Sorry, the boundary between near and far field is a function of
effective aperture diameter in addition to wavelength. "Reference
Data for Engineers" gives the boundary as D squared over lambda,
where D is the diameter of the equivalent aperture and lambda is
wavelength. For a half-wave dipole, D= .41 wavelengths.
For a quarter-wave vertical (over a ground plane) D=.82 and N8DGN's
definition is almost right. For a 6 foot C-band TVRO dish,
D is about 24 wavelengths. For the 230 foot dish at Goldstone that
tracks interplanetary spacecraft at 8.2 GHz., D is 1916 wavelengths,
so the far field starts at 4 million wavelengths or 83 miles.

I don't really think First Amendment rights enter into it. If it was only one
ham talking directly to another, that would probably be a factor. But when they
start acting as agents or "volunteer carriers" (as opposed to "common
carriers") for third parties, it becomes a different ballgame. In that case, we
aren't talking about message content; we're talking about whether or not we are
allowed to act as agents for third parties REGARDLESS of message content. In
that context, the FCC is undoubtedly fully within its mandate from Congress
(and the ITU).

The bottom line is that we, or rather the bad apples among us, brought this on
ourselves. I've been criticized in this newsgroup for being a legalistic
vigilante, and yet the so-called "20 meter letter" issue came about because we
hams, both severally and individually, have become lax over the last few years
in policing ourselves strictly "by the book". It is becoming increasingly
obvious with every passing day that the anarchism masquerading as liberal
constructionism is damaging our cause.

If we don't march in step, it isn't a parade - it's just a bunch of jaywalkers.

DAYTON is comming up soon and will be here faster than you think
(APRIL 27, 28, and 29). There was some talk about a USE-NET meeting as
well as a calling frequency. This year we should try the same. I would
like to nominate 223.60 (dir) as the calling channel as 2 meters is
useless.

Also, There was some question as to whether a new hotel was going to be
constructed on the fleamarket site. Does anyone know if this has happened ?

Here we go again - committing hari kiri! This is broadcasting, not an
informational bulletin pertaining to amateur radio. No wonder the FCC gets so
disgusted with our lack of judgment and self-discipline.

I saw a base note on mods to the SONY 2010. Are there mods I can
make to the original SONY 2001 ?

Hi,

I became a Ham in April of 88, and jumping into this with both feet
(VHF, UHF, HF, packet, etc...) was putting quite a dent in my
checkbook. This is one of the reasons I settled on the 140. Out of all
the purchases during that time, the 140 was by far the best. It's
really nice when you buy a product and you wind up with more features
than you expected.

One of the nicest features that I leveraged off of (while getting over
"mic-fright") was the 10 memories reserved for "band-spreads". In
these memories you program in two frequencies: a low end and a high
end. While operating in these tunable memories, if you "roll off" the
top end, it loops you back to the low end. As long as you're in this
memory, your legal. So far, I haven't found this feature on any
other rig (though it is not something I've researched).

I work mostly CW and have no problem getting out a good 100 watts. I have
worked several other 140 owners and have not heard any bad comments
about the rig. In addition to CW, I also have it connected to a PK-232
and do RTTY and PACKET. I'm having a little RF feedback causing me some
PACKET problems, but I have to do a lot of work on the wiring and 232
before I can blame the 140.

The only changes that would be appreciated would be if the squelch and
power controls were reversed (the power is a very sensitive slide
switch and would be better as the rotary POT) and if an SWR meter was
included. But, in that price range you can't expect everything.

Good luck with your decision es 73

Last night I heard ZK1DD on 20 SSB around 0410Z, and worked KN0E/KH3 on 20
CW about 0450Z. There was almost no propagation northeast (into Europe,
Asiatic Russia), a little East (ZS1VP, FH8CB and FR5ZD) and south
(HC8/HC1LT, CE0OGZ, OH6NTO/CE3 and ZP6XDW). This was all between 0400 and
0500Z. The signals were not great, but perfectly readable nonetheless.

Although there is a place on the DXCC form for RST, it not required by
the rules. I have had no problem entering NONE for RST on the DXCC form
when there is none on the card. I have heard one particular DX station
having fun with USA operators by not giving a report. When the stateside
station asks for a report "for the log", the DX stations says,
  "Your're loud . . ., QRZ"
