BT (break text) Next comes the address followed by BT. Be as complete as possible (zipcode, and phone #) The text of 25 words or less (if possible) follows ending with BT Ending with the Signature (name of person giving radiogram (not necessarily the ham operator) The following is an example of a complete formal nts message: NR1 R (HX) N1FWV 22 REVERE MA MAY2 BT (note no punctuation) NORTH SHORE REPEATER ASSOC PO BOX 3724 PEABODY MA 01961 (area code & phone #) X HOPE TO HEAR YOU ALL ON THE TRAFFIC NETS X 8PM DAILY ON 145.23 BOSTON AND 10:30PM ON 146.64 WALTHAM X 73 BT JEFF N1FWV When you are connected to a bulletin board to send your traffic, you should start as follows: ST ZIPCODE (if out of state) ST ZIPCODE @ __ (the 2 letters for the state) (note the spacing before & after the @) (at title prompt) CITY STATE ZIPCODE The above formal message should then be put in at the message prompt followed by a CTRL-Z. Next months nts column will go into the precedence and handling instructions. 73 until next month. Several hundred cases are reported to have been on hold awaiting the granting of authority to the Commission's various bureaus to levy higher monetary fines. That authority, granted April 15, raised the maximum fine that can be levied without approval by the commissioners themselves to 20,000 dollars. Thus far only a handful of actions have involved amateurs. On April 24, 1992, the FCC issued three Notices of Apparent Liability affecting Amateur Radio. David Plourde, N1IZR, a Technician class licensee in Lewiston, Maine, was issued an NAL for 10,000 dollars, for using non-type accepted equipment to transmit in the Citizen's Band. Also on April 24, a non-amateur in Tampa, Florida, was issued an 8,000 dollar NAL for transmitting on the Amateur 40-meter band. On the same day Donald Bishop, N0EA, an Amateur Extra Class licensee, was issued an NAL for 10,000 dollars for transmitting from a mobile installation on frequencies near 7420 and 15050 kHz. Finally, also on April 24, the Private Radio Bureau's Special Services Division issued the first Order to Show Cause and Suspension Order to amateurs in several years as the result of an investigation into volunteer examiner practices. Charles P. Pascal, WB6CIY, and Sandra V. Crane, N6TFO, both Amateur Extra Class licensees, have been ordered to show cause why their Amateur operator licenses should not be suspended and their station licenses revoked. These orders are the result of an FCC probe into volunteer examinations given in August and September, 1991 by Pascal and Crane. ARRL Bulletin 37 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Farewell Father Moran Delhi, India - Rev. Marshall Moran (9N1MM) became a silent key on April 13, 1992 at the age of 85. Father moran, a jesuit who spent more than 40 years in the Himalayan Hindu Kingdom, died in a New Delhi hospital on April 13, several weeks after learning he had cancer. In 1951 he became one of the first foreigners to move to Nepal, then a remote and little-known land that let in very few foreigners. He became a Nepali citizen in 1956. Father Moran set up a boys school at Godavari, just outside of Katmandu. It was the first modern educational institution in the country. Some of you might remember Father Moran from our ????? meeting where he was our guest speaker. He was a very entertaining person and displayed many beautiful slides along with a great sense of humor. He will be dearly missed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ATV ON THE NORTH SHORE Over the last few months amateur TV has picked up two new stations. Ken (KA1TKZ) is a newcomer to ATV and has done a great job with videos of the space shuttle Atlantis. Ken was on the air at least three hours a day transmitting live footage of the flight of the shuttle. (thanks Ken) The other new station is Ron (WA1QZK) who had a few antenna problems at first, but after cleaning up his 440 beam and installing some new coax, was able to receive video pictures from the Boston hill repeater. How can I watch? To receive ATV you will need a 440 antenna. The next step is a converter. If you do not have an ATV oonverter then you can tune in using your cable ready TV. Unhook your cable from the set and hook up the 440 antenna to the TV. To monitor the Boston Hill ATV repeater (421.250) you need to tune in to channel 57. K1DFD, KA1TKZ and myself also use 426.250 to send video movies back and forth to each other and anyone else who would like to 'watch'. To eavesdrop on us tune your TV to channel 58. You may see many things from past field day videos and amateur events to space shuttle footage. If you wish to join in on the fun, please give me a call. See you on ATV! Recently the band plan for the 440 band has changed. Any repeater ending in a ? must have the input -5mhz and repeaters ending in a ? would have an input +5mhz. We have been asked by W1OJ if we are planning on switching our repeaters input and output and therefore eliminating any chance of having our frequency re-assigned to someone else. Two other repeaters in the New England area have already had their frequency pair re-assigned because they would not change frequencies to follow the new bandplan. Also, there has been talk of putting an ATV repeater on the north shore. At this time this is not possible because the current output of the Danvers 440 repeater is in the middle of the ???? band for ATV. Switching the frequencies would eliminate both of the problems above. The only problem would be an inconvenience for those with crystal radios who would have to order a new set. I have been asked to include the questionaire below regarding this matter. Would switching the 447.800 (-5) repeater to 442.800 (+5) create a hardship for you? It's 7:50 AM on April 1, 1992. The tension was rising. The room was silent. The video camera was rolling. Computer screens were lit up with the latest satellite tracking software, the blinking dot on the screen was now over New York. With the microphone in hand, all ears were listening to 145.55. Then they heard it.... the Space Shuttle Atlantis calling CQ. He went for it by giving the club callsign "WA2SDY". Nothing. He again repeated the call "WA2SDY Syracuse University". Then they heard it. What they had worked for over the last couple of weeks was now taking place. "WA2SDY this is the Atlantis" echoed around the club station as all eyes lit up in excitement. They did it...... they talked with the Space Shuttle. The person holding the microphone was Pete Vasiliou (N1HGD) of Swampscott. Pete is a student at Syracuse University in Syracuse New York studying civil engineering. Pete was thrilled to work the shuttle and his school club got lots of publicity from this accomplishment. I know the new officers will all work together with the membership to make this a year to remember for the NSRA. Congradulations to all of you. You may have noticed that Field Day is mentioned alot in this issue. You could call it the Pre-Field Day issue. Field Day this year will be different than years past. We are really pushing the public awareness aspect of the event. We are hoping to get all of you to come down and join in on the fun. Bring the entire family. If you know someone who might be interested in our great hobby, please tell them about Field Day. I have made up flyers and there are plenty to pass around. Please give Mark or myself a call if you can help out in any way at all. I know we can all make Field Day 92 a great success. Send us your news articles...
